“Newton is one of the most famous hawker centres in Singapore from a tourist point of view, owing to its many write ups in tourism guides and its proximity to Orchard Road, however the only reason it’s been included in this list is as an avoid. Overzealous touts, stalls that overcharge and no real examples of the best of anything mean you’re better off going elsewhere. You won’t eat badly here as such but given everything else that’s available elsewhere, why would you bother?”

Café
“A household name for savoury cafe classics, the Ann Siang outlet offers a lovely respite from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding areas. Its food is reliable European fusion fare – which has since earned the chain a rep as a go-to place for long brunches, romantic dates and group celebrations. Desserts here have a cult following – grab a friend or two and dig into the enormous Double Chocolate blackout cake or the Sticky Date Pudding.”

“One of the true Singaporean food center. You wont see many tourists here. However if you are a serious food lover, this is one place to get authentic Singaporean food. If you dont know what to order, just follow the line, you wont miss it, order whatever they are ordering.”

Cafe
“It’s your very own Parisian breakfast… in Singapore. Think freshly baked, buttery pastries, eggs in different ways, homemade jam, and a decadent croque monsieur that you won’t be able to pass up. The ambience will make you want to visit – the food will get you to return.”

Boulangeries

Boulangerie
“The baked goods taste delicious as it smells, Tiong Bahru Bakery is a hipster-cool bourgeoisie in the quaint Tiong Bahru neighborhood. This bake shop is constantly raved about for its high quality pain au Chocolat, Brioche, Croissants, and Kouign-amann. Some customers even went as far as saying Tiong Bahru Bakery has the best croissants in Singapore. Located in Tiong Bahru, this bakery sports a modern café style but the Chinese influence is strong on its signage and cutleries. ”

“No trip to JB would be complete without paying a visit to Hiap Joo Bakery! Opened since 1919, this is one of the oldest and traditional bakeries in the city. Anyone who's been to Hiap Joo will tell you not to miss their signature banana cake. This cake has just the perfect moisture and the taste isn't too sweet as well. If you love banana cakes, this is definitely one not to miss! Other than the banana cake, another highly recommended item is their coconut bun. This freshly baked bun has grated coconut fillings with palm sugar and you'll definitely want more after tasting it 😋”

Ice Cream Shop
“It has the best ice cream in Singapore, with exotic local flavours like Sea Salt Gula Melaka Ice Cream which is basically our local version of salted caramel (but better!). It is also a pretty little spot that locals love. ”
