Finca Isla (***Directions Keyword Search***: "FINCA ISLA WELLNESS RETREAT") was once the largest coffee plantation in the Northern Zone of Costa Rica. Today it is a pioneering model of reforestation with native species. Guest House La Guaria is at one end of a row of 6 houses built solidly in 1982 from concrete and steel to house migrant coffee workers. In those days often large families occupied the house, sleeping on primitive bunk beds nailed to the walls and cooking on a wood fire in one corner. La Guaria has been completely renovated using the finest tropical woods, with extra end windows and a hand crafted porch addition. The hot water shower is supplied by a German on demand heater, and the mattresses are orthopedic. There is a full kitchen with pots and pans, an electric stove, coffee maker, and small refrigerator. The beds and other furniture were hand made on the farm in our woodworking shop from the finest Costa Rican hardwoods. Finca Isla is not just a place to stay but also a destination in itself, with rivers and rain forests to explore, and with most of the biodiversity of Costa Rica concentrated in one spot. The center of the farm has been reforested with over 100 native tree species. Fruit from these trees and from the mile of virgin rain forest along the rivers on both sides provide abundant food for monkeys and birds. Finca Isla is a birder's dream: with both the forest and river birds, including Parrots, Toucans, Mot Mots and the elusive Sun Bittern. A strict organic policy with no toxins helps maintain our perfect environment for the red frogs, Blue Morpho butterflies, and other delicate creatures. ALL PHOTOS HAVE BEEN TAKEN AT FINCA ISLA

  • I had no desire to be around anyone for my vacation except my wife, but our host couple were so generous, kind, knowledgeable, and interesting that it was impossible not to want being around them. They treated my wife and I like we were good friends, even though we just met. They set the bar for being great hosts. We fell asleep every night instantly to the sound of the jungle and crashing rapids. We woke up to a nutritional breakfast outdoors with loads of wildlife to watch. Price is totally reasonable. They are high enough in the mountains that no ac or heat are needed and never got bit by mosquitoes. Had no problems finding the place using (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps and a car rental. We miss y'all, you gave us one fantastic experience. Jeff & Maika.

  • We had a fantastic time at Josh & Ingrids. This property is very unique, an 80 acre reforestation project which features nearly extinct trees and lots of wildlife. We saw sloths, toucans, parrots, monkeys, and a special bird, the Sun Bittern. It is hard to describe how lush and beautiful the property is. Josh and Ingrid treated us to a wealth of knowledge on many subjects, from Costa Rica to natural health to ironworks. We were fortunate to have wine In the evenings and get to know the other travellers - an awesome couple from France and people from Spain and Quebec. There was mostly rain every day, but the temperatures were very warm and humid. The town of Agua Zarcas had delicious low cost food and everyone was extremely friendly, although not many spoke English. Josh and Ingrid know about many hidden gems in the area, such as natural hot springs, the best restaurants and where to find Sloths. We were even treated to a day of crushing sugarcane to make sugarcane juice!! All in all, a fantastic experience and we hope to be able to visit again.

  • Ingrid is a terrific host and I loved being at the finca (I actually ended up staying longer than planned.) The guesthouse is exactly as pictured, perfect for a couple or small family. Ingrid went above and beyond my expectations to make sure that I had a good experience in Aguas Zarcas. We walked around her property and across the river. I went in the river for an incredible cool-down when it was hot. We went to local places to hike in the rainforest and swim in the river. She took me to the local hot springs. And all the tourist attractions of La Fortuna/Arenal are within easy driving distance, although I saw more animal life at Ingrid's place than I did anywhere else. A small group of monkeys came through daily, looking for banana handouts, which they will take from your hand. There are all types of birds at her place. Every morning I sat on the porch drinking my coffee and watching hummingbirds fly and perch in the tropical flowers surrounding the guest house. I probably could have spent all my time watching birds and lying in a hammock reading with the constant sound of the rushing river in the background. Very relaxing. But there are too many other things to see and do. I can't recommend this place strongly enough. It is best to have a car in order to get to any tourist attractions you might want to see, or restaurants or shopping. It is possible to use the bus, but much more convenient to drive. Ants are a nuisance, but I found that to be true elsewhere in Costa Rica. (It is the tropics, after all.)

    Lisa2017-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • Simply put, this place is magical. From the moment we arrived we wish we had booked more time there. The house is beautiful, and the views from right outside the windows are AMAZING. We actually sat and bird (and monkey) watched over breakfast! We had read so many rave reviews about the hosts but unfortunately they were not around during our stay. We had a nightmare of a time trying to find the place in the dark & rain, but it was worth the adventure. Luckily there were two extremely kind & helpful guys working on the property, and Anael returned just before we left and actually gave us a ride to the bus station. It would have been great to have Ingrid & Josh's help and knowledge, but we really made the best of exploring on our own and loved our stay.

  • This was a beautiful, relaxing place to stay! Lorena was so welcoming and showed us her amazing artwork. It is very peaceful here and the breakfast Lorena made us was delicious!

  • Inlakech truly was a tropical paradise! Lorena was a wonderful host and we had a fabulous visit. Her brother Emilio took us for a hike in the rainforest (Thanks, Milo!) and the sumptuous breakfasts Lorena prepared were amazing. Aguas Zarcas is central to some great scenery and our only regret was that there was so much more we would have liked to have seen. Rod & Stephanie

  • This was by far the most amazing stay I've ever been too. The bungalow is private and secluded elevated above in its own mini jungle with a winding river wrapping around it. It's the perfect place for couples or anyone looking for a peaceful escape. Lorena decorated it from inside out beautifully. There is a mini fridge, coffee machine, and mini bar. Lorena sets up an amazing breakfast on the patio outside. It is the ultimate stay and Lorena is the most gracious host you will ever find. It was sad to leave and I can't wait to return.

