  • Our second night here because we like to stay here! The inkeepers are very nice and friendly and helpfull and out stay was great. Thanks for everything!

  • We really liked the apartment. It is big and well located. The hosts left a detailed message for us that guide us and answers any question we may have. Thank you. We enjoyed our stay .

  • It's a beautiful condo in very quiet place. Crystal was busy, but made sure that we had everything we needed and didn't forget to provide us with some tips for restaurants and trips around.

    Eva2016-06-21T00:00:00Z
  • We didn't get to meet Crystal during our stay but she was very helpful during our conversations. The location was off the beaten path and we really enjoyed that. Also enjoyed meeting Lexie and Galvin. Great space with privacy.

  • This was my first experience with Air BNB and it set the standard of how quality lodging should occur. Crystal and Gavin have a beautiful private cottage with all the amenities all included which is usually charged extra. Mahalo to them for such a beautiful vacation.

    Waipi'o Hostel
Waipi'o Hostel is located in the quaint village of Kukuihaele, less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. In a place where horses and wild turkeys often wander by, this is the old Hawaiʻi. A place where neighbors are welcoming and life is sweet as the smell of sugar cane grass. You'll enjoy the wonderful ocean view and many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We enjoy the best weather on the island- not hot like Kona, not rainy like Hilo, not cold like Waimea… just perfect!! It’s also a central location for exploring the Hilo and Kona sides of the island. Just 10 minutes away is the lovely town of Honokaʻa, with farmers markets, antique shops, restaurants, and the coolest old movie theater in the world. Our three guest rooms are called "hostel style" but are really private rooms below the main home. The rooms are simple, yet nicely decorated, clean, with great beds. Guests share a bathroom, outdoor patio and living room with high speed Wi-Fi, couches, cable TV, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, and gas grill. We are a "green" facility which is cleaned and laundered with non-toxic cleaning products. Guests may also pick ripe fruit from the yard. We usually have all the fruit you can eat! (Tangerines, macadamia nuts, guava, avocados, bananas…) We also have a flock of hens with enough fresh eggs to share. Our guests tend to be excellent company, usually visiting from Europe, the US Mainland, Asia, Australia and beyond. The Waipʻo Hostel ʻAina Room is the coolest room in the house. It's windows allow the mountain breeze to flow through, but no direct sunlight. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: you can sometimes hear small footsteps from upstairs. If you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place. We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi’o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures. Many people use the hostel as a launching point for hiking trips. Join us!!

    Nicolas2016-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed 2 days at the Waipi'o Hostel and we enjoyed the quiet and peaceful surrounding. The room we booked "Aina" was in between two other rooms and quite dark as well as we could hear every step taken in the level above where Greg and his family lives as well as our room neighbours. The room, bathroom and lounge weren't really clean from our perspective. Anyway we really appreciated communication with Greg and their kids showing us around in the orchard. The bed is really big and comfy and the outdoor kitchen too!

    Mareike2016-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Easy and straight to the point, very nice place and good for meeting other people too.

    Frederic2016-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Greg was awesome and I love the view and set up in the back of the house. It was really relaxing and replenishing.

    Lee2016-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Greg's house/hostel was peaceful and relaxing. We really enjoyed the open air kitchen. Greg was friendly and helpful. He pointed us in the direction of a great beach that was quiet. The hostel is on the bottom floor, with the main house Greg and his family live in right above. There's no sound proofing, so you can hear muffled voices and footsteps/ the kids running from quite early. Wasn't an issue for us but would suggest ear plugs if you're planning a sleep in. We definitely recommend this as a great base to explore this side of the island, we wished we could have stayed longer. Thanks for having us!

  • Beautiful, immaculate, confortable unit. Very self-contained, no sign of host. Generous check-out time and lovely that they take care of cleanup!

  • Gorgeous home overlooking Waipio Valley, within walking distance of the overlook. Cynthia was a wonderful host. She even gave us a ride down into the Valley and showed us her Taro farm. We were very comfortable and would definitely come back again! Cookhouse farm to table restaurant is nearby and amazing too!

  • Where do I begin? Cynthia's place is just great. A hop away from Waipio Valley look out, but who needs to go there when you have a backyard as Cynthia's with the greatest view. We were welcomed by Cynthia's lovely mother and child. They were very, very nice and gave us excellent advice about what to do in the area. The house is beautiful and the room is very private and spacious. Five stars!!!

  • Fantastic view. The place was just as described. Great restaurants nearby and very close to Waipio Valley.

  • What a beautiful space! After a long week of traveling, Cynthia's private little apartment - within walking distance from Waipi'o Valley - was an oasis. The bed was super comfortable, and it was ideal to have a mini kitchen to store cold drinks/make hot coffee. Cynthia was always available for questions and had great recommendations for dinner in town -- can't beat live music and shrimp scampi at a little Italian restaurant just down the road. Highly recommend this little space. It was perfect for me; I hope I have a chance to make it back someday.

    Brittany2017-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • We could not have asked for a better location for our Big Island getaway. The view from the house is stunning and we enjoyed hiking down into Waipio Valley. We got in a little late and Cynthia was there to greet us and give recommendations on where to eat and what to do the next day. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there!

  • The best view I've ever woken up to! I love Waipio! The place was nice. Kitchen is tiny for 2 people preparing a meal, but has everything you need. The orchard was great along with its views! Ate mangoes everyday - yah! Even got fresh coconut and watched it being cut down! Loved the night music! Only little issue is the place gets a bit warm with the afternoon sun, but the view is worth it!

  • We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Hale Kukui orchard. The great pictures still don't do justice to the amazing views. The two-bedroom cottage was basic, but clean, and had everything we needed for our stay. Dan and Paula were friendly and greeted us each morning with a bag of freshly picked lychee (which was delicious). We more or less explored the entire Big Island and Honokaa was a great starting point. Also, if you're looking for places to eat nearby, Grandma's Kitchen in Honokaa had tasty food and an incredibly friendly staff.

    Tedd2015-06-14T00:00:00Z
  • Stunningly beautiful location with delicious fruit literally falling from trees just steps from the house. Accommodations in the two bedroom unit were very comfortable, with a well-stocked kitchen and amazing views from every room. We were greeted upon arrival and Paula and Dan tended to our questions and needs. Very convenient location just a short walk to the Waipio Valley overlook and trailhead - we hiked into the valley twice.

    Travis2015-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I had an awesome experience. Dan and Paula are great hosts. The scenery is beautiful here on the orchard. The fresh fruit was amazing. And the morning view from the balcony is just beautiful. Waking up to the view of the Waipio Valley every morning was energizing and awesome! The view literally inspires awe.

  • This was a beautiful location, wonderful accommodation and Paula was a fantastic host from start to finish. We loved staying here - the property was exactly as described, with breathtaking views and sitting out in the hot tub looking out over the coastline with a bottle of something sparkly, was one of the highlights of our wonderful honeymoon in Hawaii. We highly recommend staying here - excellent location too. Thanks so much...we hope to be back someday!

High on a bluff 600 ft above Waipio Bay. This Oceanfront home sits on the edge of the lush green cliffs adjacent to Waipio Valley , located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Offering unobstructed, truly breathtaking views of the ocean, coastal cliffs and valley waterfalls from the Ocean viewing deck, the spacious lanai, as well as from within the house itself. REVIEWS HERE: https://www.vrbo.com/996266#reviews
Custom built home for laid back family living. Lush grounds, organic fruit orchard, ample parking, beach-entry pool, magnificent kitchen - 2 dishwashers, 2 microwaves, 2 ovens, warming drawer - fit for the accomplished cook. Color abounds to reflect the natural hues of Hawaii. Many exotic woods and finishes, but truly designed for in and out living and a laid back lifestyle. Bring the kids, but understand there is a dangerous cliff. Pool is completely fenced, cliff is not. Lush surroundings, sexy pool with concealed rock slide and waterfall and views that never quit
Waipi`o Valley, the famous "Valley of the Kings", and the surrounding 23 miles of bluffs, waterfalls, black sand beaches and winding rivers, offer unlimited opportunities for hiking, picnicking or just relaxing in the valley. This location is truly an immersion in rural "old Hawaii", while only 15 minutes from the lovely town of Honoka'a, with its shops and restaurants; and less than an hour's drive from the towns of Waimea and Hilo, offering an even greater selection of fine shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities.
  • Quite simply one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life. The view from the house and grounds is spectacular. Property manager Pam is very accessible and helpful and it is easy to get around from the property as well. Highly recommended!

