Learned about Moriumius through a filmmaker producer (STORIES FROM TOHOKU) as a project that was born out of the recovery efforts after the 2011 earthquakes/tsunami. My nephew (college sophomore studying Environmental Policy) and I were only able to stay over a weekend, but we quickly developed a deep appreciation for the mission and beauty of Moriumius. Gentaro and his staff are excellent hosts. Meals and lodging are group settings. As independent travellers, there was no "set" schedule of activities, guests are encouraged but no obligated to participate in the ongoing operations, maintenance and creative projects at Moriumius. During our stay there there two international artists-in-residence who we were able to converse with and learn from. My nephew help staff mix clay and make bricks for a new brick oven that will enable the staff and guests to bake pizzas, breads, etc. back-breaking labor, but as a "city boy" he said the experience helped him connect with making things from the earth and appreciate the craftsmanship and labor that goes into building things. The meals were delicious, and the dormitory-style lodging comfortable. This fall, Moriumius will open family/private room lodging units for those not keen on dormitory style accommodations. Our stay at Moriumius has left an indelible sense of appreciation for the nature and culture of Ogatsu and greater Ishinomaki area. Many thanks to Gentaro and staff for a memorable stay.

I spent a week in Japan to close out a month in Asia and was fortunate to have a friend recommend a stay at MORIUMIUS. I've been to Japan multiple times, but this was by far my favorite experience. GETTING THERE: I flew into Sendai and then took the subway to the main Sendai train station. The subway is right in the airport and it is a quick 20 min ride to the train station. From there it is about a 45 minute bus ride to MORIUMIUS. You can also take the bullet train from Tokyo to Sendai and then catch the bus. The drive itself is really beautiful and MORIUMIUS itself is located in the hills above the ocean. LOCATION There are separate male and female bunkhouses, dining hall & bath. Everything is extremely clean and new. I would classify it as modern rustic. ACTIVITIES They offered different activities each day. I helped cut firewood, repair a fence and make Mochi. At night everyone gathers in the dining hall to eat. This was the highlight of my stay. The food was all sourced from the local area and was delicious. It was also a great opportunity to interact with others...and drink some sake! They have an outdoor traditional hot bath that was setup before dinner. Men and women have separate baths and just like everything else, very clean. Overall I highly recommend a stay here if you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience. I'm already trying to figure out when I can return.
