“An ambitious contemporary art museum well worth checking out. The unfortunate abbreviation makes many think of sandwich topping made of pork's booty, but the only hunger you'll satisfy here is that for aesthetic revelation. Also admire the architecture of the so-called Tennis Palace housing the museum, as well a gigantic multiplex movie theatre. There was, however, never any tennis played here. Instead it was used as a basketball court in the 1952 Olympic Games. But that's another story. ”

“Amos Rex, a private art museum with unique architecture, was opened in central Helsinki at the end of August 2018. Amos Rex consists of new underground exhibition spaces, the old Lasipalatsi (glass palace) from 1936 and its Bio Rex cinema, as well as a vibrant event forum on Lasipalatsi Square, which serves as the roof of the exhibition hall. Amos Rex’s exhibition programme extends from the newest, often experimental, contemporary art to 20th-century Modernism and ancient cultures.”

“The charming Villa Hakasalmi is located next to Finlandia Hall near Töölönlahti bay. This elegant building retains a tangible sense of the Empire style era and is one of the few of its kind remaining in Helsinki. The best-known resident of Villa Hakasalmi was Aurora Karamzin (1808-1902), who lived there until her death. Because of this, the building is also referred to as the Karamzin Villa. The villa is today a branch of the Helsinki City Museum with changing exhibitions. An idyllic cafe is located on the courtyard, serving coffee, snacks and a daily changing lunch.”

“The main theme at the Degerby Igor Museum is the lease period of Porkkala 1944-1956, which was a consequence of the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union. The lease period of Porkkala was a unique epoch in the politic history of Finland. It was also a threat to the Finnish independence. Only now doors are opening and new information is coming to the surface and the interest in this period increases.”

Quartier
“Visiting Helsinki without enough time to see Old Porvoo is kind of deficient, in my mind at least. You don't see these kind of charming medieval wooden towns elsewhere, they are to my understanding a true Nordic phenomenon of a rare and very charming type. You can reach Porvoo that is 50 km away by buses departing from the Kamppi main bus station (about an hours ride per direction). In summertime, a fantastic way to visit Porvoo is by making a day trip with the boat "Runeberg", built at same year as Titanic (1912, but still going strong!) departing from the Market Square. ”

“Peterhof Palace was built by Tsar Peter to outshine Versailles. He might not have managed to build a bigger palace, but the opulent water gardens his architects created beggar comprehension. Especially the grand cascade draws millions of tourists to Peterhof each year. Peterhof Palace is, strictly speaking, not located in St. Petersburg anymore, but a couple of miles away to the west. You will have to take one of the crazy hydrofoil speedboats to get there (which is an adventure in itself).”