  • This was the most amazing property and location we have ever stayed in. Everything was perfect! Views were phenomenal, beach-pool was gorgeous and entertaining, the rooms were clean and fabulous, kitchen was clean and complete, we couldn't have asked for a better house to accommodate our big family! The one negative we can all agree on were the insects and bugs especially the coqui frogs and their obnoxious croaks, but you have to expect this sort of nature in a tropical area. If you're looking for a more civilized area, you'd have to go towards Kona which is about an hour and a half away. Other than that you are locked in a quiet and slow neighborhood within 30 miles away.

At the heart of Hawaii is a lush tropical paradise beyond compare. The Cliffhouse is a custom built cottage, overlooking the majestic Waipio Valley. Nestled into a bamboo forest, completely emersed in a garden of flowers. Includes fireplace & jacuzzi
Tucked away in a hidden paradise, we offer our charming cottage. Immersed in a plethora of plants, flowers, and amazing views, it is the perfect "get-away" spot. You'll find yourself situated on the cliffs above the majestic Waipio Bay. From the home, you have wide open views of the Kohala Cliffs, a 17 mile view up the coast to Pololu Point, and a 50 mile view across the sea to the Beautiful island of Maui. We are proud to be able to share a bit of "Old Hawai'i" with our beautiful hidden oasis. The home is private. There home is equipped with WIFI, a DVD plaver and a flat screen TV. There is a covered carport connected to the cottage, there are three covered long (very minimal incline) steps that lead from carport to the front porch. The home has a great big two person Jacuzzi tub with views of the Ocean and Maui. The cottage has a big yard and there are lovely garden areas with flowers, herbs and fruit trees. There is also a two person swing to enjoy. We offer complete privacy in this tropical paradise, but we can be found conveniently located only a short distance away whenever assistance is needed. The small historic village of Kukuihaele offers 2 art galleries and is the starting spot for over half a dozen great Tours. A short walk through the village brings you to Waipio Valley lookout, where you may choose a wonderful hiking experience down into the valley, or opt to take the shuttle tour down and get a wonderful guided narrative about the valley's amazing history. Waipio is home to an amazing mile long black sand beach, a double 1200ft waterfall, and one of the few places lucky enough to boast that still has herds of Wild horses. You may take a fun Horseback tour or Mule wagon tour in the valley as well.
The cottage is centrally located between Hilo and Kona. Conveniently located near ATV tours, Horsebacking, Ziplining, Hiking Tours, Helicopter tours and other fun activities. There are many great "must see" business in the area such as the "Hamakua Mushroom farm", producing amazing specialty Mushrooms, The Paul Mitchell's "Awapuhi" farm growing awaphui gingers for silky shampoo, or "Hawaii Vanilla Company" which just happens to be the only producing vanilla farm in the US. Our charming one street historic town of Honokaa is a must see as well, and is the gateway town to Waipio Valley. Don't forget to spend a day exploring the Valley!

  • Charming house with an outstanding view. In a lovely tropical garden. An amazing place to rest and enjoy waipu valley. The house is very nicely furnished and decorated in a shabby chic style.with many interesting books on hawaii Just be aware that this part of the island can be humid with mosquitoes

  • Absolutely hypnotic view from the coziness of the couch, the bed, the bathtub, anywhere, really. Kitchen is stocked with just about everything we needed. Our Host Kristan was very gracious, and directions were well laid out. A wonderful visit.

  • All I can say is WOW--- This place is truly amazing...a hidden gem. It is hard to put into words what makes it so great- you have to stay here to see what it's all about! The Hideaway was definitely our favorite stop on the Big Island- 2 nights here just wasn't enough! The house is close to town (Honoka'a) where you can buy groceries/visit shops and restaurants and is a very short drive (or walk) to Waipi'o Valley. We preferred to make our meals here as the view so beautiful and the house so comfortable you won't want to leave :)

  • Amazing place and amazing view, don't miss this!

  • When we arrived we were blown away by the view. Our to-do plans changed instantly. After visiting the farmers market in Honoka'a (10 mins away) we spent the day relaxing at the cottage. Counting boats, exploring the curated artifacts and decor of the cottage, reading parts of the books on the shelves and listening to a couple CD's all provided. Bring some grub and expect to not want to leave!

  • This was my 2nd time staying at the Cliffhouse Hideaway and I couldn't possibly feel more satisfied and honored to spend my last couple of days there. We get to see a lot of beautiful views while traveling around the islands, but this is one of the best! And you get to see it the second you wake up in the morning until the moment the sun sets. A perfect place to take in the essence of what Hawaii truly is, accompanied by a comfortable bed, a fully functioning kitchen, a jacuzzi tub, a napping nook upstairs, books, binoculars, friendly puppies..... this place has it all!

Experience the stay of a lifetime at Noelani of Waipi'o. Very few people get to stay in the majestic Waipiʻo Valley (in such comfort) and experience its magic, it's stunning beauty, and it's warm embrace. Long time Waipi'o residents have opened their home to travelers wanting to experience the land of their forefathers. Located on the beautiful grounds of this family property directly in front of the breathtaking Hiʻilawe Falls, Noelani of Waipiʻo is simple Hawaiian living at it's finest. This home offers two bedrooms - one with a queen bed and the other with a full size bed, a living room with a view of Hiʻilawe Falls equipped with 2 comfortable couches, a twin bed, phone and generator power - something not to be taken for granted in the middle of the valley. Water supply can sometimes be challenging in the valley but not to worry there is water on the premises and your comfort and enjoyable stay is our concern. There are board games, puzzles, cards and books for hours of old time entertainment. A fully equipped kitchenette and bathroom complete the upstairs rental. The old concrete stairs from the old family dwelling lead up to the new structure. This place is soaked in history and beauty. The house is surrounded by an amazing garden complete with taro,  watercress and warabi/pako (fern) patches, a large manicured yard, a koi pond, bananas and other fruit trees. There is an outdoor shower and bathroom, and a wood burning grill in the back yard (wood is available on site). There is also a gas grill and 2 butane stoves. There is no refrigerator but a large cooler is provided. Remember to pick up ice and food at Malama Market or one of the other stores in Honokaa before heading into the Valley. FYI, Noelani of Waipiʻo and the Valley in general, is completely off the grid. Do not expect modern development or infrastructure. Just a few steps up the road is the river flowing down from Hiʻilawe Falls with its cold, clear water. It's a refreshing spot to take a dip and cool off after a hike through the valley.
  • It's one of the best and beautiest places you can afford for such a nice and cheap price. So if you wanna hang out special and nice, in an awesome beauty place, you have to go there. Very great and nice

  • This place was amazing and the hosts were friendly. The sounds in the valley at night are just incredible. If you stay here consider spending time hiking on the Muliwai trail.

  • We loved it! My family and I felt so privileged to stay in such a special place. It was a really unique experience.

  • Micah the host is your super host. Easy going, like talking to a friend. I felt comfortable upon fist communications. The pictures used are in on point. What you see is what you get. There's is everything you need to make a salad on the premises! It has its own beautiful Eco farm right before your eyes. I could not believe that Hiilawe waterfalls would be your ultimate view!! If you want to forget about wifi, social media, and/or electronics..this house is for you!! The beds are Comfortable!

