"LIVING IN MILAN AS AT HOME
Milan is an international, modern and, at the same time, classic city.
Travelers arriving there for tourism, for business or to visit the various fairs and exhibitions may of course book a hotel of any category; but we advise you to have a more charming and personal experience by rentinfor few days.
Each year, at the time of the Salone del Mobile (Furniture Fair) and Design Week, every April, the journalists stay there for more than a week. This time we decided to stay in a B & B.
We were in the Milanese House you see in the photos in this article. It is located very close to a Metro entrance, and it is really comfortable. A beautiful surprise.
BEING MILANESE FOR A WEEK
After crossing the internal courtyard, we arrived at the entrance of a building owned by a family and we went up to the first floor. We opened the door and we found ourselves in this B & B: we tell you our experience of being "Milanese" for a week
It is a 200 square meter apartment, with a living room, dining room (almost 80 square meters), 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, laundry and a big kitchen .
The upper floor is inhabited by other family members. The owner's name is Olga, she is very friendly and charming; she lives in Rome for work reasons, so she has decided to turn his house intleaving the management to her niece Roberta, who hosts everybody with care and attention (...)
THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING
The building was built by Olga’s great-grandfather in the early 20th century in an Art Nouveau style, during the Liberty period , and it has 3 floors.
The apartment is very large and with high ceilings; It is very charming; in April it is neither hot nor cold, but in every season heating or air conditioning are available
The house was designed to meet the needs of each member of her family in that period, which included a painter, Olga's grandmother's uncle. A window in the living room remind us this and keeps its original appearance, with flowers and fruits in Art Nouveau style.
At its origin, the building had 2 floors only: the ground floor was used for business by the family, the first floor was used by the family.
Olga’s memories are strongly linked to her house: her great-grandfather was a grocer, he lived selling spices imported from the Far East, like pepper and cinnamon. When we went through the ground floor and went up the stairs, we could still smell these spices perfumes. Olga said it makes her the effect of Marcel Proust's madeleine: unforgettable! This old company still exists today, it is run by her brothers, it grew a lot and it is one of the most important in Italy in the spices market. (...)
From the entry door, on the right there are the bedrooms, on the left the living room and the kitchen; everything is connected by a long corridor, on which are many glass doors.
All the walls are beige, doors and windows are white, to give more light to the inner space. The interiors of the apartment were designed by Roberta, who is attending the school of Architecture at Politecnico (University in Milan). Olga admits: "I like a lot her choices: she has given new life to antiques, as for example the great old bed, the wardrobe and two chairs with marquetry in Liberty style. Most of the furniture materials, is only of high-quality Italian wood. Chairs and modern decoration, on the other hand, were purchased from Ikea. It's my mother who takes care of the plants on the terraces, she loves flowers of all kinds".
A FRIENDLY AND INTIMATE HOUSE
This apartment is full of memories, and those who stay there can feel the joy of this family. Olga likes to share her feelings with the hosts she has the pleasure of welcoming. In this house, we had the feeling of being really at home.
This B & B has all what you need and it is located in a very lively area, full of supermarkets and restaurants.
The mix of people born in Milan and of foreigners, culturally as well as culinary, makes this city a really charming destination for tourists