  • This was absolutely one of our favorite stops along our journey! The place was absolutely magical!! We felt like we were in a fairytale. The hammock was so nice, the breakfast delicious, and the host was super friendly and helpful! We arrived at dark, and we walked back to candles lighting our path, lanterns in the trees, lights twinkling throughout the place. We woke up and were fortunate to see a sloth and toucan right above us! We wished we had more time here! Magical, peaceful, perfect!

    Melissa2016-05-25T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Inlakech was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. Lorena was an amazing host, who welcomed us with open arms and made us feel very comfortable. The pictures on airbnb do not do this place justice! Inlakech was incredible and we really enjoyed just sitting on the porch listening to the creeks running by. The bed was comfortable, and the room was romantic and calming. Lorena's breakfast was delicious and filling, and our only complaint is that we didn't have more time to spend at Inlakech.

    Marc2015-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Both Lorena, and her place are amazing. I have stayed in at least a dozen Airbnb's in Mexico, Costa Rica, USA, and Thailand, and Lorena's place is easily a favorite. There is something so quietly magical about this place. I highly recommend staying here. There are hot springs in the area, and great hiking, flora and fauna. We even saw a sloth in her yard. She is simply a wonderful human being, artist, and healer sharing her light with the world.

  • Just as described, lovely guest houses and warm hosts! Fabulous secluded property, where the sound of the running river lulls you into tranquil state of mind. perfect!

  • Our stay at Ingrid's was wonderful! Ingrid manages to create a real family feeling in this small lodge. She's a such a sweet person who takes great care of her guests. We loved the cabin, especially the fully equipped kitchen and the porch with hammocks, our favorite spot to relax. On the big deck, we enjoyed getting to know the other travelers who we happily shared some wine with in the evenings. We were sad to leave!

    Jennifer2016-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Ingrid's place. She had such great recommendations of waterfalls and hot springs to go to in the area! She even brought us some fruit from the area to try, let us try her homemade chocolate, and as we were about to leave we got to feed monkeys on the side of the house! We loved our stay and would definitely recommended staying with her.

  • This is a rare opportunity to stay in a jewel in Costa Rica! The 2 rivers meet & create an energy that is hard to describe, but feels so good! Monkeys, birds, sugar cane, cacao & fresh coconuts, all on-site! You could spend all day in a hammock & feel like you didn't miss a thing!

Danke, Ingrid!

  • Ingrid and Josh were just fantastic hosts. Very nice, good conversations and plenty helpful. They showed us hidden places (8 waterfalls, hot springs) and took us on a small tour through there huge compound. The rooms are specious, clean and had everything you need. Definitely a place we will hope to visit again on our next Costa Rica trip.

    Dominic2017-04-20T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful (EMAIL HIDDEN)e for a week or more, there's so much to see and do locally and our lovely host Ingrid showed us some fantastic places in and around Aguas Zarcas. The accommodation is very comfortable, safe and tastefully decorated. The setting is beautiful, far enough away that the noise of the road and town centre don't disturb but amenities are easily accessible on foot. I especially enjoyed spending time on the Finca - walking, watching wildlife, enjoying tasty treats from the land and chatting to Ingrid and the other guests. I hope I get the chance to come back.

  • Thank you so much for everything! I honestly cannot think of anything to offer as a suggestion, as this box asks, as everything was beyond perfection. Thank you for giving the four of us a day we will never forget, in a place we always remember. Your kindhearted spirit, inquisitive mind and beautiful space were unpredictable but unsurpassable. Thank you. Robert.

This recently remodeled farm house is spacious and clean. It is located just a 15 minute drive to several Thermal water resorts. Supermarket restaurant /bar just a 5 minute walk. The center or the town is short 5 minute drive where you can find shops, banks, restaurants, pharmacies, clinics, bars and more. Our place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families (with kids), and groups. Plenty of extra space to camp or sleeping bags.
Even thought this spacious cute house is just a short drive from the town center, it is surrounded by farms. Here you can experience the quite that only nature can offer you. Awesome deal compared with any hotel in the area. If you arrive by bus, it cost about $5 to take a taxi from the town center to the house.
Typical quite country neighborhood. Just 5 houses on our street. Thus very private and calm. As we mentioned before, there is a Restaurant/Bar/Karaoke just a short walk from the house were you can enjoy cold beer, cocktails and great food. It is not expensive, a beer and a plate will cost you about $7. The super market is just across the Bar. It is a medium size place but loaded with basic, from candy, food to alcohol.
  • I think that the rooms should have fan, there was very hot. The wifi was not présent as indicated on site. Otherwise it was a good place for anybody like a quiet place

  • They were awesome. The house is super clean and comfortable. The village is super cute and very closed to nearby hot springs. We really enjoyed staying there. We will stay there again in our next trip. We really recommend it. Thank you.

  • Our family stayed for a month and found that it was the perfect spot for peace, and taking it easy. First, about the area: The supermarket that was walking distance away provided us with basic necessities (however not as many fruit and veggies if that's something that's really important to you). Additionally, the bar that was also within walking distance had great food and was a great way to meet new people and get more out of your experience. A river is about a 30 min walk from the house and if you make it there, it's super peaceful and beautiful. On the land and in the surrounding area, we were able to benefit from the coconut trees and the lemon/orange trees. However, there are other trees in the area but there was no fruit on because it was out of season. Now the house: Its a very simple setup. I'd definitely recommend keeping windows and doors open during the day because it gets really hot, or bring a fan. The kitchen was functional with a hot plate and other basic needs. If you would want to wash clothes, be prepared to hand wash. There was great seating in the kitchen and there's a cute bench in an extra little dining area. The gazebo outside is marvelous and a great place to be to watch nature and actually get some relief from the heat. Bugs were a bit of an issue (mostly ants and moths) so the main thing would be to NEVER leave food out or crumbs because the ants will attack. Another thing to note is, if you do not have a car, getting around could be difficult. Taxis were our favorite way to get around and take us into the city which was about a 7-10 minute drive. It was about an hour+ walk though so definitely taking a vehicle is recommended. All in all, the house is simple and functional with just enough without being too much. Some things may take getting used to (depending on how long you're staying) and not having Wifi was a bit of a negative, especially if you have work to do, but the owner was extremely helpful and the stay was pleasant.

