Roast is located inside The Commons, a 4-storey building of cafes, food kiosks, and restaurants. And fronting the Commons is Roast which is said to have brought the cafe culture to Thailand. Only 8 mins by car or 15 mins walking from my house (1.5 km) And when we arrived at 8.50am–it opens at 9–there was already a queue. The all-day breakfast menu is quite extensive–from egg dishes to pastas and meats–and requires some time to study it. If only they asterisk their signatures. Roast is very serious about their coffee. In fact, it starts off being a coffee specialty before it builds its name as a cafe. (If you just want to try their coffee, they have a kiosk on the first floor called Roots.) Signature Drinks Their signature, iced espresso latte (120 baht, S$5.40) has sparked off many copycats. It consists of ice cubes of espresso, accompanied with a small jar of cold milk. You pour the milk over the ice cubes and wait for them to melt so that it becomes a latte. It is nice but I’d suggest them serving it with warm milk. Their foxy latte (100 baht, S$4.50) art is on point and their coffee is delicious. It’s fruity, almost raisin-like, before mellowing into a bitter chocolate aftertaste. Superb. One of the best coffees I have tasted. Signature Dish The S’mores custard cake (280baht, S$12.60) is a three-layer cake: meringue, chocolate custard (which is like mousse), and graham cracker streusel. It can be overly sweet to some people but, to us, the coldness and the high-quality chocolate give a great satisfaction. It’s paired with banana ice cream, which may sound strange, but it goes superbly with the cake. The corned beef hash consists of two poached eggs on house-made corned beef, and sauteed potatoes. The beef is too dry and comes off hard, not crispy. Individual elements of the dish have no interactions with one another although the potatoes are super delicious. Local Thai Restaurant

A guide to Best Thai restaurant in Hipster Neighbourhood of Ekkamai
Spicy and tasty! Real local southern style Thai food. Only 7 mins by car (1.5km) The fiery and pungent flavours of the south are on full display at Phuket Town Restaurant in Bangkok’s trendy Thong Lor area. The little kopi-shop style cafe has always caught our eye from outside, but we were taken aback by how terrific the food turned out to be. The cute, bright shophouse welcomes people in with its huge windows and wooden front door, transporting guests to the colonial Southern town's old quarter. But the food is the real star of the place, with classic Phuket dishes like kai thod kamin (fried chicken with turmeric), kanom jeen nam ya poo (rice vermicelli with crab curry) and stir-fried sataw with shrimp. Taking its name and theme from the historic capital city of Thailand’s only island province, the restaurant is run by a native Phuket family. The cramped air-con dining room is outfitted with round wooden tables, colourful paintings of Phuket town scenes and Chinese lanterns hung from an oversize chandelier. Though some won’t appreciate the corner TV, we liked how its mix of cartoons and news contributed to the casual atmosphere. True to the south, tasty Thai iced tea is served along with bitter coffee with sweet condensed milk, several juices and a few beer options. The focus is on food, with important Southern Thai ingredients like cumin, turmeric, coconut and pineapple figuring prominently. Dishes like stir-fried pork with pickled bean curd reflect Phuket’s Chinese influences. Yet the majority of the seven-page menu features curries and chilli pastes, some intensely flavoured while others, like the popular khanom jeen nam yaa puu (crab curry with fermented rice noodles), prove that Southern Thai food can be mild too. The deep-fried chicken wings doused in cumin and served with black sticky rice looked tempting as a starter, but we couldn’t pass on pak mieang kai. This mild dish, which we noticed was ordered by practically every other table, starred the wide and earthy pak mieang (also spelt lieang) leafs that grow in the south, stir-fried with egg and some spotlight-stealing dried shrimps in a scorching wok. Topped with fried garlic and shallot, the dish was hearty without being oily, mellow tones cushioning the bold flavours of other dishes. Though we’ve heard good things about the sun-dried shrimp paste, we opted for the slightly more daring nam prik pla ching chang. This funky relish is based around deep-fried kata, a tiny sardine-like fish that’s