escape manhattan

have you spent any time in brooklyn? a walk over one of the 3 bridges from lower manhattan take you 3 different areas. brooklyn bridge drops you near brooklyn heights where you can walk along the promenade, the manhattan bridge takes you to DUMBO, a formerly industrial area that’s now too expensive for ordinary people to live in, but has nice cafes and a killer view of manhattan. and the williamsburg bridge takes you back in time, to an area that is split between hipsters, orthodox jews and latinos. i grew up in nyc, but nowadays prefer brooklyn, as a lot of cultural stuff has moved there since NYC got too expensive. These days, brooklyn is the place to be! carol gardens is a mainly a residential area, but the shops on smith and carol streets which run parallel, give you a sense of what new york was like before. you will still find shoe repairs, hardware stores, pizza places still run by italians.

drinks and music

nightlife is a young persons sport, so i cannot make suggestions for the latest and greatest clubs, but there are a few places i return to over and over. if you don’t mind being 20 years older than anyone, drop in on PIANOS, a former piano shop on ludlow street in lower east side. i also love arthur’s on grove street in the west village (take the 1 train from 42nd and 7th to christopher street). it’s a jazz piano bar that’s quite crowded on weekends, and usually amazing! please note, there’s no cover, but a two drink minimum. next door and just down a few stairs in marie’s crisis cafe, which is the most fun and friendly gay bar i’ve been to, where everyone sings along to show tunes. my favorite locals, beer culture is comfortable, and a short walk home. just around the corner on 9th ave at 44th, RUDY’s, is a dive bar (that means a dirty little hole in the wall) with the cheapest beer and shot around plus free hot dogs. the pocket, on 48th and 10th, is very tiny, predominantly gay, and super fun and friendly.