    Tatyana2017-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at this house. Is cozy , super clean. The green areas are lovely. We spend time at the gazebo enjoying the country view. It is very close to the Hot springs spas. Just 10 minute drive from most of them. We truly enjoyed our stay there. Will definitely stay here during our next trip to Costa Rica.

  • We had a fantastic time during our stay at San Cayetano Farm. The farm is easy to find and conveniently located – close enough to many attractions, yet in an area that’s not overrun by tourists. The house is beautiful, spacious, comfortable, and clean, with many amenities, making it a perfect choice for our group of 6. Each morning we were treated to a delicious Costa Rican breakfast prepared in our kitchen by Roxanne. Isabel was a great host, who not only answered all of our inquiries in a prompt manner, but offered several suggestions for nearby attractions, all of which turned out to be amazing. We especially enjoyed Termales Del Bosque, which were just as Isabel has described them: simple, but beautiful thermal springs located just a short drive away from the farm. The highlight of our stay had to have been the horseback riding tour of the farm and the surrounding areas. The horses were tame and friendly and Jose Daniel and Henry who led the tour were a wealth of knowledge and keen to show us some beautiful spots. During the tour we were treated to some fresh fruit and coconut water and at the end we got to see some of the prized horses trained by Henry. We would definitely stay at the farm again and can’t recommend it enough.

  • Our stay at San Cayetano Farmhouse was the nicest BNB of all during our stay in Costa Rica. The home was very private, spacious, extremely clean. The family that watches over the house are so pleasant, helpful and friendly. This home has a lovely wrap around deck for your early morning coffee or your evening gatherings with family and friends. Roxanne cooks a wonderful Costa Rican style breakfast every morning before you head out for the day. If your coming to Costa Rica because you enjoy wild life and want to avoid the tourist trappings, this will be the place for you. We were awoken by the sound of howling monkeys and birds of all kinds in the morning. With a rental car this BNB is centrally located to Poas Volcano and LaFortuna near lake Arenal. We would make this BNB the first choice to come back to. All 3 couples loved this home and had a very good time staying there.

  • When renting off a webs site you often get a little disappointed once your are there . . .but not here! It is every thing that is says it will be and more! Awesome wood flooring, wood everywhere! Georgeous! Fully equipped kitchen and I mean fully. Right amount of covers on the bed for the nights that were a bit cooler. We did not need the AC. Great welcome from Isabel with very helpful advise on driving there and site seeing. Roxanne's homemade breakfasts were very good and plentyful. The grounds were clean, lots of activity to watch, all sorts of birds and squirrels . . .. It rained a bit when we were there but the temperature was good just hot enough without humidity.

  • The pictures and description do not give justice to this amaizing place. Isabel and Alvaro gave us an opportunity to stay at this dream house and we are very greatful for it! The house was spotless, beautiful, and cozy. The grounds of the farm outside the house are breathtaking. Isabel's entire family makes you feel welcome and right at home. They were extremely helpful and sweet! Wonderful Roxanne made us delicious breakfasts every morning. Also, the horseback riding organized just for us by Hector, who spent all his life raising and training horses, was very nice. We absolutely loved Isabel's house and would recommend it to everyone!

  • Everything was great with this house. Large and comfortable with an amazing garden. The host want it to be perfect and it was. Thank you very much and good luck in the future.

  • The best I've ever had. Even if Isabel wasn't there - all the neighbours helped us. The house is just amazing, so is Isabel.

  • we stayed at isabel place for 3 days and it was really nice. Roxana cooked used breakfast (wich was delicious) and the place itself was perfect. A lot of place, super clean and well equiped. the location is also nice, calm and you can explore around. Isabel sister meet us to make sure everything was ok and she recommended some activities. I recomend this place.

  • Beautiful and peaceful home and grounds. House was very comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable! Both Isabel and Margarita were very helpful, especially since we chose not to get a car in Costa Rica (very glad we didn't) and the location is fairly remote and Venecia is a small rural village. Roxana's tipico breakfasts were tasty! Loved birdwatching right out the windows/from the back porch and wandering the grounds. Had a fantastic experience when we saw a 3-toed sloth on the fence next door, and howler monkeys right next to us in the trees! Got a kick out of the peacock who thinks he owns the place and the turkeys and deer out back.

This house is Located in San Carlos, a place known for its nature, and only 20 minutes away from Dr Paradise Hot Springs, Hotel Tucano Resort and Thermal Sap, and La Marina wildlife Rescue Center. It is perfect to enjoy the nature, life without trafic, and heavy noise. It is in family or in couple, almost with friend you will enjoy. At night if you are lucky you can see the milke way; because we dont have visual contamination.
we are close to the farms with animals such as cows, donkeys, chickens, also you can see monkeys, birds, toucans, otters, lazy bears, toads, macaws.