  • Noelani of Waipiʻo is a special place, perfect for the adventurous family! We were comfortable, enjoyed being off the grid, and loved 4WDing down into the valley for some seclusion and relaxation. We walked all around the area, spent a day at the beach with wild horses, laid in the yard and looked at the stars, and just enjoyed the feeling of this well-loved family home. Our hosts were warm and welcoming, and we loved every moment of the experience. Thank you!

    Shannon2017-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • How often do we wish we could just unplug for a few days? Forget the world and relax with simpler pleasures? Noelani's of Waipi'o allows for that without the hassle of sleeping bags or campfires. Reading an earlier review, I thought: Oh, so you can see the waterfalls from the property - probably have to go to the corner and halfway up a tree. But no! The twin waterfalls are visible from the living room couch. Standing on the front porch you can actually hear them! When you get into the rhythm of the sun and stars, the blue screens and electronic gadgets are missed less and less. This is a great property for a family (lots for inquisitive kids to do); sitting at the giant covered picnic table in the front, I kept wishing my extended family was with me. It's also a great place for friends to hang out (BBQ, ample outdoor seating, space inside to spread out, card and board games) or for a quiet romantic getaway. The grounds are immaculate. The fish pond has lovely fish. The watercress patch yielded lovely salad. The beach is a twenty minute walk away and the sand there is superb. Not coarse sand like other black sand beaches; this is fine dark sand - great for building castles. Be prepared to like nighttime noises like singing frogs and the occasional odd neigh of a horse. After a warm day at the beach, a cool water shower will feel good. If you need hot water to bathe in, you may be out of luck. Other guests were generous with their leave-it/share-it food supplies (oil, soy sauce, etc.), but bring plenty of you favorite things unless you want to drive/hike up that valley road. Don't let the steepness of the grade deter you from hiring a ride down or taking your own four-wheel drive. Be a very cautious and polite driver and everything should be fine. I've told friends and family about the good time we had and I know I'll be making another reservation here in the future.

    Brian2016-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • This was one of our favorite airbnb homes. Very exciting drive down/up the valley road. Once in the valley it is amazing at the beach with the horses and the black sand and cliffs. The waterfall is also very stunning to look at. House was comfortable and clean. Able to make big 1 pot meals (heat up frozen pasta meal bags) easily on the propane stove. Also bring coolers with ice and easy breakfast food (oatmeal, yogurt, cereal/milk, fruit, etc...) Water in shower and sinks had great pressure, used generator at night for playing games and cooking, hot showers, charging phones. Very peaceful and quiet at night. Beautiful grounds and scenery. Micah and his mother are very nice to talk to if you have any questions or problems come up, you can call them from the house. Enjoy!

Newly appointed space sitting at the edge of the 900-foot Waipio cliffside. The modern amenities include a large walk-in closet, four-post teak queen bed, 180 square foot private deck with peek-a-boo ocean views, walk-in shower, kitchenette with granite counters, toaster, coffeemaker, small TV, propane BBQ, small fridge, hot plate, housewares. The suite has two private entrances, and is very quiet. (Save for the nightly coqui frogs!)
The guest suite, or Ohana, is located on an acre of property covered in lush flora (much of which is edible!). The views from our cliff edge are one of a kind. The valley, sky, ocean, and Maui views are ever-changing. We are very into sustainability- the house runs on a fraction of the energy it generates via solar, and we often grow enough food that we have to share it. Being avid travelers ourselves, we are happy to share some local advice and tips with you to help make your visit as pleasant and fulfilling as possible.
We are technically in Kukuihaele, at the edge of Waipio Valley ("Valley of the Kings") The closest small town, Honoka'a (small fresh food grocer, movie theatre, emergency room, individually-owned restaurants and shops, etc) is 9 miles up the road, and the larger town of Waimea (small airport, hardware store, larger grocer and hospital) is a 30-minute drive. The larger towns of Hilo and Kona, each with international airports, are both approximately one hour away. For the most part the closest place to grab a bite is Honokaa. ("For the most part" because there are sometimes roadside food places open during the day closer to Waipio. Also, the Waipio Cookhouse is now open for lunch and dinner: Farm to table casual dining. Just 0.75 mi up the road. Try it out!) The neighborhood you are staying in is remarkably safe, Nonetheless, out of respect and concern for both your belongings and ours, please keep all doors and windows locked when you are not on the property
  • This place is magical! The view from the house is amazing and right on the edge of the waipio valley! The view point is only a 2 minute walk down the road and is amazing at sunset! Erik is a fantastic host who goes above and beyond for his guests! The space is quiet and clean and super comfortable with lots of space! It was relaxing to sit on the deck in the morning and in the evening while the sun set. The location is secluded yet close to the small town of honokaa, which has delicious shave ice and hot malasadas just down the road at Tex drive in! This is a beautiful place in a beautiful location with a fantastic host! Highly recommended !

  • This is a perfect, private retreat in the gorgeous Waipio Valley--a short walk from the lookout & trail. I fell asleep each night to the chirping of the coqui frogs, did yoga on the spacious deck each morning with both a peek-a-boo view of the ocean and a green field with tropical flowers. Erik's place is tasteful, beautifully maintained, super-clean, and very peaceful. Off-street parking, too.

    Janis2017-09-12T00:00:00Z

This home is filled with glass art, blown by the owner. The open floor plan and cathedral ceilings invite interaction and community, while two bedrooms and two baths offer privacy for couples or families. Lots of windows and sliding doors allow you to enjoy the spectacular 180° ocean view. Hiking, ATV tours, and horseback riding are within walking distance, and historic Honoka’a town is just a 10 minute drive. 487 steps will bring you to the overlook of the sacred Waipio Valley.
We chose the Hamakua Coast because it gets just enough rain to be lush and green and enjoys lots of sun and amazing views. We chose to be near the Waipio Valley because we love the local people and their affinity for the 'aina, or land. For us, it is important to have our Hawaiian experience be one that honors both people and nature, and we fell in love with the true aloha spirit not always found in more populated areas.
This is a local neighborhood, and by that, we mean that most of our neighbors were born on the island and live and work nearby. If they have a party, you can expect it will be over by 10:00pm, and you will be a welcome visitor if you and your guests honor that unspoken curfew.
  • The Glasshouse is a spectacular place to stay. We absolutely loved it. The location was perfect for us. It was amazing to hear the rooster in the morning, the tree frogs at night and enjoy the view of the ocean with horses grazing. It made us feel we were in a remote area while still being in a convenient location. We visited Volcano National Park and did a surfing lesson at Kona and being able to come back to this house after a busy day was just wonderful. We really enjoy cooking while on vacation and Marcie's kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need and larger grocery stores are just half an hour away. The Waipio Valley is tropical and spectacular. I have stayed a the Kona side previously and it is very arid. This side of the island is much more lush and beautiful and much less busy. We would love to come back and definitely recommend it.

  • We truly appreciated this opportunity to live in our dream home in our dream neighborhood on Big Island! Everything about the accommodations was perfect from the architecture , well appointed interiors to the perfectly stocked kitchen. A beautiful basket of fruit was there to meet us upon our arrival. We arrived early to drop our things before heading down into waipio valley and it wasn't too much of a problem . Hope to go back next year !

  • Belinda was professional and easy to work with, and everything was exactly as described - better even. This is a wonderful vacation home located alongside a soothing creek and a fruit-laden tropical forest (complete with a symphony of frogs each evening). It's quite spectacular, and the fit and finish is first rate; as are the appliances, furniture and provisions throughout. All you need is food (Malama Market in nearby Honokaa is great), everything else is provided. Enjoy this beautiful home and the beautiful Waipio valley just minutes away.

    Matthew2016-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Belinda was super easy to work with. The house is amazing, very secluded and private. It's a great place to get away!

