Tucked away in a small pedestrian-only walkway near other shops and cafes, this is one of Vancouver's best Japanese / sushi restaurants. A tiny place with incredible food and cool atmosphere. You would never find this place unless you had a local let you in on the secret! A 10 minute walk from our home. It's a bit tricky to find, as it is wedged in between 2 streets on a small walkway, you can enter off of either street.

A surprisingly well-kept secret even among Vancouverites, the patio at the Art Gallery Cafe is a fantastic place to enjoy a light lunch, beer, or glass of wine on a sunny afternoon while exploring downtown Vancouver. Very reasonably priced! You can get anything from a coffee to a decent lunch, or just a glass of wine. Located on the south facing steps of the Art Gallery overlooking the pedestrian area of Robson Square, many people do not know this little oasis of sun and relaxation is there! This is a sunny day destination ONLY.

You really should explore East Vancouver, and Commercial Drive is the epicentre of East-Van cool. Loads of independent restaurants, shops, and a very hip scene. Havana is a mainstay on "The Drive", you can't miss for the people watching, food, drink, and scene sitting on the patio - rain or shine. Vancouver patios stay open year round with heaters and canvas covers because we just don't let the weather cramp our style - EVER!

Proprietors Eric and Allura have secretly built this small eatery into destination for an unbelievably extensive list of whiskeys from everywhere around the world. Fun place to grab some value priced pub food, sample local craft beers, and people watch from the patio. Also open for brunch on weekends. It's a fun place no matter when, located in the heart of Vancouver's iconic and very hip Commercial Drive ("The Drive"). Fets and many of the neighbouring independent restaurants are family friendly too. Fet's one of our fave places to grab a burger or salad, or brunch with the kids. A Vancouver classic, locals only!

We love this little hole in the wall restaurant that serves up awesome tapas and small plates along with great drinks all for reasonable prices. We love this intimate little out of the way restaurant for either a romantic dinner, dinner among good friends, or even to take a few older kids along. Fantastic food, great service, great wine, in a very old building on the edge of downtown where it starts heading east. Not much of a walking scene around here in the evening, as a matter of fact you don't really want to wander east of here in the evening. That said, this is one of our favourite new restaurant finds in the city recently.

The Malaysian food here will blow your mind. There are a few locations, we think the West Broadway one near Oak Street is the best. The one down on Denman is also good if you are strolling around in the West End, ditto for the one on West Broadway in Kitsilano. You simply cannot go wrong here if you love ethnic food with a twist. The peak of rainy day comfort food. Burgoo has locations in Kits, Point Grey, and on Main street all nearby. Think log cabin by the fire having a hearty bowl of home made soup or stew along with a gooey sandwich grilled with home made bread. Beer and wine on tap to wash it down. You will leave happy and full - there is nothing like Burgoo and it is a must do in Vancouver. It pleases adults seeking something different and even the kids (think chocolate fondue and home made mac and cheese….). The "fonduemental" is a great starter if you like strong cheese to dip your fresh grapes and apple into…. sometimes we go JUST for this and a glass of wine, mead, or hoppy beer on tap! Burgoo is a winner and the prices are excellent value.

Famous for being among the most beautiful beaches in the world and Vancouver's only official "clothing optional" beach, there is so much more to Wreck Beach. The trail down to it (about 400 wooden and stone steps carved into steep cliffs descending from UBC) is worth walking up and down even if you didn't want to stay at the beach. On cloudy or rainy days it is a beautiful and largely deserted place to go for a walk - you will feel like you are in the middle of nowhere on the edge of Canada's west coast, you can see only ocean and islands from here. On a sunny summer day, Wreck is a bustling place that feels like you have been transported to the other side of the planet from Vancouver - lots of make-shift vendors selling tie-dye, food, drinks, and pretty much anything else. It can be family friendly if you move to the edges of the main beach village atmosphere and the beach is stunning, especially when the tide is out. Leave your inhibitions behind, this is something unlike anything else in Vancouver!