    LUNA HOUSE
The Magical Jungle Tree House is new and hand-crafted, one of 3 casitas and 2 treehouses at the Bio Thermales natural resort organically integrated into our 35 acre rainforest. Guests enjoy free 24 hour access to the 12 natural hot and cool springs pools of various temperatures and rainforest trails. 45 minute drive from La Fortuna and Volcano Arenal, 3 hour drive from the SJO airport, 4 hour drive from Liberia airport. No children under 5 years for safety reasons: the height of the tree house.
The Magical Jungle Tree House is handcrafted with many artistic wood work and furniture, a tile bathroom with a flash on-demand water heater for the shower, and a nicely laid out and well equipped kitchen. It is set back a bit in the rainforest, but still close to the hot and cool springs. The balcony almost completely surrounds the tree house. Our hot springs are ancient “deep Earth” sources that bubble up through the rainforest floor, laden with mineral-rich waters that have been in the Earth for at least 10,000 years. Our waters are rich in bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium, low in sulfur, and slightly acidic -- qualities shared by many of the world's best hot springs. Five of our 9 organic form hot springs pools are located in the rainforest, and 4 hot springs pools as well as a small and a large cool spring swimming pool are located in a meadow, surrounded by rainforest (see below for more information). The small and large cool springs pools both have water slides, and there is a small water slide in one of the shallow and moderate temperature pools for small children. Note on wifi -- we have a fiber optic cable to the main office that is about 98% reliable, but had to install repeaters to bring wifi signal to the casitas and tree houses. The repeaters are not as reliable, especially in bad weather. However, we can help you send or receive email one way or another via the fiber optic cable. The Treehouse is built to strict Costa Rican building codes. To see all our listings, including the Colibri Casita3, please go to https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/54000 and on the left side of the page three listings will show. At the bottom of them, click on “View all listings” to see all 5 listings. You can check availability of each accommodation by clicking on the "Calendar" tab above the main photo on each listing. Treehouse features: (see floor-plan for all details): • Perched high among the rainforest trees, the Tree House has large screened areas for circulation of naturally cooler breezes. It also has fans. • All onsite hot springs and recreation activities included, including 24 hour access to the hot springs and cool spring swimming pools • The Treehouse2 is all on one floor, with a Queen sized bed with orthopedic mattress and hypoallergenic bedding. • There is also a twin-sized bed that can double a a settee with hypoallergenic bedding • Hand-crafted rustic furniture from naturally harvested trees on the land • Main floor kitchen with refrigerator, micro-wave, rice-cooker, coffee maker, basic kitchenware • Bathroom with flash on-demand hot-water heater • Wrap around balcony for relaxing and animal and bird watching • Laundry service at $5 charge per load • Short walk to rainforest and hot springs pools • No telephone or television • WiFi internet for your laptop -- if reliable 24 hour internet is essential to you, please message us for suggestions. • Hosts Kathy and Bernie live onsite • Languages: English, Spanish, German One time $10 cleaning fee; thereafter housecleaning services every 3 days are free. Bio Thermales Hot Springs features: • Our hot springs pools are all-natural mineral water just as it flows from the Earth • Rainforest Pools from 90° - 102°F (31° - 40°C) • Grotto Pools in meadow flow from the 104°F/42°C source pool onward into two larger and progressively cooler pools which are handicap-accessible and suitable for small children. • Cool Pool in meadow is 90°F/31°C mineral water flowing from the thermal creek • 2 Swimming pools with continuous flow of natural cold spring water (88 degrees) - one is 1 to 1.5 meters deep, and the larger is 1.6 meters deep. • Bathhouse in meadow with handicap accessible bathrooms and showers • “Ranchos” – roofed tables with concrete floors and grills for picnics Other Activities on our 35 acre rainforest reserve: • Bird-watching: many types of toucans, oropendulas, parrots, hummingbirds, and the rare green macaw • Rainforest: enjoy it from the casita porch or hot springs pools, take easy walks on paths or more adventurous hikes • Fossils – enjoy our collection or hunt (gently) for your own • Wildlife: two-toed sloths, iguanas, capuchin and mantled howler monkeys, tree frogs, birds, butterflies, and many others. We are a 45 minute drive from the many activities in Fortuna and Volcano Arenal -- such as ziplines, hanging bridges, white water rafting, slow river floats or kayaking through wildlife sanctuaries -- or a 1.5 hour drive to La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Volcano Poas. Bio Thermales Hot Springs is open to the public for day use of the hot springs, and most of our day visitors are Costa Ricans, so you may also meet new Tico friends. Bio Thermales is generally not crowded, however, except on major holidays and Sundays. Food/Meals: The Tree House has a kitchen. There are many restaurants and a good supermarket within a 15 minute drive. Traditional Costa Rican meals can be delivered from a local caterer for very reasonable prices (Costa Rican food is tasty but not spicy). Otherwise, for those without cars, we can call a taxi or try to synchronize a food shopping trip when we go to town for errands. Three hours of daylight are needed to safely drive here from the SJO airport before sunset at 5:30 pm. The drive through mountainous cloud forests is splendid in daylight, but prone to fog and rain, especially at night, creating hazardous visibility conditions after dark. Finding our countryside location will also be far easier if you arrive the first time before sunset. If your plane lands in the morning to noon at SJO airport – or 11:00 am at Liberia airport -- you can drive here directly from the airport. Otherwise, it is safer to book a room near the airport on your first night, or ask us to book a private driver and have a rental car delivered at no extra charge. Last night in Costa Rica: Driving directly to the airport on the same day is possible if you book a flight in the afternoon. Please be aware that you must be at the airport 2.5 hours before departure. If you have an early morning departing flight it is basically necessary to stay near the airport on the night before.
We are out in the countryside in a non-touristy rural area of family farms, orchards and rainforest, off the beaten tourist track. Guests should expect a natural environment, integrated into the rainforest. We are a 45 minute drive from the many activities in Fortuna/Volcano Arenal, including volcano hikes, ziplines, swimming in the pristine waters below the La Fortuna Waterfall, white water rafting and slow "safari float" rafting to see monkeys, sloths and other animals. Closer to us is a slow river raft tour, rainforest hikes or horseback riding, and a visit to the Iguana Bridge with many large iguanas within a 20 minute drive.

