Getting around with public transport

In case you need to use a bus, metro, train and/or tram you will need a ticket (surprise!). You can get your ticket at every metro, train or tram station within the city. There are multiple options such as one-way ticket, 10-ticket pack, 3-day (tourist) pack, etc. Instructions on the issuing spots are pretty detailed. Keep in mind that every ticket is valid for 90 minutes after the first validation on the check points. Here's a link with the list of stations where you can get your ticket: https://athenacard.gr/jsp/smartafc/general/customers/ekdotiria-multiple.jsp P.S. If you are travelling by plane, the ticket fare from the airport to the city is sliglty bigger. I would suggest once on the airport, to buy your ticket for the transfer to the main city and also get your prefered ticket pack.

Nearby restaurants and cafe-bars

A few of many around the area of Pagrati. Would love to hear your thoughts on these and/or any suggestions on other worth visiting places that are included in my list as I wish to update it only with the best for my guests. Local tip: For those coffee lovers out there (I am one of them) try the 'Freddo Espresso" or "Freddo Capuccino" - famous iced coffee. I 've travelled a lot but nowhere in Europe have I found a place to make a proper iced coffee like this!

This pocket-size café-bar, located on a corner, is one of the places to be in Athens. From the day of its opening, Hotel Chelsea (or Chelsea for the locals) became the talk of the town as the new spot to hang out. Whether you are here for a coffee or drinks at night (though it will be better for you to come early to score some seats), Chelsea is a hot hangout spot in the neighborhood, ideal for people-watching.

Just a few blocks away from our apartment, Mavro Provato offers dishes made with the very best produce that Greece has to offer in a simple, friendly setting. From Cretan xinomyzithra, a sour whey cheese, to crisp, warm Kaisareia Pie stuffed with pastourmas (seasoned and air-dried cured beef), the menu is sophisticated yet with prices that would match a village mezedopoleio (a taverna serving small tapas-like meze dishes).

Pangrati’s Mystic (it has a sister restaurant in Exarchia) is housed in a picturesque, terracotta-roofed, old-style townhouse with green shutters, enormous wine barrels at its entrance and a charming terrace complete with the obligatory bougainvillea. Its menu includes vegan pizzas and pasta dishes with optional spelt-flour versions for those following a low-gluten diet. Yet with all the substitutions, there is certainly no loss of flavor and the atmosphere is one of genuine foodie passion and a healthy portion of hospitality. Meat lovers needn’t despair, however.

Yeap.. as you might have guessed here are some museums, monuments and points of interest within the city of Athens.

This dazzling museum at the foot of the Acropolis' southern slope showcases its surviving treasures. The collection covers the Archaic period to the Roman one, but the emphasis is on the Acropolis of the 5th century BC, considered the apotheosis of Greece's artistic achievement. The museum reveals layers of history: ruins are visible in its floor, and, through floor-to-ceiling windows, the Acropolis is always visible above. The surprisingly good-value restaurant has superb views; there’s also a fine museum shop.

The temple of Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea, dominates the southernmost tip of Attica, where the horizon meets the Aegean Sea. Perched on the craggy rocks of Cape Sounio, the temple is enveloped in myth and historic facts dated from antiquity until the present times. Make the most of your trip by indulging in a refreshing swim in the small beach by the foot of the temple of Poseidon or in any one of the neighbouring beaches in Legrena or Lavrio! Treat yourselves to some fresh fish and seafood in the local tavernas. The visitor has the opportunity to follow the production line of gas, to admire the old machinery, to discover the role of the businessmen and the workers of the factory, to be transported mentally to other periods of time and to learn about the working conditions.
The archaeological site of the Academy of Plato is shaped today as a park and is located at one of the oldest districts of Athens. The area, which in antiquity was called Academeia from the local hero Academos, became famous from the School of Philosophy that Plato founded there in 387 BC. It is worth visiting the nearby innovative Digital Museum of the Academy of Plato, a museum for the great philosopher, at his neighborhood.

Exploring Athens

Athens is quite a big city and apart from the city centre there are lots of spots in the suburbs that are worth visiting.. just to get a better feeling of the city vibes. I 've made this list with some of my favorite places in the city :) I apologize for being so long but honestly there are so many places to go. On a good note most of them are near to each other!
Although a bit away from the city centre this is a must see place. An oasis of Mediterranean greenery. For 170,000 square metres of parkland, complete with playgrounds, gardens, cafés, a striking eco-friendly glass complex (also home to the Greek National Opera), a manmade river, and a new National Library of Greece. Plus, there’s a great view of the Acropolis.

Marina Flisvos in Palaio Faliro is one of the most favorite spots of the city for walking next to the sea. It is one of the best destinations for entertainment and relaxation. In 2010 the renovation and improvement works were completed and as a result Athens obtained a marina of international specifications where you will also find a great variety of choices for food, entertainment and shopping. Ideal for families, without this meaning that it cannot provide romantic or relaxing moments to couples and groups of friends respectively.

This beautiful pedestrian street is located literally under the Acropolis and it is no accident that it is one of the most expensive streets of the capital. At the pedestrian street of Dionysiou Aeropagitou we encounter exceptional examples of ancient and modern architecture. The pedestrian zone, embracing the rock of the Acropolis, ends at the pedestrian street of Apostolou Pavlou, in Thissio. Here, the beautiful neoclassical and the lines of the old tram fade out at the paved street, creating a nostalgic atmosphere of old Athens to the neighborhood that is loves by the Athenians of every age, but also the visitors of the city.

Kolonaki, the aristocratic district of the centre, was, is and will be the first choice for any bon viveur, but also a really lively source of culture and quality entertainment. Traditionally it was considered the area of the elite, however today that is not true since Kolonaki, without losing its aristocratic aura, is an area open to all and ideal for all tastes. Historically, it took its name from the small pillars that the Turks have placed in the area to conform the Christians. The area has cafes, bars and clubs, chic boutiques and famous fashion houses, galleries and museums, all guaranteeing that will have a great time. The area is the favorite of politicians and artists and is close to Lycabettus and Syntagma square.

Lycabettus Hill is one of the highest peaks in Athens. You can get to it by hiking up a forested slope – only briefly, mind – or, if you’re feeling lazy, there’s a cable car to the top. At the peak you’ll find one of the most sweeping views of the city. There’s also a pretty whitewashed church called St George, a café and Orizontes, a gourmet Greek restaurant with surely the capital’s most scenic terrace. Concerts are held at the Lycabettus open-air theatre, built on another part of the hill, in summertime.

At the historical municipality of Marathon, at the northeastern part of Attica, 28 km from the centre of Athens, the dam of the artificial lake of Marathon is one of the most impressive sites of the area. The lake occupies an area of 2,450,000 m2 and is one of the 10 most important wetlands of Attica due to the great number of species that live there. It was created in 1931 with the erection of the dam and until 1959 was the basic source of water for Athens. The most important location of the municipality of Marathon is the famous Tomb, where they buried the 192 soldiers who fell in the battle against the Persians, in 490 BC. Nearby is the quiet beach of Marathon, ideal for families, since it has shallow waters. Here, there are taverns which serve fresh fish.

It is connected to the hills of the Observatory and the Pnyx, while at its top there is the monument of Philopappos, from which came the name of the hill. It is worth mentioning that as part of the unification of the archaeological sites in 2002 an effort was made to fence the area, so that it could be visited according to a schedule and a ticket, something that was averted after the dynamic reaction of the active movement of the residents of the area.