  • This house is far away from everything, but walking distance from the Waipi'o Valley (Valleynof the Kings). Every detail of the house is beautiful, it is a pleasure to spend time in it. Surrounded by trees and a creek with frogs and birds, an all-around balcony in each floor, and a fully equipped kitchen. We loved staying in a bamboo house!

    Yolanda2017-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolutely lovely and unique place to stay. Very convenient to Waipi'o Valley and Honoka'a. Beds were comfortable; kitchen was great for cooking. Living room furniture only accommodates 4 but outdoor lanai furniture is comfy and great for enjoying the outdoors. Check-in was clear and easy. Sound of the nearby stream is refreshing. Host allowed a later check-out since no one was arriving the same day which was delightful. We were surprised by the beautiful flowers and generous fruit waiting for us! 5 Star!

This is an historic dance hall that has been renovated keeping its charm intact. It has big front rooms with high ceilings. The near two acres are alive with old mature fruit trees and a massive front yard to relax and enjoy the tropical setting.

    Elise2017-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • I loved Diana's spacious, converted dance hall home with its huge rooms and wooden floors. And Diana herself was a treat: a warm, generous, interesting lady who struck just the right balance of providing us with company and leaving us to ourselves. The coffee she grows and roasts on her farm was the best we had in all of Hawaii. My only minor complaint is that her house is a bit noisy at night, not because of music or traffic, but just because the old house is creaky and groany, and because the neighbour raises roosters that like to get up very early!

    Tannis2016-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • The glowing reviews that Diana and her place receives are spot on and completely justified. I would just like to add that she provided me with ear plugs for the roosters, which was much appreciated. I recommend staying at Enibus Farm.

    Garth2016-04-29T00:00:00Z
  • Diana is a force of nature, dynamic, warm, welcoming and a great cook. I'm delighted to have met her and her beautiful kitties. She was gracious in sharing her evenings and her friends with me.

    Moya2016-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • I loved the place, a very stylish house, quiet and fresh in the middle of nature, only a few minutes away from the fantastic scenery of the Waipio valley, perfect for walking and enjoying the Big Island's northern shores. Diana helped me with everything and prepared a delicious and fresh breakfast, thank you very much.

    Antoine2015-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • Diana is such a nice person! Her place is so good and cool. The house is beautiful, very well decorated. The farm is so amazing with avocados, mangoes, passionfruits, bananas, white pinneaples.... amazing. And she shares them with you!!! Best passionfruits and avocados I have ever tried!!! She was very accommodating and generous. I would def stay there again, and for much longer. I loved it. And so close to Waipio Valley!!!!

    juan2015-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • It was my first Airbnb experience and a very positive one, indeed. Diana was great; she is so sweet and welcoming! Even before my arrival she helped me booking a tour deep into Waipio Valley. Diana invited me to join dinner, we shared stories, and played games together until late at night. Her farm is fascinating with a lot of fruits I've never seen or heard of before and I'm grateful to get a taste of it. I also loved her cats, they were such cuties. If I ever get a chance to come back to Hawaii, I would choose Enibus Farm all over again.

The Waipʻo Hostel Kai Room is bright and airy with a comfortable king size bed. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: you can sometimes hear small footprints from upstairs. Join us!!

  • The room was very nice and comfortable. Greg was very prompt to answer my questions. When I arrived there was no one at his place, so I texted him to see which room I was staying at. It was an amazing experience to pick up oranges, guavas in the morning and have them for breakfast. The only problem was the line for the bathroom in the mornings. It would have been nice to see Greg during my visit but I couldn't.

Waipio Valley, five miles down the road, is rich with cultural heritage and was once the boyhood home of King Kamehameha, hence the nickname “Valley of the Kings.’ It contains the most picturesque black sand beach on the island, bordered by steep, lush valley walls, tropical vegetation, day and overnight hikes and numerous waterfalls to bathe in fresh stream water and cleanse the soul. Optional horseback or ATV tours available. Also in close proximity is the historic town of Honokaa with the local grocers, unique shops, cafes with local produce and the Art Deco Honoka'a People's Theater, (built in 1930 and still features movie screenings and occasional musical performances). -Akaka Falls -Botanical Gardens -Hapuna Beach

  • This place would be fine for two or three travelers who will be out all day and who don't do much cooking. It is a small ground floor apartment with low ceilings, and though it is attractive it is a bit dark. The bed was a bit saggy in the middle but had a foam (not memory foam) topper that made it barely acceptable. We had two real problems with this studio: there is not a comfortable place to sit indoors and read or write (no table except a tiny one with two stools in the kitchen), and the kitchen was not well equipped. The controls on the stove top were not working properly which made cooking difficult. We don't go out to restaurants much and we cook most of our meals so this did not work for us. We were unhappy enough that we did not complete our stay here.

  • Great location! Beautiful kitchen with everything we need! Communicative host and super easy!

    Sylvia2015-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed the time we spend at the serenity studio. The house is has shown on the pictures. Annick was very very easy to communicate and welcomming. The farm tour just 4 minutes away walking distance and it is a must to see real farming in action with very kind people. We recommend this place without hesitation.

  • Basement unit with low ceilings. Double bedroom and twin bedroom as listed, but no indoor area to sit. Outdoor seating and hammock was nice during day, too many mosquitos at night. An adequate place to stay if you have plenty of activities to keep you busy elsewhere during the day/evening.

    Joel2017-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • Annick was very responsive to all our questions and needs. The location of this place is amazing- very close to Waimea valley, 45 minute drive from Hilo. The place is quite serene and has agreat views. Annick was also very accomodative to our needs to include sleeping arrangements for an addtional 4th person, who got added pretty last minute to our trip. There is a care taker who came in the morning asking us if all was ok. Overall a great experience and I would definately recommend this place to any one planning to be close to Waimea Valley to in the north east corner of the island.

  • My family and I - my husband, myself and a 1 and 2-year old - stayed at the Serenity Studio for 2 nights. Annick was very responsive prior to our booking and checked in on us again when we left. Brian, the on-site caretaker was very responsive when we had questions. Alex, from the nearby farm, was there when we arrived with a complimentary fruit and veggie basket. Brian let us know that the toilet was "singing" and needed repair and that the door lock was tricky. Brian and Alex were wheeling the fridge into our unit when we arrived. The singing toilet was more of a loud wail and the tricky lock included bars to jam into the sliding glass doors in the kitchen and second bedroom. The serenity studio itself was very basic and not exactly living up to it's name. It was immediately situated off a busy road, the floors were quite dusty (very dirty feet after about 10 minutes), ants were in the entire unit - even the bed itself. The ants made the kitchen quite unusable since they were all over the counters. We kept all food (even chips, bread, etc.) as well as all food trash in the fridge. Brian offered to get poison from the farm but we figured we could live with it. Just a bit inconvenient. The location was quite loud during the day from the street noise, so we took off up north and explored the areas nearby as well. The guest (we think it was a guest), in the other apartment strolled in at 1am one morning...and it was a bit startling to have the headlamps light up the room, but other than that, we did not see the other guests. The outdoor area was pretty minimal and the views and lanai for "relaxing" were really too noisy to enjoy, and not very true to the description. They did exist though. The farm was described as a 5 minute walk, but was off the busy road (45 MPH and up) and Alex did not recommend we walk. He did offer the farm tour and meals for purchase. We absolutely would have taken him up on those things had the studio been a place we wanted to hangout, but it was not. Overall I would consider this place "glamping" at best as the place seems quite run down on the inside. The kitchen does look newer. That would be fine if that was what we were looking for, but we were looking for more of a relaxing, welcoming experience as was described. If you ARE looking for glamping... place would be good and close to cute Honoka'a. Annick, Brian and Alex seem like nice people.

  • Staying at Brian's ranch was awesome! We loved walking on the grounds feeding the horses and watching the riding. With the windows open it stayed wonderfully cool which was great for sleeping. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, we would stay here again in a heartbeat.

