91,000 hectares of forest around Top Lake was affected by the Shovel Lake Fire of August 2018. While the initial impact seemed negative, spring of 2019 proved to be a very successful morel mushroom harvesting season. We saw very good re-growth of Fireweed flowers, wild roses, and other vegetation. Pine and spruce sapling have started growing and there seemed to be large increase in the number of deer, moose and bear in the area. This is a great time to witness the re-generation of a forest that was severely impacted by the pine beetle. The area should be absolutely beautiful next spring with the blooming of the wild flowers!
