Alto Pass : réservés à l'instant

Built in 1856, this homestead is being given new life as a comfortable retreat house with gardens taking shape on the property. You can "get away" & still be close to unique villages, music venues, organic farms, local artists & wineries, nature & much more.
The Homestead Retreat has been my home for several years. I now live up the hill with my partner Paul & am happy to share my former home with travelers & retreatants. Our Center For Lost Arts up the hill offers yoga, day retreats, mindfulness & meditation sessions. We have another retreat cottage called Eva's Roost Retreat, that is also listed on Airbnb. Guests are welcome to let us know if they'd like to come up and stroll the trails around the pond, see what we're growing(Laughing Possum Farm) and/or tour the center(bulit by Paul). You're welcome to come to yoga if you're around in a Tuesday or Friday morning. We'd love to meet you! You will find the homestead to be a cozy and peaceful retreat. Weekend bookings must be two nights. If you plan to stay more than three nights, you are welcome to ask for a discount. A full week stay is discounted 30% and a month 50%. If you are on your way through and can only stay one night, I will consider your request if it's during the week or off-season. The regular rate per night is $114 on the weekend and $99 during the week. This rate may vary slightly depending on the season. Produce from our garden when it's available, access to cooking and art supplies & basic toiletries are included. What a deal! Those paying the full rate also get breakfast items. You will find a well-stocked kitchen for cooking any meal. Use basic food items that are in the cupboard and fridge. Take what you need. Leave what you don't. I buy as organically as possible as well as fair trade whenever possible. The fridge has some basic items, but you will need to purchase fresh goods at the local market or in town. The wood pantry has a variety of art supplies. You are welcome to use them at no extra cost. There is a guitar & percussion instruments, as well as CD's, books and board games in the bathroom closet. There are two bedrooms, but the main bedroom is where you will stay. It is spacious and has a beautiful view of the back yard and forest, moon and stars. The second bedroom is more like a storage room. Currently there is a futon available in there if needed. Please leave an extra $25 if you have an overnight guest or have a third person with you. The house and gardens are free of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides - any kids of "cides" - basically anything that can kill life. I prefer to keep it that way and hope that if you see a spider, you will use one of the "critter catchers" and take it outside. The house is clean, but sometimes bugs are looking for some creature comforts - if it's rainy or cold especially - I'm sure you can relate :)
The Homestead Retreat & Gardens is nestled into just over an acre of land within the boundaries of the Shawnee National Forest. Surrounded by rolling hills, forest, orchards, farms and vineyards, you will love the views! The house is located 5 minutes from the little town of Cobden, and you can easily access Giant City Park, Alto Pass(and Quetil Trail), Bald Knob(the highest point in Southern Illinois), Makanda, Anna, Carbondale and other surrounding sights, lakes or parks in 5 - 25 minutes - Holy Boulders, Little Grand Canyon, Trail of Tears, zip lining - just to name a few. My partner, Paul, owns Packrats Paradise Antique Mall in Cobden and I run a booth in there called The Homestead Collective - we carry locally made and grown items. Packrats is open everyday, except Monday, from 10am to 5pm. Also, I manage In Sync Mind Body Therapy Center in Carbondale. If you are wanting to book a massage during your stay, the center is only a 15 minute drive. Let me know and I'll book you an appointment.
  • I would definitely recommend Homestead Retreat & Gardens to anyone seeking a quiet, peaceful and relaxing getaway. Bonnie has created a a wonderful relaxing retreat in this old farm house set among the beautiful rolling hills of southernmost Illinois. She's thought of everything to make her guest feel comfortable. The house feels like a home with Bonnie's obvious personal touches throughout and is well stocked with essentials. From the minute you walk in you feel free to relax and enjoy yourself, worry free! Bonnie is warm and friendly and obviously embraces being your host. She makes herself available if you need anything or have questions. But allows you the privacy and personal space you came here for. Thanks Bonnie! I will be back.

  • If you are looking for quiet and beautiful surroundings - this is the place! It is located down in a valley- great for watching the sunset. The house is very comfortable and you will have pretty much everything you need - lots of organic and healthy food options. If it gets cool enough there is a wood burning stove or a fire pit outside. The house is very cozy and welcoming. This is a great place to rest and recharge. But if you want to get into town, it is not far away - you can go into cute little Cobden or drive into Carbondale. We are already planning our next trip back!

  • Bonnie was a fantastic host! I really appreciated that she called a few days before to make sure we had all the information we needed. The Homestead is very lovely and we truly enjoyed our weekend stay. THANK YOU!

  • Our third time staying at Bonnie's, so I think that says it all. If you are looking for a place to get "off the grid", enjoy nature, and spend a few days of peace and quiet, this is it. It's quaint and cozy. Your own little cottage outside of town, but if you need a bit of civilization, it's not far away. The perfect getaway for those who love nature and a slower pace.

  • This is a great place to unplug and relax. There is no TV, internet and cell service is poor. I used my time here for reflection and some long overdue reading. If you are of a mind to you are in the heart of Southern Illinois wine country and close to Shawnee National forest. I would recommend the Homestead Retreat and Gardens to anyone.

