Trail
“This painting of the Salt Lake depicts the Salt Lake of Larnaca with a glistening mirror image of the town in the water. Heading out of Larnaca by car towards the airport, avoiding the motorway route, you will end up on the Airport Road. This road stretches along the south end of the Salt Lake and offers magnificent views right across the lake with Larnaca town in the background. If you could peek around the tree in Theo's painting, you would also gain a splendid view of a mosque. Hala Sultan Tekke or the Mosque of Umm Haram is considered to be the third holiest place for Muslims in the world and well worth a visit. The mosque is located on the west bank of the Salt Lake and clearly sign posted from the Airport Road. The most captivating aspect of the Salt Lake has to be the presence of many migrating birds during the winter months; especially the flamingos offer a colourful and majestic sight. But the Salt Lake offers interest all year round. For most of the year it is dried out and you can cross it by foot to taste the salty crystals as they form and shimmer on the surface. Along the East side of the lake you will find a well tended path that connects the airport road in the south, to the Roman style aqueduct Kamares at the north end of the lake. This path is perfect for cycling and walking, stretching over several kilometres, and as mentioned above, creates a well maintained route from the aqueduct right around to the mosque Hala Sultan Tekke in the west. The complete hike may be too far to walk, but if you have access to a bicycle, it's a pleasant ride during the cooler months of the year. ”

Mosque
“This beautiful monument is located on the west bank of the Salt Lake. It is an important Islamic monument, one of the most revered sites in the Muslim world and it is used to this day for religious purposes. The mosque was built over the grave of Umm Haram or Ummü Haram, who was believed to be the sister of the Prophet Mohammed’s foster mother or a follower from Medina to Cyprus. Umm Haram arrived on the island either in 647 or 649, during the Arab raids led by the Arab Governor of Syria, Moawiya, in an effort to expand the Muslim empire in the Mediterranean Sea. However Umm Haram died shortly after her arrival and buried in the same place where she had fallen off her mule and died.”

“In the spring the lake is full of flamingos. Great for birdwatching, jogging the 4km each way or easy strolling. Evening walks are great for spotting bats and owls.. If you are feeling energetic, you can mountain bike around the entire lake, but probably too far to walk. Lots of viewpoints dotted around the top and has hidden, secret geocaches to find.”

“This historic mosque is located 3km west of Larnaka on the road to Kiti, on the main Salt Lake. After the Arab armies successfully landed in Larnaka in 648AD, the Holy Helper and aunt of Mohamed - Umm Haram - died at the site when she fell off her mule. Grand Khalif Moavia, who was taking part in the expedition, immediately ordered the construction of a mosque on the spot. The mosque was first renovated in 1816, and most recently in 2002 by UNOPS, when archaeological excavations also revealed that the site has been inhabited since Neolithic times, with some archaeologists believing that the tomb is a monumental monolithic tomb of the prehistoric period. ”

“Larnaka fort, which stands on the southern point of the coastal avenue known as Foinikoudes, at the water's edge, was built in the 17th century on the site of a previous fort or castle. Nowadays it hosts cultural and entertainment events and houses a museum consisting of three rooms situated on the upper floor of the main building.”

“It is an UNESCO World Heritage Centre since 1998. The Neolithic settlement of Choirokoitia, occupied from the 7th to the 4th millennium B.C., is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the eastern Mediterranean. Its remains and the finds from the excavations there have thrown much light on the evolution of human society in this key region. Since only part of the site has been excavated, it forms an exceptional archaeological reserve for future study. Occupied from the 7th to the 5th millennium B.C., the village covers an area of approximately 3 ha at its maximum extent and is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the eastern Mediterranean. It represents the Aceramic Neolithic of Cyprus at its peak, that is the success of the first human occupation of the island by farmers coming from the Near East mainland around the beginning of 9th millennium. It is only 50 minutes away by bus/car/taxi.”
