Point of Interest
“Scattered around Styra in the south of Evia are some 25 megalithic structures, all perched on hills and mountains. Made with huge slabs of grey limestone, these pyramid-like buildings have drystone walls, bound purely by weight and without any sort of mortar. They also blend with their rocky backdrops, and often hardly look man-made until you see the rectangular doorways framed by massive slabs in their lintels and jambs. The best and most researched example is on Mount Oche at almost 1,400 metres, where the lintel is four metres long and two metres wide, weighing a mind-boggling 10 tons. Ceramics found at this building go back as far as the 8th century BC during the Archaic Period, which hints at the great age of the Dragon Houses.”

Lodging
“Porto Buffalo is a seaside settlement built on the inmost part of the bay with the same name, Buffalo. It is one of the most picturesque corners of southern Evia. Some taverns serve fresh fish. Nearby Porto Buffalo is the secluded beach, Sykies Gerou, with fig trees standing almost at the water. The beach is pebbly with a western orientation. To get there: pass through Porto Boufalo and continue for 3-4km south. To get to Porto Buffalo: There is a local ferry crossing to Evia from the village of Agia Marina, a few kilometres north of Schinias. ”

Point of Interest
“One of the oldest and most mysterious examples of architecture in Evia known as Drakospita (=dragon houses). They are built with large boulders. In the past, they were considered giant creations related to supernatural beings. The Dracones were built between the 7th and the 2nd century B.C. and we only meet them in the mountain of Ochi.”