eaten head, tail and all. Fresh chilli, lime and fish sauce helped create an intense flavour profile leaning towards the salty and with plenty of heat. The brown paste was spooned on to acacia leaf omelette along with steamed and fresh veggies like wing beans, okra and white turmeric. Nearly changing our minds in favour of the presumably rich Phuket pork belly stew, we thankfully stuck to a plate of pad pak sataw kung, or prawns with stink beans in a delicious brown sauce. With their unmistakable aroma, the astringent beans were bright green and fresh, wading in a sauce rich with roasted garlic, red chillies and dark shrimp paste. If you’re on a first date, maybe hoping for a first kiss, it’s best to avoid this one. You know what: forget the kiss. The stink beans are that good. We also sampled the pla kapo cumin, a mild fish soup flavoured with slices of orange cumin and lemongrass. The only dish out of the four that wasn’t worth writing home about (lemongrass overpowered cumin), the pale yellow broth and very fresh silver pearl fish was welcome between bites of the spicier dishes. Next time we’ll go for the whole pla-mong fish deep fried with cumin to a golden yellow. From a selection of nine Chinese-Thai dessert bowls, we ordered the traditionally Phuketean oh-aew. The main ingredient is a clear jelly made from banana and some kind of boiled seed, rounded out by crushed ice, red beans and a red sugar syrup. Even though we thoroughly enjoyed it, we couldn’t help but wonder if the custard apple ice cream with milk or black sesame dumplings in ginger tea might have been ever better. One of the best Thai restaurants in town, it does Khon Kaen meets Trat cuisine. Great lunch set menu! Only 5 mins by car and 15 mins walking (1.2km) Unabashedly traditional flavors, a classy yet casual atmosphere, and prices that don’t make the eyes water—you’d be hard pressed to find a more successful combination, as Supanniga’s three branches and a dinner cruise attest. Alongside familiar staples, three-generation-old recipes highlight the underappreciated dishes of Thailand’s east, like the rich and buttery stewed pork with chamuang leaves. Inspired by his grandmother recipes, the owner Eh opened Supanniga Eating Room, serving an appetizing range of traditional Thai dishes from both her hometown in Trat (by the east coast) and Khon Kaen (northeast) where the family is now based. With comfortable but chic decor, an outside terrace and some strong martinis, this restaurant on Thong Lor is worth a trip along the road to Soi 8. It is very easy to find, in an old shop-house just a few metres before the Ei8ht lifestyle mall on the right-hand side if you are coming from the BTS (Thong Lor). It’s around a ten-minute walk, but you can take a taxi from Sukhumvit for around 50 baht. Over three floors this restaurant is a combination of brushed concrete and wooden fittings, inspired by the hotel of the same name that Eh’s family own in Issan. It feels a lot more spacious than it looks outside. At the back of the ground floor there is a low bar and a decent selection of wine on the shelves. On the third floor there is a cosy outdoor veranda space with a sofa and cushions, coveted as the best seats in the house. The tables are laid with pretty blue-and-white china, the accent colour is sunshine yellow and despite the modern touches it feels like popping round to a friend’s place for a bite to eat. But most people aren’t lucky enough to have friends who can cook like the team at Supanniga Eating Room, who take home-cooking to a new level. We tried a variety of dishes recommended by Eh. Ka lum plee tod nam pla is cabbage fried quickly in a very hot wok and seasoned with high-quality fish sauce from Trat; the scent of this can sometimes be overpowering, but in this dish it was just the right balance. Kaeng moo chamuang curry is sweet and mild, pork and the leaves of the garcinia cowa tree, a relative of the mangosteen. Desserts include a classic mango sticky rice and the rather more inventive Thai tea panna cotta; much less creamy that its Italian counterpart. Alongside the well-stocked wine cellar, Supanniga Eating Room serves a decent selection of strong martinis, including a British-inspired Earl Grey tea martini. Their fresh juices and mocktails also complement the food nicely, especially the sweet and refreshing Roselle cordial. Supanniga Eating Room is a fantastic local restaurant which addresses the needs of discerning diners who are looking to experience time-honoured regional cooking. Soul Food is strong on both fronts: potent cocktails and perfectly executed regional Thai food.  