“What better way to spend your time in the Poconos than hiking a few miles of the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail! Be sure to bring your hiking shoes as the trail is somewhat rocky. This section of the AT offers beautiful verdant views and glimpses of the Delaware River. We recommend fueling your walk with a bite to eat from the nearby Deer Head Inn.”

“Macon County has several access points to the Appalachian Trail. The most convenient is at Winding Stair Gap west of Franklin on Highway 64. It is very near Standing Indian Campground. Although it is possible to do shorter section hikes on the AT, many prefer to undertake the herculean journey from Georgia to Maine. Your stay here will permit only a small sampling of this iconic hiking trail. Sections of the AT in Macon County require acute exertion and is not recommended for inexperienced hikers. There are sections of moderate terrain which may be accessible for beginners. Please seek advice before undertaking your AT adventure.”

“Hike the sections of the Appalachian Trail near Roan Mountain: From Carver's Gap to Roan High Knob, the trail is 4.5 miles round trip and is a moderate hike through a mossy, fir-filled forest, with beautiful Roan Mountain views. From Carver's Gap to Grassy Ridge Bald, over grassy, wildflower-covered fields with exceptional 360-degree summit views at Round Bald, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge Bald; 4.7 miles round-trip and moderately difficult. From Roan Highlands to the Overmountain Shelter, a historic red barn at Yellow Mountain Gap; 11 miles round-trip and a difficult hike. All of the AT hikes are dog-friendly.”
