“Must do full day hike, with very rewarding views! Emerald lakes and the crater lake are huge highlights. Recommend taking the local shuttles. They do cost but it is the easiest option to get there and back safely. Summer is the best time for hiking the crossing, but essential to take plenty of food, water and extra warm gear incase of changing alpine weather. ”

“The Whakapapa Ski Area on the north-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu is New Zealand's largest ski area and is only about 20 minutes' drive from our lodge. Whakapapa is home to New Zealand's premiere beginners' area, Happy Valley with its own cafe, rental complex and ski school meeting area. The gentle slope is nice and long, giving you plenty of time to get the hang of your new sport. There are also over 30 groomed trails for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. The volcanic terrain at Whakapapa gives a massive variety between trails with the choice of bumps, chutes, drops, bowls or nice wide runs. For expert skiers and boarders there are 24 black and black diamond runs. ”
