Places To Go

Snape Maltings – this beautiful complex is three miles from Benhall and has a world-class concert hall, lovely shops, cafes (Café 1885 does good breakfasts and has an all-day menu), boutiques, antique shops, galleries, a lovely toy shop and beautiful walks around the reed beds of the River Alde and towards Iken. You can do boat trips from here but it’s seasonal and times vary so check in the craft shop at the Maltings. (IP17 1SR)

Food scene

Aldeburgh – very popular seaside town above ten/fifteen minutes away with shops, cafes, pubs and famous fish and chips which you can eat on the beach or there’s a diner above the Golden Galleon half way down the high street (this gets as busy as the take-away though). Just outside the town is The Red House, where Benjamin Britten composed much of his later work and you can take a tour of his house and garden. (IP15 5AR)

Orford – typical English village with beautiful houses, a quay where you can take boat rides out to Orford Ness and a Twelfth century castle. There are a couple of pubs (The Crown and Castle is owned by Ruth Watson of Country House Rescue), the Butley Oysterage restaurant and Pump Street Bakery. Down by the quay there is also Pinney’s which has delicious smoked fish which is worth the trip to Orford alone.

Darsham Nurseries Café – a favourite place to eat in the area. This is a lovely plant nursery with a shop and a really great café that specialises in local produce and vegetables from their own kitchen garden. Does regular supper clubs over the summer, breakfast, lunch and is open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays but you usually need to book. Main Road, Darsham IP17 3PW (just beyond the rail crossing at Darsham)

New-ish restaurant and bar (and hotel) with great, largely seafood based menu. Lively place with a roof terrace overlooking Aldeburgh beach.

Beaches

Southwold – lovely and very popular town with a busy high street and traditional beach. The Pier is very well organised with good cafes (the fish and chips are great), shops and quirkier additions such as the alternative arcade. In the summer there are normally horse and cart rides around the town. We love the Little Fish Shop (close to the Swan Hotel in town) and there is another branch – the Sole Bay Fish & Chips down by the harbour. You can also get a boat from the harbour over to Walberswick.

South Cove - Spectacular white sand beach. This is unaccessible by car so you have to be prepared to walk the mile or so to get here – but it’s well worth it. The beach is just up the coast from Southwold but very peaceful – with stunning marshes on one side and an endless sandy beach on the other. Follow signs to Cove Hithe from the A12.
