Witnessing a life event

Hundreds of turtles come back to the site where they were born to lay their eggs. Many of them come to Mon Repos where rangers take you onto the beach to enjoy two experiences. The mothers come three times each season and lay up to 150 eggs each time. These tours are available from November to January each year. You will see nearly all the eggs falling into a pit that the mother has dug, and you may be asked to help carry the eggs further up the beach if they are laid below the high tide water line. Then, from January to March each year, the youngsters push up through the sand and struggle down to the water to commence the plan for their life. There is a possibility that you may be able to hold them, but only for a few moments. In any event, you will see them arise from the sand, and follow their journey down to the water.

It is located on the corner of Bruce Highway and Old Creek Road, Apple Tree Creek, about 50 km south of Bundaberg in central Queensland, Australia. Scenic Drive - Boolboonda Tunnel, Mt Perry The best way to discover our region is to take a road trip and a scenic drive to Boolboonda Tunnel Mount Perry is a perfect place to start. Boolboonda Tunnel extends 192m into rock, is unlined and unsupported. It is known as the longest unsupported tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere! It was originally built in 1883 for the railway line between Bundaberg and Mount Perry but is now home to a colony of bent-winged bats and used to access residential properties. Just before you reach the tunnel is a large tree located on the left. It is customary for tunnel visitors to carve their name into the tree. Kids love to climb and play all over this tree. There is a nice picnic table located under the tree, the perfect spot for a rest while the kids play. To get there: The tunnel is easy to find with plenty of signage. Turn off the Bruce Highway head along Mt Perry Road until you reach the Boolboonda Tunnel sign. The tunnel is then located about 1km in from the turn off not long after you hit the dirt road. While you are out that way why not carry continue your drive to Mount Perry. Nestled within the Boolboonda and Normanby Ranges, Mount Perry only another 20 minutes down the road. It is a quaint little town with a great look out.

History

Bert Hinkler and his family were residents of Bundaberg, and he was a very famous aviator in world history, and especially Australian history. So, should you have sufficient time, you may like to consider a visit to the museum there, and sit in one of his 'planes. You may also visit the Botanical Gardens and enjoy lunch at the 1928 Café in the same location. (1928 was the year of the first flight from England to Australia!) Both the Hinkler House (same location) and Fairymead House sugar mill history (different location) are also worthy of consideration for a visit. http://www.hinklerhallofaviation.com/

Visiting the Mystery Craters is a journey of discovery! Halfway between Bundaberg and Gin Gin, 100m off the main road, is Australia’s most baffling phenomenon. Since their discovery in 1971, the origins of the 35 oddly shaped craters have remained the subject of controversy. The mottled mixture of sandstone and ochre stain have been the subject of many investigations and various theories have been offered. Mystery Craters have been featured on many documentaries including Unsolved Mysteries of the World, Getaway, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, Great South East, Creek to Coast, Caravan and Motor Home magazine, and more! Sit and relax with a cuppa as you ponder the creation of our Mystery Craters. Allow about a 20-minute drive from Bundaberg.

THE HISTORY OF SCHMEIDER'S COOPERAGE & COOPERING IN BUNDABERG In 1970 Dave Schmeider gained a four-year apprenticeship with the Bundaberg Rum Distillery. His trade involved the repairing the old kegs used for the transportation of the rum and from time to time, he also helped with the construction and maintenance work on the large maturation vats. Dave was the last cooper to learn the trade at the Rum Distillery, and In the early 1980's, the Rum Distillery installed their bottling plant so the trade then died as all the rum was bottled before shipment. As Dave loved his trade, he decided to see if he could keep it alive by starting his own business. With his wife Pam, Schmeider's Cooperage began on the 7th November, 1982. Starting with a small workshop at the rear of their home, the trade was once again alive. Over the past 25 years, Schmeider's Cooperage has gained in both size and recognition. During this time Dave trained a number of apprentices. One of them being the current owner and head cooper Justin Gillett.