A stunning beach frequented mostly by locals, beneath the cliffs and homes above NW Marine Drive (which continues West along the water all the way to UBC campus). The tide goes out about 1km here for fun whether it is in or out as the shallow water is safe and stays quite warm, especially when the tide comes in. The western-most beach in the city and immediately joining Locarno Beach. See comments under Locarno beach as it is really all just one continuous beach - we always refer to the whole place as Spanish Banks. As you approach the far west end of the beach it starts to get much more rugged and you can continue walking along here all the way around to Wreck beach a few km around the point if you want seclusion and untouched natural beauty. There are some abandoned WWII gun towers along the beach as you head far west, something many Vancouverites have never even seen… eerily cool. A reminder that there was a time when this small Canadian city felt a need to fortify the entrance to our beautiful harbour.

The closest of Vancouver's downtown beaches, with amazing sunshine facing straight south and close in views of Kitsilano and Granville Island on the city's Westside. This beach is sandy, good for swimming, is made up of a string of smaller coves that stretch for about 2km, and is often less crowded than the more popular downtown beaches in Stanley Park. At the western end of the beach is the intersection of Denman and Davie Streets - this is the epicentre of Vancouver's West-End neighbourhood and small cafes, restaurants, and shops stretch for many blocks up each street, particularly Denman.

Vancouver's iconic and massive downtown park. Surrounded on 3 sides by water at the tip of the downtown peninsula with a 10km sea wall for walking, biking, or roller-blading all the way around a preserved old growth forest. This is one of Vancouver's best kept secrets. You see a completely different side of the city here at its southern reaches where the tug boats chug along the mouth of the Fraser River headed to or from the ocean. A beautiful, quiet slice of nature. Sunsets are amazing here and the wooden walkway along the tidal river shore and the multi-acre park are extremely peaceful. You can walk or bike the Arbutus Greenway to its southern end and you will be right near this great park that almost nobody seems to know about. Never crowded, as beautiful on a rainy day as a sunny day.

It's a haul to get there as this park is in the upper reaches of North Vancouver, but it is worth it. Hike through old growth forest along the amazing Lynn Canyon and go over suspension bridges that cross waterfalls in the forest. Free. Beautiful. Make a half day of it. Go only when its dry… this is serious rain forest and the trail is best done when it is dry as there are plenty of steep slopes and steps.

It's a haul to get there as this sea side village is located at the outer northeastern reaches of North Vancouver, but it is worth it. A pretty village with a few cafes, a waterfront park, a few small shops located in a stunning bay far up Burrard Inlet's "Indian Arm" surrounded by massive mountain peaks. You won't believe you are only 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver when you are here. Make a few hours of it for a stroll. Go only when its dry… this is serious rain forest. It also faces east so it is brightest and most pleasant in the morning or early afternoon. Then it is shaded by the towering mountains on all sides. Kayak and SUP rentals at the waterfront park if you go in summer.

The Dyke Trail is dead flat for biking and walking and is incredibly beautiful. You can stroll or bike all the way from Richmond to the village of Steveston at the southern end along the tidal lowlands facing out onto the Pacific Ocean. A great place for families or a romantic stroll for a few hours or a whole day. Make Steveston a destination, it is an old fishing village that has been transformed into a wonderful neighbourhood of shops, cafes, restaurants, and galleries. A bit touristy, but in a good way. If you are fan of the TV series "Once Upon a Time" Steveston will look familiar to you as it is where the series is filmed.

One of three local ski mountains overlooking the city of Vancouver, Grouse is the closest to downtown and great for hiking outside of the ski season. If you are super fit, do the "Grouse Grind", a hike up the side of the mountain to the summit beneath the tram. Or take the tram to the top and enjoy your coffee waiting for those who wish to do the 1 hour punishing (but beautiful) climb. There are shops and places to eat or drink at the top, year round. In the winter, this is also the only outdoor skating rink in Vancouver and it is atop the mountain overlooking the city. Locals and tourists alike enjoy Grouse mountain for summer hiking atop the mountain or winter skiing above the lights of the city.

The highest vertical skiing in all of North America on the dual mountains of Whistler-Blackcomb. A large and well established village with loads of accommodation, shops, restaurants right at the foot of the slopes. This is a premier global ski destination in winter, and a fantastic place for a day (or more) in the summer when you can mountain bike, hike, swim and enjoy the hot summer experience of off-season Whistler. We love the summer as much as the winter up here.