  • Kathy and Bernie were very helpful in our days at the treehouse! They set us up with the best driver/tour guide in the world, Frank Herrera!! He made us feel like locals. He speaks great English, he knows everything about the natural vegetation and the local animals, and he knows the best and most affordable restaurants! He showed us how to live the Pura Vida life during our trip and more than that, he really did change our lives and our outlook on life. Frank Herrera is an amazing man and tour guide and he really loves what he does. I will definitely revisit biothermales again. Thank you for everything. Pura Vida!!!

  • This is a wonderful place to stay, especially if you are a family! The hot springs were a special treat!

  • I stayed two nights at Bio Thermales with my best girlfriend and it was a wonderful and charming experience throughout. Kathy and Bernie are lovely, hands-on hosts who go out of their way to make sure you get there easily, enjoy yourself and take in all the wonderful amenities and gorgeous grounds at the hot springs. The places are well-kept and clean and we scheduled amazing massages as well, which I highly recommend. The pools come in all shapes, sizes and temperatures and we were pretty much giddy the entire stay. I'd recommend going to the grocery store in Muelle for wine, beer and groceries if you're coming from the Fortuna area. Otherwise, Kathy provides excellent and thorough resources and information about the area and activities. Highly recommend.

  • Such a fantastic property! We only stayed one night unfortunately. Stay two nights and spend a whole day on the property and in the town!

    Shea2017-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • The new treehouse is awesome!! - I had the honour of being the first guest in it - such a pleasure. Monkey and iguana gazing in the trees, water burbling in the stream underneath lulling me to sleep, gorgeous interior spaces with such attention to detail and aesthetics. So private and yet so close to caring hosts and thermal waters - an oasis of blissfulness to melt into and become one with nature.

    Christine2016-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • The tree house was even better than we expected! Secluded, but still in a great location to sightsee fortuna and other attractions!

    Anna2017-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • The treehouse is as beautiful as it appears and the property is wonderful. It's hot during the day but cools down at night. The hot springs are clean and we spotted toucans, iguanas and other wild life. Kathy provided extensive and hugely helpful information before we arrived, including about the best way to go about renting a car without getting ripped off. The catering that is delivered to the treehouse was all delicious and of excellent value. My only complaint is that the bed was very, very firm. It basically felt like we were sleeping on the ground. We're still glad we had the experience of staying a treehouse in the rainforest though, as it is a very magical place.

There are a total of 3 bedrooms, each with its own shower and bathroom. The master bedroom includes a comfortable tub in the bathroom.

Experience the jungle by hiking on the property to beautiful view points and experience howler monkey encounters. The upper part of the property is part of the Juan Blanco Castro National Park. The property boasts a tropical fruit orchard where you can enjoy freshly made exotic juices depending on the season. The many fruits attract exotic birds where parrots and toucans often abound.

Nice and new apartment in Venecia de San Carlos. The apartment is perfectly located on the second floor just 2 blocks from the center of the town. It was built during the beginning of this year, surrounded by green areas, small shops and nice people at a very familiar town in San Carlos.
The perfect location gives you the chance to enjoy the best of a Costa Rican small town, with easy access, at less than 2 hours from San José, and access to turistic and natural areas.
Venecia is a very small and happy town, most people know each other and are very used to say hi to every one, the place is super safe, the air and the water are great and you will get the opportunity to know different places near there.

Beautiful House Cariblanco Finca Isla Wellness Retreat: sleeps 4 at Finca Isla nestled between 2 falling rivers and virgin rainforest, birding, hiking, monkeys, butterflies, frogs, sloths, walk to groceries and restaurants. 10 minutes to hot springs, zoo. Finca Isla now offers its own guided (English) shuttle service, from and to the airport and elsewhere. 70F to 82F - perfect!
Finca Isla (***Directions Keyword Search***: "FINCA ISLA WELLNESS RETREAT") was once the largest coffee plantation in the Northern Zone of Costa Rica. Today it is a pioneering model of reforestation with native species. Guest House Cariblanco is in the middle a row of 6 houses built solidly in 1982 from concrete and steel to house migrant coffee workers. In those days often large families occupied the house, sleeping on primitive bunk beds nailed to the walls and cooking on a wood fire in one corner. Cariblanco has been completely renovated using the finest tropical woods, and has a handcrafted porch addition. Finca Isla is not just a place to stay but also a destination in itself, with rivers and rainforests to explore, and with most of the biodiversity of Costa Rica concentrated in one spot.

  • Finca Isla was one of the most unique parts of our Costa Rican vacation. It is off the beaten tourist trail, and all the better for it. The property, a converted coffee plantation, was gorgeous; we could have spent our whole time exploring it. However, Aguas Zarcas and the surrounding area were so full of great excursions and adventures that we had to venture out, as well. We went to multiple hot springs, hiked along rivers and through jungle, marveled at waterfalls and swam in the beautiful light blue water of Rio Aguas Zarcas. We spent four days there without a dull moment (except those wonderful, purposefully dull moments lying in the hammocks reading), and it seemed like we could have spent four weeks in the same way. Ingrid and her husband Josh were exceptionally hospitable, knowledgeable and fascinating--really great people. Their property was awesome, and the rooms were spacious, clean and well-maintained. The town and surrounding areas offer all the best things about a Costa Rican getaway with none of the tourist trappings. Finca Isla is a wonderful place to stay, and Ingrid and Josh are wonderful hosts.

  • Lovely accommodation in a beautiful setting. Ingrid was very friendly from the moment we arrived suggesting things to do/places to go which aren't necessarily known to holiday goers in the area, (the Tope, a local "horse festival" was great!). Finca isla itself is picturesque and we spent a day walking through the trees and swimming in the river. All in all a great experience and would highly recommend.

