I think it's important that you understand our vacation details before I write this review. My partner and I had a goal of becoming fluent in the Spanish language so that we could be completely bilingual. Our plan for this vacation was to find a remote location in Costa Rica, where the local residents would not be likely to speak English, and we would be forced to speak Spanish. We found the perfect place in Marbella, CR! The house, landscaping, infinity pool, and of course magnificent view are BETTER than expected. Howler monkeys fed on fruit trees every morning, and the view of the Pacific Ocean behind the jungle we always breathtaking and accompanied by the sound of ocean waves crashing on the shore. Unfortunately, there were problems: * At the time I booked The Rancho, the listing included a hot tub. (I believe now it says jacuzzi). There was no hot tub. There was a lovely jacuzzi which cascaded into the infinity pool, but they were both the same temperature - about 75-80F. This was a huge disappointment to us. * When it rained (it rains a lot in Costa Rica) the roof leaks. As of June 30, 2017, the roof leaked badly over the kitchen and bathroom areas. I recommend that you confirm that the roof has been fixed before you book this home. * There is a television, but when we arrived there was no reception. No cable, no local channels, nothing. After two weeks, Jeffrey had an antenna installed and we were able to get one local channel, although it was not great reception. * The picture in the listing shows a 2 person shower in the bathroom, but only 1 shower head works. * You will need a 4-wheel drive to arrive at this beautiful home. The last 12 miles leading into Marbella are unpaved, pitted, and can only be described as treacherous. We were never able to complete the 12 miles in less than 35 minutes. I was told that the locals were able to do it in 25 so maybe you'll have better luck than me. * Marbella and the beaches in this are GREAT if you're a surfer! If you're not a surfer, be prepared for peace and quite and not much else. The sand in Marbella is black, but some of the other beaches have different types of sand. * This was not a problem for us, but the listing says that the house sleeps 10. Actually, it will sleep 12, however there will be no privacy for anyone. There is one bedroom (the only one with air conditioning) which has 2 queen size beds, so 2 couples would have to share a room. The other 4 queen size beds are in a loft. These 4 couples would be in a dormitory situation with no air-conditioning or privacy. Also, there are no closets or drawers up there. Once we accepted the lack of a hot tub and leaks in the roof,...

The site was absolutely spectacular, high on a hill with a view of the ocean, a jacuzzi with water at ambient temperature, spilling over into an infinity pool. Almost 360 degrees of all-glass sliding doors, looking out at the view. A huge open interior, giving a feeling of spaciousness. There was one bedroom with two double beds, and the only available AC in the house. We left all the doors and windows open in the rest of the house to catch the breeze, which made it quite comfortable. The breeze was constant and sometimes very strong. Several howler monkeys came nearly every day to a nearby tree. Other wildlife included many colorful birds typical of the tropical dry forest, and assorted vertebrates and invertebrates. The location was quite remote, 17 km from the nearest paved road. We recommend getting groceries and gas in Santa Cruz on your way in, and we found having a 4-wheel drive vehicle helpful. Also recommended: headlamps, as interior lighting is very poor for cooking or reading after dark. There were a minimum number of dishes and chairs, about enough for 6 or 7 people. The brand new washer and dryer worked fine, but we found that the oven did not get hot enough to cook anything in it. The upstairs bedroom has no windows and minimal furniture; there are three beds lined up next to each other, and a wardrobe. Overall, the view, the pool, and the wildlife were what we enjoyed the most, and made for a wonderful vacation.

Thank you Karen for your feed back as it will help me make my home better than ever. We have added a few chairs since 6 were not enough. The Rancho was very clean at check in and yes it is a thatched rancho style roof, so since the winds were blowing extremely hard those days there is a some flakes of palm on the ground. Check in is at 2 pm and i was at a family easter outing that is why i had my Spanish speaking administrator check you in and it was very prompt. I am not sure why this bothered you, but when i can do it myself. Sorry it was not me personally, but i did have someone there at 2 pm to bring you to the home. It is very remote and if i give directions people always get lost. This is the reason i have you go to the Tiki Hut Restaurant to avoid you getting lost. When you texted me at 5 am in the morning i was a sleep. The minute i was awake at 6 am the water issue was resolved immediately. Like i said before it was a water leak main in town and not my fault..... But immediately it was resolved and you had water by 6:30 am. We do our best here in Costa Rica to please our guests and make the experience very good. All my other reviews are excellent and i am a super host, so that being said some people are not easily pleased. Sorry you had some minor difficulties and i was there for you 24/7 and told you to call me anytime. PS if you needed anything from me a simple call or just walking next door and asking me was welcomed. Sincerely Jeffrey Allen (owner) PURA VIDA

Jeff is an amazing host. The level of communication and helpfulness was beyond any airbnb experience we've ever had. The pictures are beautiful, but they still don't compare to how incredible the house and view are in person. The house is in a small tight-knit beach town community that has been relatively untouched by tourism and over-development. Not to mention that the uncrowded beaches are full of spectacularly clear water and fluffy soft sand. We'll definitely be returning and we can't recommend staying at this house enough. Do yourself a favor and check out this house and the Marbella community.

Jeff was awesome! He was prompt with his responses & fair on negotiations. The Rancho has a beautiful view atop the tallest hill in Marbella. The tiki hut restaurant, which Jeff owns, was the go to spot for breakfast lunch & dinner in the area. Our stay at the Rancho was very smooth with little to no problems. He even let us rent his personal boards!! The town of Marbella is full of genuine & sincere folk. They are humble, kind, and happy. I would definately recommend diving into the local culture, you'd find they are a good people who have a good time. Pura Vida !