  • Wonderful place to stay.. super comfy, clean and yes, a view of horses from the living room. Cool temps made for pleasant sleep. You will love the Bridle Suite at Rocking Chair Ranch!

  • This stay met and exceeded our expectations. Though we didn't get to actually meet up with Brian, we had a couple great conversations with and about him when we made new friends on the ranch who knew him well and kept their horse there. It was wonderful enjoying the sights and sounds (even smells...but the pleasant kinds) of a working ranch. Accordingly, things can get going early in the morning but I would think anyone considering this listing would expect and welcome that as we did. A really unique and open setting within driving distance to shops, restaurants, and activities.

  • I had a pleasant stay by Brian's ranch. Everything was perfect : the room, the kitchen, the bathroom and the cleanness. I recommend this BnB for who wants to have a special experience in a ranch near nature and horses. Unfortunately, I didn't meet my hosts.

  • My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to spend two nights at the Bridle Suite in October. Brian was quick with a response and available for any questions we had--directions were clear and the apartment was true to the description. The location itself is awesome--the ranch is absolutely gorgeous and it's an easy/quick drive into Waimea (which has some of the best restaurants on the island). We loved being able to stay on a working ranch--for us, it made the trip--and we wished we could have styae longer. Would definitely recommend.

  • My wife grew up riding horses and barrel racing so when we arrived and got out of the car she was giddy with excitement as the sights, sounds, and smells took her right back to her childhood. It was a wonderfully unique location to stay at. It's close to Waimea, which is a great little town to explore. Brian was very helpful and available if needed. All of the ranch staff were very nice when we saw them doing chores in the mornings and evenings. The space was well furnished and as described in the listing. It was fun to see the horses, and folks practicing roping and riding from the apartment. This would be our first choice if or when we return to the Big Island.

  • I booked Jacqueline day-of and she was gracious enough to accept despite the short notice. I was taking my Mom on a tour of the Big Island and knew she would appreciate the clean, professional, and intentional experience of a solid BnB ( I have been guilty of subjected her to jungle shacks in Puna before) and Jacquelines place seemed to fit the bill. Upon arriving, we were not disappointed. Jacqueline was quick to offer us refreshments and after a quick get-to-know-you was very respectful of our space and making us feel at home. Her place is mere minutes from Waipio Valley, but having explored the valley at lengths, I was quite content lounging on Jacqueline's enormous lanai under the Hamakua sun. The next day, Jacqueline treated us to breakfast, accommodating my obscure dietary preferences, and encouraging me at every bite as I devoured 10+ gluten free muffins (made with fine grade matcha powder and bananas as well!). I'm the type of guy that will go camp in Waimanu for a weekend, so experiencing the type of luxury Jacqueline exhibits was quite the treat! Aloha Jacqueline, hope to stay in touch! :)

  • When we arrived at the old Plantation Managers house after 24 hrs of travel, we thought we had died and gone to heaven. It is a charming historic house with well established gardens. Plant lovers can ogle at magnificent specimens, some planted more than 70 years ago. The house is brimming with character and is furnished tastefully with many antiques . Jacqueline has created a very comfortable and welcoming environment. There is an outdoor patio with views of the garden and sea, complete with hammocks and loungers, where you can relax and enjoy a cup of tea. She is herself widely travelled so knows exactly what a traveller needs for comfort and convenience. There are many wonderful sights to be seen near by and we deeply regretted that we had not booked a longer stay. If you appreciate quality at reasonable prices, do yourself a favour and stay here.

Cute and cozy cedar cabin all to yourself. Celebrating Waimea's paniolo history and lifestyle, the cabin is decorated paniolo (cowboy) style. Enjoy privacy surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation. Breath in the tropical white ginger and night blooming jasmine scents that waft in through the windows with the cool mountain air. Completely self contained with comfortable furniture, new bed and well-stocked kitchen. The feeling of old Waimea surrounds you in this well-appointed cedar cabin.
This paniolo cabin is located in a friendly residential neighborhood. I live on the property, but the cabin is completely separate from my home and is very private.
This unique log cabin is tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood. Easy access to beaches, Waimea town, Kona or Hilo - come home to cool and green Waimea. Beach chairs and beach towels for your stay. I've lived in Hawaii my whole life and am happy to recommend the best places to see, things to do and places to eat! From hot, sunny beaches to tropical rain forests, an active volcano and world class telescopes atop Mauna Kea - Hawaii Island has it all. (If you are heading up to Volcano during your Big Island visit - please check out my other Airbnb listing - Crater Heights, within walking distance to the National Park) Waimea is nestled between Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains and sits at about 2800 ft elevation. So it can get chilly at night - it's always good to have a light jacket in the car. As you may have heard, public transportation is limited on the Big Island. I highly recommend having your own car while you are here. It is the best way to experience our beautiful island. Your kitchen is well stocked with essentials for your stay. I provide coffee, tea and seasonal fruit for your first day.
  • Katherine's place is super cozy and cute. We arrived at hers after coming from the summit of Mauna Kea and it was the perfect place to be. It's warm and homey. One can tell that Katherine put a lot of thoughts into the decor :D She even provided us some fruits and drinks in the cottage. The location of the cottage is central and give you easy access to the coast in the west, the mountain on the south and the canyon on the north!

  • We decided to treat ourselves to Katherine's cabin on our last night on the Big Island and I am so glad we did! The cabin was absolutely beautiful and you could tell the host put a lot of thought into it. It was very spacious for a studio. It really did feel like a one bedroom with the layout of it. You also had your own outdoor sitting area, which we used in the evening to stargaze and sip on wine. We loved the cabin so much that we looked into changing our plane tickets so we could stay another night. The area the cabin is located in is very beautiful and scenic. Wish we could have spent more time in the country side. When visiting, make sure to check out the Big Island Brewhaus, which is less than a 10 min drive from the cabin! We will definitely be returning!

  • This place was FANTASTIC!! Location was off the beaten path in a good way and near a small town, highly recommend The Landing for some pizza and cheesy bread. Views were fantastic and the soaking tub at sunset and stars was was a wonderful experience. The kitchen was just renovated and having a cooking space and fridge was perfect for our three day stay. Don't think twice about this place just book it!

  • Ok first of all that view !!! Absolutely amazing. So nice to enjoy the soaking tub in the morning on the lanai and some coffee listening to the birds. If you wish to be away from it all, this is the place. Really feels like you're in the jungle. For people looking for a more luxury place I don't think this place will suit you though. Second, Paula and Dan, thank you so much you guys are what makes this place so nice as well. Hale Kukui is a very special « retreat ». Gotta love driving though if you wish to visit the island, but with roads and views like these it's impossible not to.

    Héloïse2017-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I spent a fews days of our honeymoon in one of the cottages at the orchard. It was clean and spacious, and the view from the Lani was breathtaking. The hosts were friendly and they had done a nice job making the cottage welcoming and well-stocked. Something not much emphasized in the listing is how close the property is to the Waipio Valley; one of the most celebrated tourist attractions on the island - one can get from the cottage to the overlook in about 2 min. and down to the beach in about 15 min. (with a Jeep!) As the crow flies this is less than a mile away, but one has to drop 1000 vert. feet, so it's a rough passage. Andy, the host of the listing is the owner, but you will have no contact with him, as he lives off island, the caretakers Paula and Dan (lucky dogs) are friendly and helpful. The views from the deck ARE spectacular, but the first 3 images shown in the listing were NOT taken from the property so don't expect any beach views. The 'jungle' sounds are awesome, and we made recordings of them on our cell phones the minute we arrived, but judging by the complimentary earplugs (very nice touch) there may be some who find tree frog and gecko mating calls to be a bit much when they emanate from only 10' feet above your bed. The opportunity to stay on an orchard in the hinder lands of the big islands is both beautiful and unique and we were charmed by the experience. But this ain't the Sheraton; this property is isolated, and quiet, but far from shops, commerce, and restaurants. If there is a good rain on this side of the island during your stay, the waterfalls will be awesome, but expect to run the dehumidifier, or 'the damp' will find your every sock and towel. Lisa and I had the good fortune to be at the orchard when there were no other guests in the other units, and this was very nice; plenty of parking, very private and we saw more chickens and geckos than people. If you like this sort of holiday, where isolation and nature trumps access to restaurants and fancy shops, this may be the right place for you.