    Kenneth2017-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second time around staying at the Homestead Retreat. We wanted to see Shawnee National Forest in all its fall colors, so Bonnie's place seemed like the perfect choice. The location was great for all the parks we intended to visit. It makes a great "home base"....and it does feel like home. Comfortable, quiet and very cozy. The weather was absolutely perfect and allowed us to eat outside every morning on the porch and start our day peacefully surrounded by nature. If the temperatures had been a bit cooler, Bonnie had left directions on how to start a fire using the wood-burning stove inside. The kitchen has all the basics for cooking meals or making a hot cup of tea after a long day of hiking. Checking in at The Homestead was a breeze. We actually never saw Bonnie on this particular trip, but we could call or text her if we needed anything. We had all the necessary information and communication was never an issue. Prior to our arrival, we had some questions which Bonnie promptly answered. Upon request, she had left us an information guide and a few extra notes about things going on in the area during our stay. Our goal was to unwind and do whatever we were moved to do....and we did just that! Be aware...there is no wifi and the cell phone service can be spotty in this area. But that shouldn't be a problem if you come here to get "off the grid". If you need internet, go into town, the 4G works great there. As a side note, we made a trip to the Little Grand Canyon Trail based on a recommendation from a Park ranger we met during the last trip. This is a 2.5 hour/3.2 mile hike that is absolutely amazing and beautiful. I won’t say it was the easiest of hikes - there's a lot of climbing down and up again - but well worth the trip. This really was the perfect weekend to getaway from it all. We will definitely be staying here again, if Bonnie lets us! Truly this place is a home away from home. (And the hammock at the back of the property was a great addition - Thanks, Bonnie!)

    Lisa2016-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • Bonnie's cabin was exactly what we expected: relaxing, beautiful, and close to lots of fun places to hike and explore. She was friendly and helpful; she even picked us fresh vegetables from her garden!

Eva's Roost is a rustic, zen-style cottage that has been completely redone inside over the past year. There will be more stonework and landscaping done in the spring on the outside. Nestled in the hillside, overlooking the pond, the cottage gives a sense of oneness with nature including sleeping with the moon, waking to the ducks, watching the passing deer and listening to the birds. It's a perfect, private space for a retreat. Bonnie & Paul are partners and will be your hosts.
Enjoy your own place while having access to gardens, trails, pond and your hosts in the main house. Guests are welcome to help in the gardens or participate in yoga, meditation, retreats or other seasonal activities such as tapping maple trees, drying herbs, infusing oils, laying stone and more. The peaceful, natural setting is perfect for writers, artists, musicians and anyone needing some time out from their regular routine. The cottage has a woodstove, bathroom with shower, sitting area and double bed. A small kitchen(toaster oven, hotplate, kettle, coffeemaker, dishes & basic cooking supplies) doubles as a storm shelter if ever needed. Guests are welcome to use the large kitchen at the main house if they are wanting to use a large oven or gas stove. Electric heat is available for winter and air conditioner for summer. During the coldest part of winter(December/January) the heaters alone are not enough to keep the cabin toasty so the woodstove is a must. If you need assistance in learning to start and maintain a fire, Paul and I can show you how. Eventually their will be a screened in porch to sit out in the evenings by the pond. There is an outdoor fire pit with lawnchairs and 2 adirondack chairs facing the pond.
We are just up the hill from the Homestead Retreat & Gardens if you want to read more about the area on that listing.
  • This place is gorgeous! The workmanship that went into building the Roost is really astounding. We loved the windows, especially since the weather turned a bit too cold to be outside as much as we had pIanned. Bonnie and Paul were both so kind, as well as so willing to assist in any way we needed. We went out for a few hours one afternoon, and they made sure the fire in the wood-burning stove stayed alive. Thanks again, Bonnie, for a beautiful and restorative stay!

  • Bonnie is a great host. Communication before the trip was very clear and fast. The place is really clean and cozy. So many little trails to follow around the pond. Being outdoors and indoors was just lovely overall. I recommend this little jewel to anyone hoping for a quiet getaway <3

  • The pictures of this place do not do it justice. The cabin is absolutely gorgeous with all of the natural wood and stained glass windows. The decor perfectly captures the serenity of the surrounding area. There are wandering trails around the cabin so you can take a quick walk of walk around for an hour without ever being far from the cabin. Bonnie and Paul were amazing and made sure we had everything we needed (even gave us fresh picked zucchini from their garden) We can't wait to come back!

    Linda2017-09-04T00:00:00Z

  • Bonnie's place was literal heaven. She greeted me and was patient with my arrival time changing. Gave me a lovely tour and a hug! She's the friendliest. It was so welcome after my long drive. The space is out of this world and the property was just was I needed as a pit stop on my 12hr road trip. Highly highly recommend. This place is magick!

  • Wonderful home nestled in the woods. Lots of acreage to walk around. Pet friendly with plently of living space for you and your pet. Could see two families sharing the facility with the kids up in the loft. Enjoyed our three days there this last month.

