“The only garden in the country which is FREE. It was donated to the Office of Public Works by Corona North who planted it and designed it on her own. Her husband had to use a hunting horn to call her in from the garden!”

“Mimosa is a chilled Tapas Bar where you can get homemade Tapas dishes and hand-picked wines in a relaxed, Mediterranean ambiance served by friendly, capable staff. At Mimosa you’ll find deliciously fresh Tapas dishes with a tasty selection of accompanying beverages. A hugely popular destination that does not take bookings - first come first served. They do have a very nice bar lounge to enjoy while you wait for your table. Highly recommeded.”

“Sha-Roe is quite simply a treasure of gastronomy, nestled in the picturesque village of Clonegal, Co. Carlow. The multi-award winning bistro continues to wow visitors with its simple and elegant approach to food. Henry Stone and his Swiss wife, Stephanie Barrillier met while working in Marlfield House in Gorey, where Henry’s reputation as head chef was a major draw. In 2002 Henry was awarded a 3 AA Rosette whilst working there. While looking for a venue for their new restaurant idea, the newly-married couple spotted the 18th Century house in Clonegal in January 2005. They spent the summer of that year renovating it into Sha-Roe Bistro, which opened in September. In 2007 they won The Georgina Campbell ‘Best Newcomer of the Year’. The award was based on the amazing food & wine experience, Stephanie’s front of house charm, as well as the immaculate setting of the beautifully restored restaurant.”

Point of Interest
“One very unmistakable monument dating back to pre-historical times is the great Brownshill Dolmen the east of Carlow town. Brownshill Dolmen has a granite capstone weighing over 100 tonnes, making it the largest of its kind in Europe. The massive capstone rests on two portal stones which flank a door stone and slopes downwards to the west where it rests on a low boulder. The magnificent capstone has excited the interest of many antiquarians and tourists down through the years and it is thought that religious rites, possibly even human sacrifice, were performed there for four and a half thousand years (2500 BC) Signposted, direct access at 5km from Carlow town on the R726 Hacketstown Road.”

“Widely respected as the jewel in Ireland’s gardening crown, Altamont Gardens are an enchanting blend of formal and informal gardens with riverside walks covering over 40 acres (16 hectares). Recognised as one of the most beautiful gardens of Ireland, the estate gains much of its character from the many mature trees, natives in the avenues and woodland areas, and exotic specimens throughout the gardens.”

“Delicious food and great service all-day, everyday. This is the closest place to us that serves the best food to suit all appetites. There is a bar and a restaurant, the food in both is excellent. We recommend booking a table for groups if it is a weekend, but you can eat at the bar with our a reservation. Just let us know if you want us to call them for you to book in advance.”