This “Thai-style izakaya” excels in the type of creative spins on traditional street food favorites that set pulses racing. Set on still-buzzy Thonglor, the brainchild of food writer Jarrett Wrisley and wife Candice Lin keeps things fresh with weekly specials, a laid-back vibe and a signature cocktail list brimming with creativity. Only 7 mins by car (1.9 km) Soul Food Mahanakorn serves up popular regional dishes in the cosy wood-lined restaurant on Thong Lor, only five minutes’ walk from the BTS. If you are looking for a great evening with delicious food and no pretentions then this is the place to go. Read more at: http://www.bangkok.com/magazine/soul-food.htm?cid=ch:OTH:001 On the ground floor you will find the bar, so if you fancy just coming in for a drink then simply grab a stool here. The restaurant keeps things simple; on each floor the only decor is original artwork depicting the hive of activity that can be found along the alleyways of Bangkok. There is no denying the dedication and love felt for this city and Thailand, and nowhere is that reflected better than in Soul Food’s dishes. The philosophy of Soul Food is to offer comfort, satisfaction and care when it comes to both food and setting. The menu starts with a selection of bites that make the perfect accompaniment to their strong, tasty cocktails. Issan chicken wings are grilled and served with a side of sweet chilli sauce and syrupy sour naam jim – a blend of chilli, fish sauce, vinegar and sugar. For a snack from Southern Thailand try the crispy samosas, a jumble of chicken and cumin served with mint and yoghurt dip. Be sure to check out their signature drinks list. Among our favourites are bung Bang Fai: tequila, lime, chilli, almond syrup and egg whites served over ice and the Soul Punch, a muddle of Thai whisky, amaretto, guava and passion fruit. There is plenty to chose from on the main menu, but make sure you also check out the specials. With a focus on fresh local produce, there can often be some unusual Thai specialities on here. What makes the classics like khao soi and massaman curry really stand out is the quality of the ingredients; they taste like the best versions of Bangkok’s famous street food. The basics are sourced from smallholdings around the country, with plenty of free-range and organic produce with many of the sauces and spice mixes being created in Soul Food’s kitchen. The dishes that our table always fights over are the sticky tamarind ribs, meat so tender that it falls off the bone and the fresh sea bass grilled in banana leaf with lemongrass, dill and lime, a more subtle flavour but just as delicious. It’s a great place to come in a large group, there are so many appetizing dishes on the menu that you will want to try them all, but be sure to book as it can get busy after 19:00. What Soul Food shows is that it is not necessary to be a local to create fantastic Thai food. It's best to come here in a group because the family-style menu is packed with mouth-watering dishes. Signatures include sticky tamarind ribs, pork belly curry, crispy sea bass with Thai basil and green pepper, and smoked duck with red curry and rambutan. The ground floor bar serves creative cocktails, and a narrow stairway leads to a mezzanine dining room with vintage photos of Bangkok on the wall. Vegan Cafe & Restaurant

It’s all about vegan! Great for home made vegan but cheese, burger and kombucha! Only 8 mins by car (2 km) Cheese snobs should skip this story. This one's for all the vocal vegans, silent converters and plant-based-food enthusiasts out there. Bangkok's finally got a nice and varied supply of what you've been dreaming about: vegan cheese. We know you have, admit it! Barefood Bangkok is the engine fermenting the cashew nuts needed to see this cheese through, a process that takes at least a month, depending on how hard you like your cheese. When stored in the fridge, it keeps for... well, as long as you want it to. The couple behind Barefood Bangkok takes the art of fermentation very seriously. We could tell by the book they had sat on the table titled The Art of Fermentation. We could also tell by the way the topic of vegan cheese was talked about: very passionately, with love and with a lot of knowledge collected through the trials and errors of fermentation.