  • This is our 3rd trip to the Shawnee Wine trail in as many years. This cabin was Gorgeous with very comfortable beds but it was not without issues. there was no firewood. In past years the cabins we rented always had firewood. At first we were told it stated on the listing no firewood. But it was not, then we were told it was in the house rules, which it was not. Then it was added to the listing after the fact . Trash cans outside were completely full upon check-in we had no place to throw away our trash. This is a problem since the house rules book which was NOT listed online states an extra up charge for garbage not thrown out properly. It even states if cans are full, take your trash with you! Really? And put it where? Our vehicle was packed full of cases of wine suit cases and 5 ladies. Also, absolutely no privacy. No window coverings in the bedroom off the kitchen or the entire kitchen side and front of the house. We had to tape paper towels to windows. Listing reads 2 bathrooms but renter beware, only 1 shower, 2 toilets and 1 separate tub which is a jacuzzi. Master bath had no door. Just a curtain; very very strange. If you require special wood in burning stove, at least offer to supply for an upcharge. If you do book this cabin, call Lonnie Hickman of Hickman and Sons Lumber at (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) . He will deliver 4 arms of wood for only $15. It was plenty of wood for two nights of campfires. We found Lonnie the 2nd day after called at least 5 gas station/stores. Finally, be aware, your dishes are washed by previous renters. It's stated in the rules book located in the cabin, which is very detailed and quite frankly ridiculous with added up charges for the slightest mishap of cleaning. I've never heard of a renter being required to run the dishwasher upon leaving. I was under the impression that is what the cleaning crew is responsible for. That rulebook, quite frankly, should be online and it is not!

  • This is a great property - it is easy to get to, but is basically completely secluded and private. The outdoor space is awesome, lots of seating and open field as well. Great fire pit. Kitchen is stocked and ready for use, propane grill is a great feature. Beds and baths are surprisingly upscale for such a secluded location. Highly recommend, especially if you book for a large group with the adjacent property.

  • The Barn was a perfect venue for our family reunion (10 adults and five children, four of whom are two and under). Each couple had their own bedroom (two of them with their own bathrooms) and we stayed in the loft room with our two oldest grandkids. The Barn has a large common area for meals and board games, a patio for lounging and a fire ring for making S'mores and talking into the evening. We were pleasantly surprised to find that there were toys and games there, as well. Our grandkids found the toy kitchen in the back room within a few minutes of arriving and enjoyed playing with it through the week. There was also a Pack 'N Play in one of the closets, though we had already brought two ourselves. We didn't have any cell phone service (a blessing!), though we could connect to the Internet via WiFi for messaging. There was a DISH receiver for the TV for the guys who needed to get their sports fix. Although The Barn is isolated, there are lots of places to go and things to do within a 10- to 30-minute drive (or an hour if you want to venture down to the Mississippi or Ohio Rivers). We reserved a pie, cream puffs and eclairs from Rule of Pie in Murphrysboro, which I highly recommend if you are in the area Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. By reserving online, we were able to ensure they were available and waiting for us to pick up on the way in Friday afternoon. We had a mix of meals prepared in the large, fully equipped kitchen, carried in from Murphrysboro (pizza from Martel's and BBQ from Pat's) or eaten out. Von Jakob Winery has sandwiches available and is only about 10 minutes away in Alto Pass. Driving in to Carbondale provides you with a wide range from local cafes to national chains. The children enjoyed the new Splash Park in Carbondale and the public beach on Cedar Lake and the drive time from The Barn was reasonable. We also had trips to the John Logan Museum in Murphrysboro for a presentation on the upcoming solar eclipse, Anthill Gallery, which is a small but nice craft store in Cobden, and the eclectic shops in Makanda, complete with an orange line painted across the street and into one of the shops that marks the path of the center line of the August eclipse. So, all in all, The Barn provided a clean, comfortable and well-equipped place to stay and was centrally located to avail ourselves of a wide range to activities that satisfied everyone from toddlers to adults for the week we were there. It is also a great spot for bird watching. A Louisiana Waterthrush showed up ever day along the creek, even coming right up onto the patio one morning when it was raining! In addition, Lisa and Josh were great hosts and provided lots of help before and during the stay.

  • The space is beautiful - very well appointed. Home away from home! Josh and Lisa were very responsive. We would defiitely recommend the Barn.

  • It's a beautiful, well-appointed home. The weather was nice, so we got to take advantage of the play area for the kids and the fire pit. There was plenty of common space for us all, or quiet places to get away. Checked out a couple of the wineries, which were very close, and the Natural Bridge scenic attraction, also very close. We really enjoyed our stay!

    Marvin2017-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great spacious cabin with an amazing kitchen and great furniture for large dinners with multiple people. Love the fire pit and outside eating areas

  • What a lovely place to stay. So much room and an overall comfy place to get away.

    Amy2017-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • @ The Barn was fantastic! The Barn itself was gorgeous and its location quiet and picturesque. A great place to relax and/or explore that is also child friendly. Close to multiple wineries (Pomona, Hickory Ridge, Von Jakob and more), great hiking trails (Giant City) and towns (Murphysboro, Carbondale). This is an Airbnb I highly recommend to others and I would definitely love to revisit in future.

    Miriam2017-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • Couldn't have asked for more. The Barn delivered as promised! We'll be back.