    Trip2016-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just amazing, so happy we found it! We were just in awe of the view down towards Waipio, and black sand beach. It had just rained the day we checked in, so we were able to see a few waterfalls from the lanai. Easy walk or short drive to Waipio Valley, and only 30 minutes to Waimea. Paula and Dan were all smiles upon check in, offering advice on places to go, and even delivering fresh fruits from the orchard that is on site. Place was clean, had all the amenities, and was as described. Will find any excuse to come back one day!

    Collum2017-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • The place was lovely. Clean, and exactly as it looked in the pictures. It was quiet and serene- a perfect writing escape, for example. However it was very rainy/cloudy/foggy- nothing to be done about that but many locals informed us its always like that, so it's good to know. The black sand beach was a bit further than we anticipated. There's not a ton to do close but relax and hang out besides the Waipo Valley, though the orchard is pretty cool. We were on a relaxing/honeymoon-esque trip, and we ended up leaving early because it was just too rainy for our liking- we went back to the western coast of the big island and were happier with the sun and swim-able beaches. Also the wifi isn't the most reliable- I had some things I needed to do online and we ended up having to go elsewhere to get a nice strong wifi signal-- we didn't ask the hosts to fix it, but they had already let us know that the vision of Hale KuKui is more of a retreat where you turn your gadgets off- we wished we had a heads-up about the wifi. Because we left early, there was quite a bit of confusion about how to pay some leftover fees we had online, but it eventually it worked out, and I learned they also have a website--- (URL HIDDEN) Overall, great, just not the sunny retreat we were hoping for----but maybe a phenomenal writing retreat (if you don't need wifi!)

We live in the forest and occasionally will come across the mysterious pueo (owl), this peaceful place is called, Ka Hale Pueo (The House of the Owl). On a clear night you can light up the fire pit and stargaze! Inside you will find a cozy and colorful country decor with most of the necessities you need. E komo mai! (Welcome!)
Ka Hale Pueo is located on a 5 acre estate with a secured entry gate. Your private one bedroom guest house has a private car port for your use. The cozy living room is equip with jealousies to keep your guest house cool throughout the day. It also has a room heater for those few chilly nights we have in Hawaii. Enjoy a bowl of popcorn while watching your favorite TV show or relax and unwind from your day. The spacious main bedroom comes with a comfortable queen-size bed. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to prepare your favorite meals. The main house, where I am, is adjacent to your private guest house. We have enough space and distance between one other that grant you your own privacy, yet I am not too far should you need any assistance throughout your stay.
Ahualoa is mostly 5 acre farm lots with surrounding horses and animals. The historical town of Honoka'a is located only 10 minutes away. There you will find restaurants, shopping, a grocery store, movie theatre, laundry mat and farmer's markets.

1300 sq/ft 1 bed house with en suite bathroom. A quite peaceful retreat to rejuvenate in nature, away from city, yet only 10 mins to Historic Honokaa town. The house is central north so you can go to Waipio valley 20 mins and to Kona or Hilo either side of the island. Plus it's on the famous Old Mamalahoa road which Lance Armstrong wrote that "It's his top 5 roads to bike on in the world"! Experience nature and Hawaii bamboo and forest! One of a kind place and custom built house!
The space is very special it has antique mid century cabinets and the house is furnished with many asian antiques even the entrance is a large buddha for good energy! You will have the best sleep as the temperature is cooler at night and you get to hear the wild birds and animals at night!
My place is so quiet in the forest yet only 10 mins to town where all the restaurants and shop are. Please check out my Shave Ice shop and my CreaProducts studio that was on Shark Tank Season 7 episode 27!
  • Everything was as I desired before arriving. All else were great bonuses to my stay. Mai was wonderful to pick me up from another location and take me to her home where I was greeted by her amazing companion, Luna! The house was so peaceful and cool, just like their owners. I felt at home : ) Great fun cooking and sharing stories. And I am happy to say I was her first guest!!! Thank you for everything Mai.

  • What a beautiful secluded location. Quiet and peaceful, truly magical spot!

  • Mai provided a beautiful, calm and clean place to stay while we explored the island. We were able to easily spend our days at Hapuna Beach, Makalawena Beach, Kona, Waimea, Honakaa, and Waipio Valley during our stay. The kitchen was fully equipped which allowed us to easily prepare our meals at home. We would highly recommend stay at the Zen House if you're interested in a calm space to relax between adventures.

  • The house was very special, exactly what I needed. So peaceful and quite I had the best sleep in a long time. Bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed sitting in the courtyard with the bamboo, which I never experienced before. Wifi was great and first time enjoying a 4K tv, very luxurious. Great price and it was very convenient to go explore north side of the island. Honokaa town is very neat. Mai was very fast at replying and gave me free ice cream with my shave ice when It stopped at her Shave Ice on the way to waipio valley a must see.

  • Mai's communication is fantastic. Very responsive and ready to help in any way she can. The private bungalow was perfect for what I needed, out of the way and quiet but only 10 minutes from town. This space provided an authentic local Hawaiian experience, nothing fancy but cozy and comfortable at a great price. For those looking for the same thing I would highly recommend booking with Mai. Deep appreciation for the tremendous hospitality.

  • This is an interesting and comfortable house in a remote area, with a friendly dog always there to greet you. Nice and large room with a comfortable bed and en-suite bathroom with a towel heater. Only saw the host once, she was friendly and upbeat, we didn't cross paths again in the 3 nights I was there.

    Stephanie2017-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place to relax and soak up nature. Good central location - we used it as a home base to explore in Honokaa, Waimea, and Kohala. Mai is very friendly and had excellent communication and good tips on where to go. We would definitely stay here again.

    Sivan2017-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Mai has a nice house, but it is in a RAIN forest! It rained most of the time we were there and the house has NO HEAT. It was 60* with 80% humidity-very uncomfortable! When we called to ask her about heat she said there is NONE and hung up. We were asked to let Luna the Doberman in at night, but she scratched and whined during the day to be let in so we relented. Nice dog, but she needs to be bathed! House reeks of wet dog and is musty. Our room was clean enough (but COLD!) but the rest of the house is lacking maintenance-spiderwebs abound! Christmas tree was still up in late January....We came to hike Waipio Valley and frankly the 3 day minimum is too much time for this area...A small space heater could have made our stay much better!

  • Small and cozy. Bill was very responsive to my calls. Great location to Waipio Valley if you are doing the tours

    julie2016-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • We didn't meet Bill but everything was easy and simple and welcoming. No problems, and the apartment has everything you need. Very quiet at night when the traffic is gone.

  • I enjoyed staying here. It's close to the valley and just what I needed for an overnight. It's big but rustic (I say that not as a knock but as an FYI as my wife, who wasn't along with me on the trip, doesn't normally do rustic). It had everything I needed and was clean and well kept. Easy check in/out process and super friendly owners. Would stay here again (just not with my wife who requires some more pampering).

    andy2017-04-09T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks for everything! The place was much bigger than expected and in a nice location.

    Kyle2017-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • The Ohana that Bill provides is exactly as described. It is located at the back of the Waipio art gallery building. The cozy place is strategically located for those wishing to explore the Waipio Valley and Hamakua coast. I only add that this would not be an ideal place if you are allergic to mold. I don't mind not having any air conditioning because the surrounding air is wonderful. My criticism stems from the use of carpeting which has the propensity to become moist and harbor mold. Otherwise I feel that this place is a good bargin and it offers good amounts of privacy.