    Iwan2017-02-28T00:00:00Z

The Mariposa Casita is one of 3 charming cottages at our Bio Thermales Hot Springs natural resort organically integrated into our 35 acre rainforest preserve with 12 natural hot and cool springs pools in the north-central Costa Rican heartland. Guests enjoy free 24 hour access to the hot and cool springs pools and rainforest trails. 45 minute drive from Fortuna/Volcano Arenal; 3 hour drive from SJO airport, 4 hour drive from Liberia airport. For more tranquility, please book on weekdays.
The Mariposa (Butterfly) casita is one of 3 hand-crafted casitas and 2 tree houses at our Bio Thermales Hot Springs eco resort, with many charming hand-crafted doors and features. The Mariposa is wheel chair accessible. Please message us before booking if we will be either your first or last destination in Costa Rica to before booking if you wish to drive directly from the airport to us, so we can determine if this is safe and feasible. All roads from the SJO airport pass through cloud forests, which can be foggy even in the day, causing poor visibility on narrow, curving mountain roads, especially after sunset 5:30 and night driving is highly discouraged until drivers have quite some experience on Costa Rican roads. We highly recommend booking on weekdays for more privacy and tranquility, as we have more day visitors to our hot springs from 9 am to 6 pm on the weekends, especially Sundays. If your reservation includes a Sunday, we highly recommend planning a day outing to the many wonderful nearby activities. We cannot guarantee our usual tranquil conditions on Sundays from 9 am to 6 pm. Our hot springs are ancient “deep Earth” sources that bubble up through the rainforest floor, bringing mineral-rich waters that have been in the Earth for at least 10,000 years. Our waters are rich in bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium, low in sulfur, and slightly acidic, qualities shared by many of the world's best hot springs. Mariposa Casita features (see floor-plan for all details): • Wheel chair accessible • Air-conditioning (but you probably won't need it) • All onsite hot springs and recreation activities included • Queen sized bed with orthopedic mattress and hypoallergenic bedding • Two twin-sized bed/settee with thick foam mattress and hypoallergenic bedding • Artistically hand-crafted rustic furniture from naturally harvested trees on the land • Large kitchen with refrigerator, micro-wave, coffee maker, electric skillet and basic kitchenware • Tiled bathroom with real hot-water heater • Porch with handmade table, swing, hammock • Maid service every 3 days included • Laundry service at extra charge per load • Short walk to rainforest and hot springs pools • No telephone or television • Hosts Kathy and Bernie live onsite • Languages: English, Spanish, German, limited French Note on wifi -- we have a fiber optic cable to the main office that is about 98% reliable, but had to install repeaters to bring wifi signal to the casitas and tree houses. The repeaters are not as reliable, especially in bad weather. However, we can help you send or receive email one way or another via the fiber optic cable. One time $10 cleaning fee; thereafter housecleaning services every 3 days are free. We are a 45 minute drive from the many activities in Fortuna and Volcano Arenal -- such as ziplines, hanging bridges, white water rafting, slow river floats or kayaking through wildlife sanctuaries -- or a 1.5 hour drive from La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Catarata del Toro or Volcano Poas National Park. We are happy to help guests arrange activities through trustworthy tour guides and companies. Food/Meals: The Mariposa has a large well equipped kitchen. There are many restaurants and a good supermarket within a 15 minute drive. Traditional Costa Rican meals can be delivered from a local caterer for very reasonable prices (Costa Rican food is tasty but not spicy). Otherwise, we can call a taxi or private driver, if you will not have a car. We recommend either ordering a catered dinner in advance for your first evening and/or next morning breakfast, or buying and bringing groceries to cook because we are 4 km from the main paved road and driving after dark is highly discouraged until drivers have quite some experience on Costa Rican roads. Also, most guests prefer to settle in upon arrival and not to have to get back in the car and drive out to dinner. We provide a Catering Menu to each guest once reserved, but the caterer requires advance notice of selected meals and TIMES guests would like meals delivered. We do not have a liquor license and guests must bring their own beer/wine/rum etc. The tap water is safe to drink, and we sell soft drinks, fruit juices, and other non-alcohol beverages, snacks and ice cream. Spa services: massage and facial services are available by advance appointment by a masseuse from Quesada. She is not available on Mondays. Standard massage = $30/hour + a one-time transport fee of $25. Great for couples, solo adventurers, and families. Driving from SJO airport: We highly recommend at least a small 4 wheel drive car. The last 3 kilometers are country roads. If your plane lands in the morning or mid-day, you can drive here directly from the airport. Otherwise, it is safer to book a room near the airport on your first night or we can help you arrange a private professional driver. Last night in Costa Rica: To drive directly to the SjO airport on the same day as your departing flight, you will need an afternoon or evening departing flight. For early morning departing flights, it is necessary to stay your last night near the airport.

  • I really enjoyed this small version of a hot springs resort in the Arenal area. It was magical at night to sit in the natural hot spring and cool off in the adjoining fresh water pools. The hosts, Kathy & Bernie were great! Attentive but not overly prying. My casita was much more spacious than I had imagined. It was really neat to stay there. I read about the ants from another reviewer. There were tiny ants that appeared if you left any food out. I thought it might be the more humid climate but no, I saw these tiny ants in EVERY location in Costa Rica. But they are no big deal. I was grateful for the other reviewer who cautioned that it got busy over the weekend. It was pretty busy during the week despite the really rocky long dirt road. I wouldn't want it any busier. I also really enjoyed the hiking trail on the property. It was just difficult enough to work up a sweat. The only drawback to this place is the location ends up being far from nearby volcano tours so you have to pay a good amount extra for a tour guide to drive you 45 min. Luckily Kathy was extremely helpful in arranging that well before I got there. Everything she booked for me worked out great! I was much happier being there than at a touristy and crowded hot springs.

