WINERIES AND CELLAR DOORS

As Australia’s oldest continuous wine producing area, commencing from the early 1800s, the Hunter contains over 150 wineries and numerous cellar doors. The four champion wine varieties were, and still are, Shiraz, Semillon, Chardonnay and Verdelho. The area is recognised as the world's best Semillon region. More recently newer varieties have been introduced including Tempranillo (Spanish), Touriga Nacional (Portuguese), Barbera (Italian), Vermentino (southern Italian) and Fiano (southern Italian). You will be warmly welcomed and have a great time visiting any of the cellar doors. Some are listed below: CENTRAL POKOLBIN - Lakes Folly Vineyard, Pepper Tree Wines, Small Winemaker's Centre and Audrey Wilkinson. (Muse Restaurant is at Hungerford Hill Wines). HEADING WEST - Take Broke Road towards Broke for David Hook Wines, Tyrrells Wines and Glandore Estate Wines. Turn right at Hermitage Road for Tintilla Estate and Wombat Crossing Vineyard. Cafe Eno is at Peppers Creek Village, Restaurant Botanica is near Wombat Crossing and Margan Restaurant is at Broke. HEAD SOUTH - Take McDonalds Road towards Mount View for Usher Tinkler Wines, Petersons Wines and Briar Ridge Vineyard. (Bistro Molines is near Briar Ridge).
We drink their Shiraz. Petersons Wines was established in 1971 and produce premium wines. They have three cellar doors located at Mount View, [Mudgee] and a small outlet conveniently located nearby on Broke Road. (Not to be confused with Peterson House Wines).

Established in 1963 by Max Lake, a hand surgeon who knew little about wine making. At the time, the locals said he was a fool, he responded 'Well if I am a fool, this is my folly". Max Lake is generally regarded as the "father of the Australian boutique wine industry". Lakes Folly is famous for its cabernet and chardonnay. Dr Lake passed away in 2009 and the property is now owned by Peter Fogarty (W.A. Company). Look for the sign on the gate to check it is open. Lakes Folly has tons of character and well worth a visit.

CONNECTING WITH NATURE

The Lower Hunter consists of a number of regions including the Hunter Wine region (also known as Hunter Valley Wine Country). This contains three sub-regions; Broke, Fordwich and Pokolbin. The Pokolbin subregion extends to Wollombi, Mount View, Cessnock and Lovedale. Geologically, the Lower Hunter is an ancient drowned delta. The bones of ancient marine animals provide the limestone that contributes to the soil's suitability for growing grape vines to make award-winning wine. Closer to the Brokenback Range the soil has some volcanic properties too. This benefits red wines. The Hunter region is fringed by the mountain ranges of the Great Dividing Range to the north, west and south-west. The Greater Blue Mountains National Park covers about one million hectares with eight adjacent conservation reserves, including Wollemi and Yengo National Parks which are to the southwest of the Hunter Valley. Villa Augusta looks southeast towards Mount View with Pokolbin State Forest to the west. The mountain ranges as viewed from the Hunter Valley are worth the trip if you have time. Check with the NPWS website before visiting the parks, particularly after rain when some of the dirt roads can be slippery. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/old-great-north-road-world-heritage-walk/map