    Patrick2015-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • the place itself was fine for budget accommodation - well the place we were eventually directed to after getting kicked out of the accommodation that bill had provided us directions to. turns out we were mistakenly given incorrect instructions which sent us. to bill this was just a small mistake but it made things very awkward and embarrassing - having a large family on your doorstep looking at you like youre a criminal because youre in THEIR house. hopefully he never puts another guest through this.

Rainbow Bee is located on our formerly active, 5 acre honey bee farm with lots of fruit trees - cozy and serene with an earthy elegance that you will love. It has two glass sliding doors that open onto a large deck & overlooks a lily pond.
The cottage has one spacious bedroom with sitting area, a country style kitchen area, a dining room and a bathroom. The bedroom itself is about 300 sq ft with a queen size bed, a pull rattan couch & chair and a TV & DVD player to enjoy a movie after a day of exploring. There is also wireless internet in the room. Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage is converted from the tour/education building of our once active honey farm where for the past 20 years we produced a world famous gourmet honey - Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey. (We recently retired from and sold the honey business.)
Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage is located in Ahualoa, a bucolic country, farming and artisan community. Nearby community includes an award winning goat cheese farm, an estate grown coffee farm that produces the best coffee we have ever tasted, an organic green tea farm, an alpaca farm and an internationally know pottery studio and a blown glass artist studio. With advance notice, we can arrange for you tours of any of these farms and studios. You will love the adorable alpacas or goats, the unmatched aroma of Hamakua coffee and the exquisite landscaping at the coffee farm. Or may be you will enjoy learning the ins and outs of a Japanese tea ceremony. Let us know in advance and we will do our best to arrange for you a memorable experience at one or more of these special artisan farms. We are just three miles from Honokaa, a quaint historic town on the North East side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Honokaa main street shops offer a large variety of creations by local artists and artisans. Several cafe/restaurants in Honokaa serves delicious healthy food made from fresh local ingredients. Ahualoa is a great destination to explore the hidden gems of Hamakua Coast. Honokaa is 12 miles from beautiful Waipio Valley Lookout, the most visited place on Big Island, second only to Volcano. You can walk down the Waipio Valley or drive down if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. (Be prepared to do a vigorous hike up if you walk down the valley.) Down in the valley you will see a black sand beach with a stream flowing across the beach out to the ocean. There are often wild horse roaming around in the valley. Waipio is also a great surfing spot. You can also hike to a waterfall from the beach. There are plenty of options to tour in and above this beautiful valley - a mule drawn wagon tour, horseback riding tour or ATV tour for those looking for more adventure. For the energetic visitors, you can also hike down into the valley which is not difficult. The challenge is coming back up from the bottom. A scenic drive down the Hamakua Coast gives you views of beautiful waterfalls and coastline. Historic Hilo town is 43 miles down the Hamakua Coast. Hilo is a beautiful old town that still has centuries old wooden storefronts – many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. A stroll down the Hilo's Banyen Drive is not to be missed. This majestic, banyan tree-lined street at the shoreline of Hilo Bay is known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard & Pat Nixon, Amelia Earhart, and many other important individuals, including religious leaders and politicians both from Hawaii and around the world. These trees have withstood several tsunamis and spread their broad canopies near the edge of the shoreline. It is a pleasant walk under the shade and incredible beauty of these trees and view of the ocean. your stroll can continue into classic example of an authentic Japanese garden that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors. About 26 miles in the other direction (northwest) towards Kona is Hapuna Beach, one of the most beautiful and accessible beaches on the island.
  • Candice & Richard are great hosts in being very responsive and helpful. For instance, due to limited number of restaurants open on 31st Dec, they suggested to arrive one later. Then, they also made a reservation for dinner on the 1st Jan being worried about the still limited number of open restaurants . The location is great for exploring the Northeast of Big Island, and not too far from the cute village of Honokaa.

  • The Rainbow Bee Farm cottage was as promised. It's a large space that was formerly used for education about beekeeping. It was clean, spacious and quiet. Candice was a great host, very helpful. The house is about ten minutes mauka (uphill) from Honoka'a town, and about 20 minutes from the Waipio Valley overlook.

    Larry2015-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • This place is wonderful, we stayed after walking the Waimanu Valley hike as its proximity is excellent. It's super comfortable, your hosts are incredibly considerate, (there are even heated towel racks in the bathroom, warming your towels and helping them dry quickly, for after your shower). The accommodation is on an old honey farm, worth visiting, close to a little village where we picked up food that evening (it has a well equppied kitchen for food preparation, we were merely too knackered post the strenuous hike to do too much). Highly recommended, off the beat and track, for the traveller who has more interest in quality adventure away from tourist flooded generic spaces.

    jo2013-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • Candice and Richard were great hosts. They met us the day we arrived to show us where our room was. The bee farm is a very serene place--a nice way to break up the rest of our stay on the Big Island. After driving a winding back road and pulling into their driveway you truly feel away from it all. Candice and Richard were very interesting folks and we wished we could have spoken with them more! But, we were busy exploring the area. The town of Honoka'a is cute and has a couple good places to eat. And it's close to Waipi'o Valley. Overall a great find.

  • The posting - and accompanying pictures - did not begin to do the Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage justice. The lodging was exceptionally clean, the layout was superb, and the interior - including built in skylights, multiple fireplaces, complete kitchen amenities, and comfortable bedroom accommodations - was excellent. As an unexpected boon, the property was amazing, providing a completely tranquil rural setting that was difficult to leave behind. As for the hosts, Richard and Candice were both exceedingly nice, prompt, and did everything they could to ensure a positive stay while still respecting privacy at all times.

    Dustin2016-12-07T00:00:00Z
  • Both Candace and Richard were home to greet us when we arrived - they immediately made us feel so at home, taking the unhurried time to share all of the details of the space . Their warmth extends through to the thoughtful space that they provide.

    Nora2014-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Candice and Richard were such wonderful and kind hosts! My boyfriend and I stayed at the Rainbow Bee Farm on our first night vacationing on Big Island. Even before arriving, Candice made sure to send us detailed directions and inside information on the area that she geared to our interests. She also helped us set up farm tours in the local community, which made our visit more unique and memorable. We found the Bee Farm Cottage to be an extremely peaceful place with many thoughtful touches (the towel warmer was especially nice!). For us, this former working barn was a great retreat off the beaten path that helped us recharge. The location is in a wonderful rural area with a small pond right off the porch connected to the bedroom that we enjoyed listening to the wildlife lull us to sleep. The cottage still retains many interesting features from its days making and educating people about honey. We enjoyed checking out the demo bee hive (empty of course) and spent the night reading the many interesting books about beekeeping. We opted to do the "bee talk" with Richard. We thoroughly enjoyed speaking with Richard about the bee farm, his passion is clear and very infectious. We learned many great things about bee keeping, the honey business, and enjoyed talking to him about his many thoughts on life. We even got to taste many of the very delicious local honeys as well as some wonderful homemade guacamole that Candace made! Our stay at the bee farm was wonderful and Candace and Richard's warmth and generosity was a highlight of our vacation. We wouldn't hesitate one minute to stay here again and hope to come back some day. We also stayed at their retreat in Volcano which was equally wonderful and Richard and Candace's warmth and hospitality followed with us to the Volcano retreat as well.

    Emily2015-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very rural, peaceful place to stay. I always say that I want to see how the locals live, not the tourists, and this gave me that experience. Although the location is off the beaten path, it is central to many great sightseeing areas. If you want to stay one place and see the whole island, this might be the place for you. Richard and Candice a great hosts! The views are amazing. We will be coming back again.

  • Quiet and secluded location. A beautiful house with garden, a friendly cat, 3 dogs and goats. The room is very comfortable and quiet. Ann was a wonderful host and we would come back on our next vacation. Thanks Ann.