  • Kathleen Dyhr and Bernd Zabel built a beautiful compound of colorful discreet "casitas" surrounded by banana and coconut trees, and a treehouse (featured in Fortune magazine's treehouses around the world), with hot (42 degrees Centigrade) and cool (33 C) baths a short walk into the rainforest under a canopy of 500 year old trees occasionally visited by howler monkeys and crusty iguanas. The casitas are emblematic of the buddhist background and environmental respect of the owners: colorful tranquil beauty gently integrated with the stately 500 year old trees. Our "casita" with hand-made and hand carved wooden doors and a four poster bed crafted from found wood, was spacious, private, had a big porch under a canopy for watching sunsets and stars and for drinking early morning coffee, and it had views out the windows on the forest. You wake to entrancing bird sounds you've likely never heard, and a bag of fresh Costa Rican coffee. The owners and the staff are meticulous about cleanliness and always cognizant of environmental concerns, (recycling is de rigueur), and they've made a path through the lush, fragrant forest for a great, sometimes difficult hike up and down a mountain so guests can have an intimate experience of the origins of life. Our hosts were helpful to us in every way at creating a base for exploration anywhere in a magnificent country. Any questions you have, they provide information- brochures, contacts, directions, events, and even take you into nearby towns when they have trips planned. It was pure joy eating a meal of arroz con frijoles, or "gallopinto", and grilled chicken with fresh greens prepared by a neighbour and brought hot to our casita by her son on our first evening there. It was an option arranged by the owners who can also arrange for a massage, great after a long hike and a soak in the hot springs. They also provide wifi which can be slow because of the mandatory concrete construction; however, a short walk to the recepcion solves that and gives you an opportunity to chat at the picnic tables with visitors and hosts. One of the biggest joys I experienced besides the fantastic hiking along back roads and through the hills, was getting acquainted with Kathy, Bernd and Johan and their little black lab, Pepe. Only two words come close to describing these adventurous people and their creation- Pura Vida.

Finca Isla (***Directions Keyword Search***: "FINCA ISLA WELLNESS RETREAT") was once the largest coffee plantation in the Northern Zone of Costa Rica. Today it is a pioneering model of reforestation with native species. Guest House Heliconia is in the middle of a row of 6 houses built solidly in 1982 from concrete and steel to house migrant coffee workers. In those days often large families occupied the house, sleeping on primitive bunk beds nailed to the walls and cooking on a wood fire in one corner. Heliconia has been completely renovated using the finest tropical woods and a handcrafted porch addition. Finca Isla is not just a place to stay but also a destination in itself, with rivers and rainforests to explore, and with most of the biodiversity of Costa Rica concentrated in one spot.

  • Best choice we made to stay here. Peaceful, relaxing, and serene. We felt right at home and welcome right from the beginning. We got in late due to a late flight and driving from Liberia and Ingrid made sure that our guest house was ready and even though we arrived at a little after 1 am, she still came out to welcome us. Sweetest woman ever. Took the time to even ask my daughter if she would like a horse back ride and the fun things just around her property to see. The plant life she has on her property is amazing.

The Tucano (Toucan) casita is a masonry block cottage with many artistically handcrafted wood work and furniture and hand carved exterior and interior doors. The kitchen is small but well equipped for cooking. The bathroom is tiled, some tiles are hand carved with local animals, and it has a flash on-demand water heater for the shower. We highly recommend booking on weekdays for more privacy and tranquility, as we have more day visitors from 9 am to 6 pm to our hot springs on the weekends, especially Sundays. Tucano Casita features (see floor-plan for all details): • Air-conditioning (but you probably won't need it) • All onsite hot springs and recreation activities included • Queen sized bed with orthopedic mattress and hypoallergenic bedding • Twin-sized bed/settee with thick foam mattress and hypoallergenic bedding • Hand-crafted rustic furniture from naturally harvested trees on the land • Kitchen with refrigerator, micro-wave, coffee maker, electric skillet and basic kitchenware • Tiled bathroom with real hot-water heater • Porch with handmade rocking chair, swing, hammock • Maid service every 3 days included • Laundry service at extra charge per load • Short walk to rainforest and hot springs pools • No telephone or television • Hosts Kathy and Bernie live onsite • Languages: English, Spanish, German, limited French Note on wifi -- we have a fiber optic cable to the main office that is about 98% reliable, but had to install repeaters to bring wifi signal to the casitas and tree houses. The repeaters are not as reliable, especially in bad weather. However, we can help you send or receive email one way or another via the fiber optic cable. One time $10 cleaning fee; thereafter housecleaning services every 3 days are free. The smallest has a small water slide for young children. • Two cool Thermal Pools in meadow is 90°F/31°C mineral water flowing from the thermal creek • 2 Fresh Spring Water swimming pools (all natural, continuous water flow) from a forest spring. Both cool spring pools have water slides. • Two Bathhouses in meadow (one of which is wheel chair accessible) and one in the rain forest with changing rooms, bathrooms and showers • “Ranchos” – roofed tables with concrete floors and grills for picnics Other Activities on our 35 acre rainforest reserve: • Bird-watching: many types of toucans, oropendulas, parrots, hummingbirds, and the rare green macaw • Rainforest: enjoy it from the casita porch or hot springs pools, take easy walks on paths or more adventurous hikes • Fossils – enjoy our collection or hunt (gently) for your own • Wildlife: two-toed sloths, iguanas, capuchin and mantled howler monkeys, tree frogs, birds, butterflies, even a jaguarundi if you are lucky and quiet. Bio Thermales Hot Springs is open to the public for day use of the hot springs, and most of our day visitors are Costa Ricans, so you may also meet new Tico friends. Bio Thermales is generally not crowded, however, except on major holidays and Sundays. To see all our listings, please go to https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/54000 and on the left side of the page three listings will show. At the bottom of them, click on “View all listings” to see all 5 listings. Food/Meals: The casita has a kitchen. There are many restaurants and a good supermarket within a 15 minute drive. Traditional Costa Rican meals can be delivered from a local caterer for very reasonable prices (Costa Rican food is tasty but not spicy). Otherwise, we can call a taxi or driver. Driving from SJO airport: We highly recommend at least a small 4 wheel drive car. The last 3 kilometers are country roads.