Arts & Culture

A great spot to spend a few hours, either on your own or with kids. The displays are always changing, and there is a lot of Vancouver history in the permanent installations. We live here and we still go to check it out once or twice a year as it is a serene place to spend a rainy day and we always learn something new about the history and culture(s) of our amazing city. Sometimes you will see school or small tour groups here, but it never feels particularly crowded and doesn't seem to be on the usual tourist track.

An incredible neighbourhood - Granville Island is a collection of shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, independent vendors, book stores, live theatre & music venues - all mixed in with marine stores, a bit of old industry, and many locals and tourists. Vancouverites LOVE Granville Island, even though tourists flock here. It is home to Vancouver's largest public market and no matter if you live here or you are a tourist you just can't help but love this converted industrial warehouse island that is now the heartbeat of the city. You can stroll for hours in either direction along the shoreline too and the views across the water to downtown are amazing. Take the tiny False Creek Ferry to get around the harbour, the boats hold a handful of people, and have many stops - it is a charming part of Vancouver's public transit system used by many locals.

The city's main Art Gallery with large permanent and rotating exhibitions. Housed in the original Vancouver courthouse right in the middle of downtown. The Art Gallery Cafe is also a fantastic place to enjoy a light lunch, beer, or glass of wine on a sunny afternoon - it is a surprisingly well kept secret on the south facing steps of the Art Gallery, many people do not know this little oasis of sun and relaxation is there!

Another of Vancouver's true city neighbourhood strips, Kitsilano (like Kerrisdale, Dunbar, and Point Grey) was once a small village that now is in the heart of the city's Westside. Many independent shops, cafes, and restaurants stretch along West 4th Avenue heading west from Burrard to Balsam. You can spend a whole day here, or pop down anytime - it is 5 minutes from our house by car or 5-10 on a city bus.

Kerrisdale Village is the heart of our neighbourhood - several blocks of independent restaurants, cafes, book stores, wine stores, clothing boutiques, small farm fresh fruit/vegetable stores, and everything in between. All within a 5 minute walk of our home, Kerrisdale Village runs along West Boulevard and West 41st Avenue, which intersect each other. There is also a community centre with a pool and workout facilities for drop in use, and the Kerrisdale Play Palace (in the Kerrisdale arena) which is heaven for young kids on rainy days with massive bouncy castles, trampolines, etc. Such a great neighbourhood and not even remotely on the tourist track! You can walk 5 minutes up the street or take the Arbutus Greenway to walk 10 minutes along the rural feeling trail behind our house up to the village. The Greenway was once a railway line that was abandoned many years ago and now serves as a foot and bike path to connect many of the neighbourhoods throughout the Westside of Vancouver. A piece of the country cutting through the middle of the city!

The UBC campus is among the iconic university campus settings in the world. Surrounded on 3 sides by cliffs that drop to the Pacific Ocean and with miles of trails through old growth forest on the land-side in Pacific Spirit Park. Another of Vancouver's true city neighbourhood strips, Main Street was once a small working class village that now is in the heart of the city. Main Street was historically the dividing line between the upmarket neighbourhoods of Vancouver's Westside and the more modest working class neighbourhoods of East Van. The dividing line has blurred over the past few decades and Main Street is a great strip with many independent shops, cafes, and restaurants stretch several city blocks in two pockets: along Main, between 33rd and 23rd, and again from about 18th down to about 6th. If you continue further north toward downtown you will walk right into the edge of the Olympic Village neighbourhood which connects to downtown via the sea wall walking trail. If you are up for a drive and something completely different, go 100km south into Washington State and spend an afternoon or evening exploring Bellingham, and particularly the Fairhaven neighbourhood. In the mid-1800's Fairhaven was a boom town as it was rumoured to become the main Northwest port city, although that fate went to Seattle leaving Fairhaven as a place preserved in time. Great restaurants, farmers market (check days during summer), bookstores, shops, etc. We love it here and it is a worthwhile day trip or a stop if you are heading to/from Seattle. This is roughly the halfway point.

The best of the three local ski mountains in the city of Vancouver. Cypress has reasonably big-mountain terrain when they have enough snow to cover the more challenging slopes in winter. Many of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic ski events were held at Cypress (although everyone billed it as Whistler on TV!). It is only 30 minutes from downtown in traffic and the views of the city and over the back side up Howe Sound are staggering on clear days. There is also summer hiking although we enjoy it most in winter. Very family friendly, very beautiful.
