À propos de ce logement

Providence Cottage is a cosy, 16th Century woodsman's cottage. Full of beams, uneven floorboards, steep stairs and an inglenook fireplace (with woodburner) large enough to stand in, it is a story-book country retreat!

Le logement

Built in 1506, Providence Cottage is a retreat from the modern world, in every sense. With a huge log burning stove, it is the perfect place for two people to unplug, unwind and relax.

Ideal for two, the cottage comprises a large living and dining room with a huge inglenook fireplace (complete with woodburner), kitchen, double bedroom, bathroom and powder room. Dinner in the snug with the fire roaring is what the cottage was made for, but there is also a garden for warmer days.

If you you do choose to venture out, The George in Cranbrook provides excellent food, and is less than a 15 minute walk away (don’t forget a torch!) and there are some excellent walks in the woods across the road. By car, the renowned Sissinghurst Gardens are just five minutes away.

Once owned by John Calcott Horsley, who designed the first ever Christmas card (look up the Cranbrook Colony for more information) it is the story book country retreat!

Accès des voyageurs

We will always endeavour to greet you when you arrive (and light the woodburner, if it's chilly!).

Échanges avec les voyageurs

We are happy to interact with guests if required, and can be contacted in an emergency.

Autres remarques

There is a stunning bath, but no shower. There is a woodburner in the living room, plenty of blankets and hot water bottles, but no central heating. There is no television or stereo (although there is a record player and wifi). This is a 16th Century Tudor, Grade II listed building and we have deliberately endeavoured to respect this, with simple furnishings. The kitchen is equipped with the basics, an electric oven and fridge, a kettle and a toaster but there is no dishwasher or microwave.
The house will come supplied with a basket full of logs. If you require more than this during your stay, there is a petrol station less than a mile away that sells them.
Cranbrook is only a 15 minute walk or a two minute drive away, where there is a well stocked Co-op. For a more local experience, the Farm Shop at Hartley (a five minute drive) is well recommended.
Because the house is 500 years old, there is no disabled access; the stairs are fairly steep and doors to both the bedroom and bathroom are low. The house is timber-framed and this means that floors slope, and some eaves are low (although not downstairs). Please do ask if you require further clarification.

Dear Ellen, What did we love your cosy, lovely house so beautiful furnished! We felt immediately at home, in the evening we played Scrabble in front of the fire while the record-player played some jazzy music, meanwhile we enjoyed the local drinks you gave us. We made long walks in this beautiful part of Kent, the nearby footpaths lead us through meadows with sheep surrounded by may-trees, through forests with carpets of bluebells. Thank you to be such a nice host, you made us feel very welcome!

A lovely little cottage with great style to allow you to enjoy a tranquil retreat in the countryside or a short hop to the coast. Great hosts.

Utterly fantastic stay in just the most perfect cottage. Ellen is a wonderful, helpful and friendly host and has made Providence cottage a magical glimpse into the past. Wonderful attention to detail and charming touches, such as freshly picked bluebells on the table and mint in the bathroom, all make the cottage feel homely and very much loved. Step back in time with dominos or scrabble in front of the roaring fire listening to classic old records on the record player, a nook for cosy meals and a super comfy bed. Wonderfully quirky, wonky beams and sloping floors and ceilings make this an enchanting and magical place. Plus fresh coffee, lots of goodies and marvellous local walks made this a perfect long weekend away. Thank you so much!

What a wonderful and unique place to stay... Steeped in so much history and the perfect hideaway if you're keen to get away from it all... So much character and charm. And it even snowed whilst we were there which made it even more special... Don't be put off by the lack of central heating, the log burner made so much heat and there are electric heaters throughout too. The wonky floors made it all the more interesting, as did the small door way into the bedroom and other secret little nooks and crannies : ) An absolute delight and we would definitely go back...

Ellen's cottage was the perfect escape from London. Just chilling out in front of the Roaring fire with some good wine and music in the background. Ellen was always very prompt with help and advice. Highly recommend this place for winding down.

We had a wonderful stay at Ellen's magical cottage, which is beautifully appointed and full of character and charm. Though sadly because of our timings we didn't get to meet Ellen personally, she was brilliant and clear on communications and provided all the help and advice we needed for our trip. We especially loved drinking by the cosy fire, and walking to nearby Sissinghurst Castle. Thanks so much for having us!

Married and with three small children, I live in Kent (but commute to London for work- I'm an Archivist). We fell in love with Austin, Texas during a holiday earlier this year- craft beer, coffee, BBQ and cowboy boots!- but Kent is our home.
