Hiking boots, walking sticks, water, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and food bars. This is a challenging hike and not for those with health issues to include knee pain, back pain, heat sensitivity, asthma or respiratory issues, vertigo, fear of heights. This is for the serious and fit hikers. No dogs allowed. Kids will love the nature center and crafts.

Off the 10 FWY at the windmills is the Whitewater Preserve. You cross over the raging whitewater and a short drive up the road you are at the Preserve. Pack a picnic, bring your kiddos in their bathing suits. There is a fun splash pool. I suggest water shoes. Dogs ok. Hike to the whitewater and wade in the trickling streams. Sunscreen, old shoes you don't mind to get wet and dirty, hats, sunglasses, sunglasses. Super family fun! picture worthy.

Joshua Tree National Monument is a must see when you visit our desert. Off the 10 FWY and the 62, turn right at Park. This is a national park so your park passes apply here. These amazing boulder formations will make you see God at His handy work. Many hiking trails, all easy to moderate available throughout the park. Pack a picnic and eat under the boulder formations. Tent camping is fantastic as the stars are plentiful. RV camping also found here. Fires are ok being it's in the middle of the desert so bring marshmallows. Bring hiking boots, walking sticks, lots of water, food, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. You MUST check in with the Ranger as you enter as you will be looked for if you do not exit. They take this very seriously. Do NOT touch the Joshua Trees or cactus. Do NOT take anything out of this park as it is sacred Indian Territory. No Dogs. Kids must be watched carefully because there are lots of hazards to include, rocks, cactus and rattle snakes. But super fun and a must see.

Travel down HWY 111, turn left at Monterey/74 and enjoy the ride up 74. SugarLoaf Mountain Cafe at the top has excellent food and so does the diner, I think it's called Paradise at the Anza/Temecula split. Idyllwild is up the mountain, through Gardenerville with it's picturesque horse properties, past Lake Hemet which is a fun place to camp or just go out to the lake for the day. Past Hurkey Creek on the right, great for camping. The town features great restaurants and shops. Also, stay a night at the BlueBird Lodge for a very reasonable price. Make sure to stop at the ranger station in town to get a pass to go up the road and go hiking to the bottom of Taquitiz Rock. Dogs allowed in town and infant was voted the most dog friendly town. But not not he trails.

This is a fun zoo and gardens that is family fun as well as offering hiking, food and souvenirs. At 10am they start Giraffe feeding which is a MUST! Their enclosure is vast and natural and allows for great pictures. Cheetah run is super fun to watch these two full grown Cheetahs race across their space. Big Horn Sheep show up everyday to be fed along the mountain and seem to pose for pictures. Village Watutu has a fun petting zoo and picnic area to buy food. Also, not well advertised is the big cat that roams here and camels. Animal shows go on regularly and are fun and educational. A tram can take you around if you have small children of can't walk well. There is a Vet Hospital on the grounds that you can tour. Bird aviary you can walk through. Desert Gardens to roam through. Indian areas you can actually walk through and educate yourself on the local tribes that lived there. Educational centers for the kiddos. Play area for kids as well as a carousal. Must see!

Up HWY 74 and pull into the Vista Point. See the amazing valley floor for free! Please be very careful on 74 and crossing that road. Many fatalities have occurred on this road and at this point. You will understand when you are there why. Use your signals, be patient and be very watchful.
