Most people don’t know that Medicine Lake Volcano is the largest volcano (by volume) in the Cascade Range. A shield volcano, rising 3,900 feet above the Modoc Plateau to an elevation of 7,795 feet, it was formed gradually by lava flows from several small, gentle eruptions. Medicine Lake fills the caldera in the summit area of the volcano and provides great fishing, camping, hiking, boating, and swimming in the summer months. Several rim volcanoes, including Mt. Hoffman, Medicine Mountain, Badger Peak, Grouse Hill, Red Shale Butte, Glass Mountain, and Lyons Peak now surround the lake. Of these, Glass Mountain is the most impressive. Named for the smooth, black, glass-like obsidian flow that covers the mountainside, it’s where Native Americans used to “shop” for sharp stones for tool and weapon making. Please note that, as with all historic and pre-historic artifacts on public lands, law prohibits removing any obsidian in the Medicine Lake area. WHERE: From Weed, head south on I-5 CA-89 for 38 miles to Harris Spring Rd/Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. From there, take Medicine Lake Rd, 35 miles to the lake

Mossbrae Falls is a waterfall flowing into the Sacramento River, in the Shasta Cascade area in Dunsmuir, California. The falls are located just south of the lower portion of Shasta Springs. Access to the falls via a mile-long hiking trail on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks is currently closed, as Union Pacific and the City of Dunsmuir figure out a safer route to the falls. They are currently building a new access route to be completed by summer 2020.

Hedge Creek Falls is a waterfall on Hedge Creek, in the Shasta Cascade area in Dunsmuir, California. There is a small cave located behind the waterfall, allowing visitors to walk behind the cascading water.[1] Shortly after the waterfall, hedge creek flows into the Sacramento River south of Mossbrae Falls. There is a viewing platform over the river, with a view of Mount Shasta. Access to the waterfall and viewing platform is via a short hiking trail. Back in 1988 a group of veterans in Northern California got together and founded the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden. The veterans convinced the U.S. Park Service to help them honor those who have served in the nation’s armed forces by turning over 136 acres of land to be used for the Garden on the northwestern slope of Mt Shasta in Siskiyou County, California, not far south of the Oregon border. The Garden, which today is sponsored and maintained by the Kiwanis Club of Weed/Lake Shastina, has been planted with tens of thousands of trees to honor those who have perished in the nation’s wars. Enhancing the site is the sculpture garden itself, the work of Dennis Smith, a former Marine who served with Bravo Company, 1/26 in Vietnam during the Siege of Khe Sanh. “The sculptures at the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden are beautiful depictions of the human form as we might view it: engaged in war and yet at the same time reacting to the atrocities of war, or suffering from the aftermath, ” the documentary filmmaker Ken Rodgers wrote recently after paying a visit to his fellow Khe Sanh veteran at the Garden. “They are thought-provoking, expressive, and evocative of something more difficult to discover, the ‘why’ of war and it’s aftermath.” The wall is in honor of local Veterans. If you look on the backside of the left wing, you can find our names, Arnold Harris USMC & Gloria Gordon USN.

You don't need to head to England to experience the genius of a Shakespearean play. Much closer to home is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival located in Ashland, Oregon. (1 hour north of Guest House) Every year at the end of October you can enjoy on average over ten of Shakespeare's plays performed in both classic and newly imagined style. Separate tickets are needed for each show which is held at one of the event campus's two indoor or one outdoor spaces.
