Sightseeing

In this category you will find suggestions on special places you may wish to visit.
Flåm and the areas around offer a variety of interesting things to see and to do. Note, for instance, Fåmsbana railway, which Is probably the most spectacular train journey in the world. I would also recommend Stegastein viewpoint, and Undredal Stølsysteri. It is possible to take day trips from Vamråk. Wednesdays and Fridays are the best days for day trips. Please use kringom.no to check the timetables. The nearest ferry leaves from Ortnevik, and takes you to Vik or Nordeide. The other ferry is further away but runs all night. It leaves from Oppedal and takes you to Lavik. Please ask if you need additional information concerning traveling. And note that Flåmsbana needs to ne booked (a very) long time in advance. However, if you miss it let me know and we’ll see if it may still be arranged.

In Fjærland you may visit a glacier. Bøyabreen is probably a very good alternative. It is possible to make day trips from here, any day.

It is possible to take the local ferry from Ortnevik to Vik, and then back some hours later. To my mind, this trip is magic. You will see remote places where people live, without any other physical connection to the world than this boat that you are on. As you do not need a car for this trip, it would cost you next to nothing. In Vik there are shops close to the sea, and you will find cafes as well. There is also a beautiful stave church that you may wish to visit. Timetable for the boat trip: https://www.fjord1.no/Ruteoversikt/Sogn-og-Fjordane/Baatruter/Vik-Ortnevik

Solund municipality is situated in the very end of the Sognefjord, on the north side of the fjord. The municipality consists of 1700 islands and islets, and the Sognefjord merges with the ocean in this municipality. You may take day trips, and you may travel on both sides of the fjord. Many places worth seeing, not at least as a contrast to the high mountains where you are staying.

If you would like see the St Olav’s church, or the majestic Kvikne’s Hotel, or perhaps the Sognefjord aquarium, an art village or the museum of travel and tourism - this is the place. Easy to take day trips from Vamråk, and see it all.

Acitivites

In this category you will find various activities, suitable for both kids and adults.
Grown ups (with kids) may do easy hiking by walking the roads and continuing into the fields above it. Please feel free to use food boxes and other equipment from the kitchen, to bring food and drinks. Grown ups may do tough hiking in Vamråk. Please ask for advice. And make sure to bring proper shoes. Kids (and adults?) may find it interesting to look for crabs along the shoreline. You will most certainly find crabs, only by lifting up stones. If lucky, you will find eels as well. Swimming is a great activity but obviously the sea may be relatively cold. The locals (myself included) very often "solve the problem" by jumping straight into the sea :) You should know that there is a risk of touching the jellyfish. However, I have been swimming here for an endless amount of hours, and would not even think of it as it never happened to me or anyone I know. Unfortunately, using fishing rods from the dock normally ends up being only trouble (and sometimes cause tears) unless you know how to do it. The lures get stuck to the bottom, and may then be lost. Moreover, the fishing line quite often turns into a big tangle that takes hours to untangle. For this reason I recommended fishing only from a boat, where these problems are far less likely to occur. It is possible to rent a boat if you wish to take trips on your own, to get the proper feeling of the fjord, or to do fishing. Please ask me about this, if you are interested. Snorkeling is another activity that is very nice. If you want to borrow snorkeling equipment for kids, please ask as I do have one set (however I cannot replace it immediately if it is suddenly broken by someone). If you are interested in wildlife, you will most certainly see much of it. As it is hard to explain the details in what to look for, please ask and I will direct you. But at least you should normally see the porpoises, and quite often an otter or more, or perhaps an eagle or a seal. Moreover, the squirrels sometimes pay a visit to the property, and so do the weasels. The premises outside allow you to leave kids to play with little concern, as there is a fence around the property. There are some ropes around - please see the attached pictures. Some seasons there are quite a lot of wild berries to be found, in particular strawberries and raspberries. Moreover, on the property you will find at least raspberries and plums. Please feel free to pick what you find. Obviously, what may be eaten depends on the time of year of your stay.

Neighborhoods

Only a few kilometers from Vamråk. You can drive onto the top of the mountain, where you may enjoy a spectacular view, down to the small places straight below, and to the fjord and the mountains surrounding them. You will be more than 700 meters above sea, and be looking down at the place where the Sognefjord is at its deepest - 1308 meters below sea level. Lake fishing in the area is possible.

Ortnevik is a beautiful place 17 kilometers east of Vamråk, where there is a variety of things to see and do. The world's biggest onshore halibut breeding farm is in Ortnevik. There is also an amazing sculpture park, and a ferry that is really worth taking a trip with. Please see my suggestion "Vik" (sightseeing). From Ortnevik it is possible to do hiking, both in the mountains (Stølsheimen) and along the sea.

Museums

This place has an amazing museum of (mostly) stuffed animals from the wilderness. Hence, it is called a "wilderness museum" (Villmarksmuseum). You will see a brown bear, a polar bear, foxes, a series of birds and small animals from the local wilderness, deers, a lynx, and many more.
