Plaza
“Yeah it is designed to be touristy, but it has some really cool places like Heinolds First and Last Chance Saloon where the floor is still crooked from the 1906 earthquake. Do yourself a favor and go down and explore. Have a beer, watch the ferries come in.”

“For all things Oakland, Bay Area or California, but mostly Oakland, Oaklandish is the store for you. Forever immortalized on t-shirts, hoodies, hats, pins, socks, bandannas and of course skateboards, it's your choice what flavor or neighborhood of Oakland you want to represent. You'll find a healthy dose of local icons: the Port of Oakland cranes, the city's tree logo, Lake Merritt, the sugar skull. Other Bay Area hoods have a designated rack near a selection of Levi's and locally made goods to round out their selection. Our top pick: a toddler shirt melding the West Oakland BART rails with Fairyland’s iconic Jolly Trolly.”

Clothing Store
“Known mostly by local, this shop is a fresh find! The owner is more like a curator. She used to be a designer for Levi Strausse before opening her own place. An elegant, clean mix of new and gentle vintage & one of a kind pieces. While not overly trendy, her curation captures a relevant vein of Oakland style. The shop is a 10 minute walk from here on Grand Avenue just before Broadway. It also happens to be located just doors down from Farley's coffee house/magazine market (we suggest you try their marvelous mocha before popping into Own n Wood!)”

“This is a small, local venue that does a little bit of everything, from readings and local author Q & As to amazing jazz and jam sessions. The food is good. The drinks range from espresso to kumbucha to beer! The space is intimate.”

Jewelry Store
“It feels like a raw old converted workshop in this little gem of a store that sells work by the owner, Kate Ellen, and other jewelers from the Bay Area and around the country. You can get a hip, nontraditional engagement ring, and you can get $60 earrings. It’s in the charming Old Oakland neighborhood near several other boutiques with Bay Area products. Kate’s work uses textured metals and has a natural look. Giovanna Torrico makes classic modern earrings with vintage beads. And Maral Rapp makes necklaces and earrings in an Art Deco style.”

Galerie d'art
“Beautiful gallery owned by a woman of color; features art that reflects Oakland culture and is unafraid of confronting uncomfortable topics affecting modern day life in our growing community. Other events and lectures take place here as well.”
