$48/night for two, $10 more per extra person, 2 night minimum. Cabin house in scenic Western Maryland mountains, 20 mi east of Cumberland, at the top of lovely Green Ridge Mountain. Surrounding land is owned by Maryland State Parks, for a lovely, peaceful stay and views.

Le logement

2 BR 1 BA fully furnished cabin built in the 1920's, in Green Ridge State Forest, Oldtown, MD, on 40 private acres backing up to a mountain, located between Hagerstown and Cumberland., off Route 68, Surrounded by trees and beautiful views. Pastoral setting with cows grazing in nearby meadows, restaurant and golf at Rocky Gap State Park, 20 miles away. 25 miles from historic Cumberland, Maryland. Camping, fishing and hiking trails all close by. Kitchen has utensils, dishes, pots and pans. Linens and towels provided. Lots of blankets and pillows and throws for cozy reading or snuggling up to watch old movies. There is also an oil furnace that keeps the house toasty. LR has two couches, a rocker and a day bed to accomodate extra guests if desied.

NOTE: This is our family's mountain get-away, which we use often, so it's tidy, but not immaculate like a hotel. Our belongings are on shelves and in boxes throughout as you can see from the photos. Expect occasional stubborn rust-colored stains on the shower walls sometimes from the high mineral content in the water. For drinking and cooking we have filters for taste and I always leave a gallon of filtered spring water on the kitchen counter to start your stay. We have personal belongings on shelves and in dressers, condiments in refrigerator, and food in cabinets which we prefer to be left untouched by guests. There is empty dresser and closet space for guests and some empty cabinet space for guest's food. The cabin is dusted and vaccuumed, bathroom and kitchen wiped down between guests, fresh linens and towels provided. Cabins tend toward musty smells when they sit closed for a few week, so it may take a few hours to air it out with the fresh mountain air. The furniture is lovingly worn, not sparkly new. We steam upholstery and rugs every few months, so it is clean though not spot free - it saves $ and keeps the price low not to replace every item that gets minor spots from regular use - which is why the price is lower than some and it is fine to bring children and a dog if desired. Cleaning supplies are included if guests have a higher standard than the level of cleaning described above.

T.V. reception is poor, and no internet up there, unless you have a cellular data plan on your phone, computer or tablet devices. There is wifi at Rocky Gap lodge and McDonald's should you want to check emails while out and about.

Privacy: Unless we are having work done on the grounds or at a second old house down the hill that we're gradually renovating on the property, you will likely not see anyone during your stay.

Closest towns for groceries: Paw Paw, WV is 11 miles, Hancock, MD is 28, Cumberland, MD is 22 miles.

Potential turn-offs: The water has a high iron content, so toilet and tub tend to get orange-colored film on them. This is not dirt. LimeAway does a pretty good job cleaning off the film, but it can show up again after a few showers. We filter drinking and cooking water with Britta filter pitcher and the filtered mountain water tastes great.

No cable or internet up there. Some cell plans may work for internet on phones or tablets. We have AT&T which gets a decent signal. Some others do not.

Because we are pet lovers, one dog is allowed with a non-refundable pet fee of $50 cash. (No cats please; many guests are allergic and dander lingers in the air).

Walks along Green Ridge Road and nearby trails, covered back deck for pleasant outdoor meals, sipping morning coffee or tea as mist rises in the field below. Access to washer and dryer, fishing pond.

We would not be on the property at the same time as guests, other than to check in. We have a second house on the property, several acres down the hill, which we are gradually renovating, so we, or our contractors, may be there some days during your stay, however we will respect your privacy in the upper house and you would not hear any noise from there.

We love the mountain views, clear, open skies, wildlife and farmer's cows roaming the fields. We also love to take long walks, and to drive to nearby trails and ponds for picnics.

11 miles away is the Paw Paw Tunnel, an interesting place for an outing. Rocky Gap state park is 12 miles away, and features a large fishing lake with paddle boats, kayaking and canoeing, a sandy beach area, volley ball and a restaurant.

Accès des voyageurs

Guests especially rave about walks along Green Ridge Road and nearby trails, the covered back deck for pleasant outdoor meals, sipping morning coffee or tea as mist rises in the field below. Access to washer and dryer, which are outside the main house, and access to fishing pond.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

We would not usually be on the property at the same time as guests, other than to check in if we can coordinate schedules. Otherwise a key is hidden on the porch for self check-in.

Beautiful views from a cozy cottage that can accommodate our large crew. And thanks for free provisions (coffee, bottled water, etc).

Precisely as described. It's extraordinarily remote -- which, for most people (I hope) is a good thing. You're literally in the middle of an immense beautiful forest, surrounded by wildlife and not much else. If that's what you're looking for, you've found it here, and will have a magical time.

Shell's cabin is just as it's described, but the pictures don't show how pretty the property really is. In addition, I saw groundhogs, rabbits, dear, an array of birds, including the humming variety, and a few young turkeys. Sunsets were lovely. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a little r-n-r in a homey atmosphere.

Exactly as described! It's a lovely cabin in the woods with gorgeous views! Saw lots of wildlife sitting on the back porch in the evenings. Love the secluded lot. Rocky Gap is close which we really enjoyed during the day.

Sheli was very helpful checking us in, and making sure we had everything we needed. After that, my wife and I were left to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting in peace. It was a lovely place.

I really enjoyed my stay at Sheli's cabin. The cabin was just as described and offers a very peaceful place to get away from the city. Sheli was a fantastic host and I would definitely stay here again in the future. Thanks again, Sheli!

Sheli's seasonal residence is perfectly nestled high atop of the Green Ridge mountain, providing comfort and convenient access to the countless opportunities to explore the Green Ridge State Forest and the C&O Canal system. Our group found the location to exactly as described, roomy, comfortable, clean and complete with a back porch overlooking Stafford Mountain to watch the sun rises in the morning. Sheli was a perfect hostess, always available and accessible and responsive to any question we had. We highly recommend this quiet hideaway in the forest!

I am a professional counselor working in Virginia. I specialize in assisting adults with disabilities. My husband and I own several nice properties, including our family home on St. Clements Bay in St. Mary's County, MD, two mountain cabins in western MD, and a little 1950s cottage in Falls Church, VA. We also have two mountain cabins with gorgeous views to get away from suburbia on a regular basis for peace and natural beauty. I am a humanist and enjoy hearing people's stories and journeys.

The houses offered here are old fixer -uppers. We have gradually made improvements and furnished them on a budget to be simple, affordable, comfortable and offer a few charms and convenience. I am a re-cycle, re-purpose, re-use-everything person! Therefore the furnishings are mostly hand-me-downs from relatives and friends, yard sales, etc. The places have a homey, eclectic feel rather than a hotel feel, and make it not a big deal if a child, dog or grownup breaks or spills something. Art and color are vital to me, so each place has a fun gallery of prints and paintings to uplift and inspire. We want guests to feel relaxed during their stay. My philosophy, especially since having a child, is "Life is Messy and unpredictable, Enjoy It Anyway!" We enjoy music, art, animal friends, reading, travel, good food, forest walks, movies, good company. We are non-smokers and limit alcohol to an occasional glass of wine or beer.
