“Sibelius is the most famous composer of Finland and this is a sculpture for him. Pretty much all Finns recognise at least the Finlandia hymn of Sibelius and may even get sentimental about it. His home was "Ainola" at Järvenpää about 30 km north of Helsinki, currently a museum. There used to be also other artists living in the area so there are other museums worth mentioning there as well, such as Halosenniemi and Aleksis Kivi Cottage, both by lake Tuusulanjärvi at Järvenpää. ”

“A must see fortress island. Take the ferry from Kauppatori, regular buss ticket will do. Take warm clothing, it's always chillier there than on the mainland. This is why it's full on a hot day! ”

“Visiting Helsinki without enough time to see Old Porvoo is kind of deficient, in my mind at least. You don't see these kind of charming medieval wooden towns elsewhere, they are to my understanding a true Nordic phenomenon of a rare and very charming type. You can reach Porvoo that is 50 km away by buses departing from the Kamppi main bus station (about an hours ride per direction). In summertime, a fantastic way to visit Porvoo is by making a day trip with the boat "Runeberg", built at same year as Titanic (1912, but still going strong!) departing from the Market Square. ”

“Peterhof Palace was built by Tsar Peter to outshine Versailles. He might not have managed to build a bigger palace, but the opulent water gardens his architects created beggar comprehension. Especially the grand cascade draws millions of tourists to Peterhof each year. Peterhof Palace is, strictly speaking, not located in St. Petersburg anymore, but a couple of miles away to the west. You will have to take one of the crazy hydrofoil speedboats to get there (which is an adventure in itself).”

“A little bird house where they do rescue work for injured natural birds. Also some exotic birds and free birds at the bond nearby.”

“Pieni viehättävä saari Kotkan edustalla. Sinne pääsee kesällä vesibussilla. Vanhoja linnakkeen raunioita, tykkejä, Ruotsinsalmen taistelun muistomerkki. Polku kiertää saaren ympäri.”

“Billnäsin ruukista kannattaa vähintäänkin ajaa läpi. Miljöö on nimittäin upea vanhoine tehdasrakennuksineen ja työläisten asuntoineen. Suurin osa rakennuksista on yksityisessä käytössä, mutta ruukki on ehdottomasti käynnin arvoinen. Täältä löytyy myös rakennusapteekki, jos vanhojen talojen kunnostaminen kiinnostaa. Billnäs is a beautiful little village with old factory buildings and qute red houses. Most of the buildings are in private use but it is at least worth driving trough the village or take a little walk around and explore. There is also a "Rakennus apteekki" that sells old doors, windows and anything you might need when renovating an old house.”