  • Our stay with Kathy and Bernie was wonderful! The hot springs were amazing (especially when you go early in the morning and have them to yourselves), the cabin had everything we needed, the longer hiking trail had challenging parts but was a great morning addition, and Kathy was full of great recommendations. We spent our mornings at the hot springs with coffee and our evenings on the patio with cocktails. We rented a 4x4 car and would definitely recommend it as the property is fairly secluded from restaurants/stores/etc. A wonderful stay!!

  • Kathy and Bernie and their team of staff are wonderful hosts and the property is gorgeous. Kathy ensured we had everything we needed before and during our stay which was much appreciated. Our casita was well appointed with everything we needed and the hot springs were amazing! This is a very family friendly place and our 7 month old loved to play in the warm springs with us. We really liked being amongst the locals who work and use the hot springs. This felt like an authentic Costa Rican experience; we would highly recommend!

  • Staying at Kathys and Bernies Biothermales is such a fantastic experience! They were extremely welcoming, warm and helpful hosts and we don't think we could have discovered any more beautiful place. Kathy and Bernie have created a little oasis on their piece of land, where they invite you to explore and enjoy all the exciting exotic flora and fauna their rainforest has to offer and to simply unwind and relax in the warm thermal water bassins, which are all beautifully fitted into the natural environment. The Casita is lovely with adorable self furnished wooden interior, it's spacious, clean and located just next to the rainforest! So nice just to simply lay in the hammock on the terrace in the evening and listen to all the various sounds coming from the inside of the forest! We couldn't have asked for more - a big thank you, once again, Kathy and Bernie!

  • The only regret I have about staying at Kathy and Bernie's casita was that I didn't stay longer! It was my first time in CR and my girlfriend and I stayed two nights....I really wish I stayed longer. I was in Costa Rica for two weeks and it was hands down my favorite accommodation.

We are in the countryside in a non-touristy rural area of family farms, orchards and rainforest, off the beaten tourist track. The last 2 km are unpaved country roads. Guests should expect a natural environment, integrated into the rainforest, with the usual wildlife native to a tropical rainforest (except there are no large jungle cats like jaguars). Closer to us is a slow river raft tour, rainforest hikes or horseback riding, and a visit to the Iguana Bridge with many large iguanas within a 15 minute drive. We are off the beaten tourist track, in a rural community of rainforest, dairy farms and orchards, yet only a 45 minute drive to We are a 45 minute drive from the many activities in Fortuna and Volcano Arenal -- such as ziplines, hanging bridges, white water rafting, slow river floats or kayaking through wildlife sanctuaries. Public bus transport is available to nearby locations but not directly to us (the remainder of the journey being easily arranged from Aguas Zarcas by taxi). Public bus transport should be undertaken only by those experienced in public transport in Central America, preferably with backpacks and who speak Spanish. Private shuttles and private drivers are available, in addition to private rental car delivery to the guest's lodging and a special package for our guests, which includes a free cell phone for use in Costa Rica, discounted rates and a 100% guarantee that the quote will be complete and honest (no hidden fees). Day visitors and groups are permitted entrance to use the hot springs and cool springs pools from 9 am to 6 pm. There are usually more day visitors on weekends, especially Sundays, and we recommend booking week days for more tranquility and privacy. If guests book a longer reservation that includes a Sunday, we recommend planning a day tour in the many nearby activities on Sundays. Day visitors must leave by 6 pm, and only casita and Tree House guests may use the pools after 6 pm and enjoy unlimited access to the pools, with the exception of no nighttime use of the forest pools, and cleaning schedule as noted above. We recommend either ordering a catered dinner for your first evening and/or next morning breakfast, or buying and bringing groceries to cook because we are 4 km from the main paved road and driving after dark is highly discouraged until drivers have quite some experience on Costa Rican roads.

  • Bio Thermales is truly a special and beautiful place. The Colibri Casita was clean, well equipped, and comfortable. Our gracious hosts, Kathy and Bernie, were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed soaking and swimming in the hot springs and the close proximity to nature made our stay memorable. We will definitely return!

  • Casita3 was perfect for our family of 5 and our 3 children (ages 11, 8, and 3) loved the pools and hot springs! Kathy and Bernie are wonderful people too!

  • The setting of the resort is incredible and so much for kids to do and enjoy as well as adults. We were not prepared for all the pools and hot springs. We really enjoyed being there and wish we had booked for longer. The only thing we would have liked is a restaurant on the premises. That would have made it perfect. Thanks Kathy an Bernie.

  • We did not meet Kathie or Bernie but felt welcomed by the property manager. Our home was lovely, well-stocked and clean. The hot springs and pool allowed a nice way to wake up or relax after a fun hike up the mountain. There were two very comfortable rope/swing chairs on the balcony which was our favorite place to hang out.

  • Everything was really amazing! Making the reservation kathy was very helpfull and send a lot of information. When we arrived Johan was the best host we could ask for. The rooms were nice, tidy, clean and everything we needed was available. The hot springs are really amazing just like the whole area. Love to recommend this place and people!

  • Thanks to Kathy for all of the advance help in making transportation arrangements. Our stay was great! The pools and rainforest were better than expected. We soaked every morning and night before and after activities. Plan to do activities on week ends as the pools are very busy with local families on those days. We saw monkeys one morning during a soak and we saw 3 sloths during our stay. We cooked in the casita and ate on the balcony. It was a great family time.

  • Thank you Bernie and Kathy for a warm welcome and fantastic stay! Kathy's communication is fantastic and made great suggestions on how to make commute to Bio Thermales and how to rent a car. We are a family of six that slept perfectly in the Casita 3. Our children ranging from 14 to 2 are still talking about the slides and all the pool options. The adults (my parents and husband) enjoyed relaxing in the thermals. This is also an easy commute to LaFortuna where you can enjoy many activities.