  • Off the grid ? We would not have realise ... Everything you could need or ask for is there, it is like she knew exactly what we where looking for ...Ann made this place better than most Hotel room that you would spend 200$ + per night. The very friendly pets just wait to be spoiled by visitors and it made it even harder for us to leave this place we so called home for a few days... Ann is a wonderful person and you feel it from the first minute you spend with her! If you don't mind driving a bit, you could possibly visit the whole island while stayin at Ann's place ... Do not hesitate, it is 10 times better than what you see on pictures !!!

  • Ann is an amazing host! Very kind, generous, friendly, funny, and full of beautiful energy! She made sure that we had everything we needed! She lives on a beautiful land in an eco-friendly home, near all the main attractions in the north of big island. If you love animals you'll be happy, since Ann has three dogs, four coats and a cat :-) We has a very good time at Ann's place! Thank you again for everything! Natalia and Erik

  • Wow, I almost don't want to write a review because we'd love to keep Ann's beautiful place to ourselves. By far one of the best Air B&B experiences - beautiful quite setting, gracious host, modern room. Private studio room with bath, small fridge and coffee maker, and separate entrance and patio. You wouldn't even know the home is off the grid - has all the amenities. It was an incredibly relaxing stay and Ann made us feel like family (even made us a homemade pesto dish). We were sad to go and can't wait to stay again on our next trip to Hawaii.

This is an ideal place for adventurous, outdoorsy people who enjoy nature and animals. This is a prime location for cycling enthusiasts. When you open the door to your room, you will see a field of green tea plants across the way at the tea farm. The off the grid room has solar powered lights and a couple usb charging ports for your mobile devices. Shower has running hot water. Experience our new model - waterless, dry flush toilet which does not use any harsh chemicals and has no odor. The Hawaiian style outdoor kitchen provides camping style cooking with a sink with cold running water, a gas BBQ, propane stove, a large polar cooler filled with ice - stays cold for 6 days. We also provide plates, cups, flatware, pots and pans and cooking utensils. We also have available beach towels. Boogie board, picnic basket and small cooler to use during your stay. We are located directly across the street from Mauna Kea Tea Farm. They do tours and tea tasting by appointment. So don't forget to schedule a tour before arriving. We are also located in an area with the best cycling on the island. Perfect location if you are a cyclist. As we are located in the hills above honokaa, a vehicle is a must. We are 5 min drive to Honokaa town and 20 min drive to Waimea. We are very centrally located half way between Kona and Hilo. We are only 40 min from Mauna Kea visitor center, a must see when visiting the Big Island. We have plenty of local recommendations to share with our guests. There are no street lights in the area, so it is very dark at night. It may be a challenge to find us at night for the first time.

Charming cottage located on the outskirts of Waimea town. Minutes to fabulous hikes, 20 minutes to Honoka'a and Waipi'o Valley and 25 minutes to the beautiful beaches of Mauna Kea and Hapuna. Isolated neighborhood provides peace and seclusion. The unit is quaint and bright with lots of windows. A great place to enjoy bright stars at night and mist that covers the nearby hills of the Kohala Forest Reserve.
Newly refurbished with new futon, new mattress and bed frame, new sheets and comforter and new towels.
  • it's a nice quirky little place. would have liked to stay longer, if we'd had the time... not sure about shower problems others have had - worked fine for us.

    Ottar2017-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Quaint , cozy, private, detached guest house. Small but comfortable for two, maybe three. Roosters and geese were our morning alarm clocks. Close to Waimea, so a good spot to stop if touring around Kohala, Waimea, or Waipio. Not luxurious, but hosts obviously want their guests to feel at home, and they've made improvements to the place. Tour guide book and chocolates were nice touches. Hot plate in kitchen, full sink and fridge. Would stay again.

  • Nice private detached home. Adam was very friendly and we enjoyed our stay on his property. Kitchenette didn't have microwave or oven, and shower was too temperamental for us to use, but we believe the shower issue can be resolved. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

    Sergio2017-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Adam was extremely communicative and responsive. The space was bright and cozy. The travel books were so sweet and the little goodies (tea, chocolate, drinks) in the kitchen made it feel like home. I even had the weird request of a pencil our first night; he provided one within minutes! A nice space for a single person looking to complete some work or a couple looking for a getaway. Quiet and calm environment.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hale Kipa! The place was just as described, and so much more. Mary Kay and Gerald are very kind, welcoming hosts, who made an incredible effort to make the space as perfect and comfortable as can be. Mary Kay's thoughtful details are everywhere. The kitchen area had everything we would need. Even down to everyday condiments like salt/pepper, oil, ketchup, butter and even soy sauce! Not to mention coffee, creamer, sugar and filters for the machine. I even saw a candy jar;) Everything was very new & very clean. The decorative touches are great. A vase of fresh hand picked flowers on a table meant a lot to my wife Lisa. Each day we had our coffee and breakfast on the lanai overlooking the scenic hilltops and a pasture with a few sheep and a calf. The birds were singing and roosters chimed in too. One day we had planned a hike not far from the house, but the weather was quite foggy. However, foggy weather equals romantic snuggle weather! Needless to say we made the most of it with a bottle of wine, a roaring fire, and by enjoying our lovely accommodation!! The next day we woke up early, hiked, drove around on a few side roads to enjoy the scenery of beautiful Waimea and stopped at some local farmer markets. There are stores close by to get a few groceries, and quite a large array of restaurants too. We took this nice little break from our own Vacation Rental, to enjoy Waimea which is about an hours drive for us. This stay exceeded our expectations...we shall see you again soon! Riaan & Lisa

  • Awesome!!!!! We really loved it!!! Such a big flat, just for us, in the countryside with everything around!!! You're near the nice beaches of North Kohala, Waipio, Kona.... And it is so peace full !!!!! We recommend +++ this place to everybody who wants to discover the north of Big Island. This was our favorite airbn'b in Big Island and if we come back, we'll go there! Thank you Mary Key and Gerald !!!!!!!

  • Mary Kay is a wonderful host. She was always available and very nice. Her loft is fantastic - it has everything that you could possibly need. I only wish that my trip was longer so I could have stayed.

  • Aloha, I really enjoyed my stay at their place. Beautiful space, nice touches, great little kitchenette to cook my meals in. Mary Kay was gracious, and let me borrow her blender for my morning smoothies. There was a problem with the toilet, I let them know, and her husband fixed it right away. Location is centrally located, easy to get to the best beaches, or go Hilo, Hawi etc. I was grateful to the neighbors roosters for keeping me on track, by helping me get up to get the most out of my days on vacation.

  • Fabolous!, Fabulous! Fabulous! Everything you'd want and more is supplied. Mary Kay's space is large, clean and pretty with a kitchen stocked with every amenity you need - dishes, flatware, toaster, toaster-oven, hot plate, fridge, microwave, cutting board etc . A large closet gives you a place to stow away your luggage and keep the room neat. There are lots of windows for a cross breeze and a nice overhang so you can leave them open when it rains. A lanai out front looks over the neighborhood and a few goats and cow. I was sorry to leave! Mary Kay is the friendliest and most charming of hosts too, which is why we go to Airbnb places; for that personal touch. Thanks for letting me stay at your lovely place.

  • I really enjoyed my stay at Country Comfort. Debi was a very gracious host. She made us feel very welcome with a warm Aloha. She made us a fresh whole banana bread which was still warm. The place had beautifully cut flowers. The place was clean, very comfortable and located on the wet side of Waimea which is great. Nice cool mountain breeze, cool at night and in very lush surroundings. There was all the things would find at home; towels, plates, utensils. There was cable tv. and even alot of videos to watch if you want to. There was a huge California size King size bed-very comfortable! The place was very spacious and it was easy to find. I would love to stay there again.

  • We loved our night in Debi's place. She greeted us upon arrival and showed us around the living area. It was cozy and comfortable. She gave us great suggestions for dinner and the banana bread was delicious for breakfast.
