This beautiful protected national park consists of many beautiful trails, some farm style restaurants, and beautiful waterfalls such as Javira Waterfall, El Cubano Waterfall, Salto del Caburni and my favorite the Vegas Grande Waterfalls. There are also stables and opportunities for horseback riding. If you hike to El Cubano from Trinidad, you'll clock up a total of approximately 16km. With a stop for lunch in the ranchón , it can make an excellent day trip. Alternatively, for CUC$25/each Lucia can arrange horses with a guide to take you to one of the beautiful waterfalls on a day long excursion.

The bicycle ride to Playa Ancón is a great outdoor adventure, and once there you can snorkel, catch some rays or use the swimming pool or Ping-Pong table. The best route by far is via the small seaside village of La Boca (18km one way). this is not for everyone, but most will love this, you must be ok riding a a bike for about an 1hr or more but the beautiful scenes and relax ride is definitely worth it.

If you want to enjoy a nice quiet relaxing time at the beach, then definitely head here. There are guys who rent snorkels by the coastline just outside of La Boca, for only $3/day.

Valley de los Ingenios or Valley of the Sugar Mills, is a series of three interconnected valleys about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) outside of Trinidad, Cuba. The three valleys, San Luis, Santa Rosa, and Meyer, were a centre for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century. there is a beautiful classic steam train that takes tourists on a day long trip from Trinidad ($10/pp) through the sugar cane valley's. This is a very relaxing choice of activity if you like to have a nice relaxing day.

Esquerra is not the restaurant I want to recommend, but secret little spot right next door to it is a bar/restaurant called CUBA LIBRE, my "secret" favorite bar/restaurant in town, looks like a small italian bar from front, but it has a fantastic rooftop patio not many know about, and an absolute gorgeous lunch room at the back courtyard decorated with beautiful photos of old movie stars like Sophia Loren and old furniture... the food is very good for lunch and not bad for dinner if you have dinner in the patio is well worth it. The bar serves fantastic cocktails and drinks, along with best coffee and BEST desserts/ icecreams in town! their icecreams are all natural and come from Cienfuegos, very inexpensive. definitely go here for at least the ice cream and coffee, you will love it.

Arts & Culture

A beautiful mansion that belonged to the Borrell family from 1827 to 1830. Later the building passed to a German planter named Kanter, or Cantero, and it's still called Casa Cantero. Reputedly, Dr Justo Cantero acquired vast sugar estates by poisoning an old slave trader and marrying his widow, who also suffered an untimely death. Cantero's ill-gotten wealth is well displayed in the stylish neo classical decoration of the rooms. The view of Trinidad from the top of the tower alone is worth the price of admission. Visit before 11am, when the tour buses start rolling in.

No Santería museum can replicate the ethereal spiritual experience of Regla de Ocha (also known as Santería, Cuba's main religion of African origin), though this house has a try with a Santería altar to Yemayá, Goddess of the Sea, laden with myriad offerings of fruit, water and stones. The house is presided over by santeros (priests of the Afro-Cuban religion Santería), who'll emerge from the back patio and surprise you with some well-rehearsed tourist spiel. On the goddess's anniversary, March 19, ceremonies are performed day and night.

Perhaps the most recognizable building in Trinidad is the dilapidated pastel-yellow bell tower of the former convent of San Francisco de Asís. Since 1986 the building has housed a museum with photos, maps, weapons and other objects relating to the struggle against the various counter revolutionary bands that took a leaf out of Fidel's book and operated illicitly out of the Sierra del Escambray between 1960 and 1965. The fuselage of a US U-2 spy plane shot down over Cuba is also on display. You can climb the bell tower for some fantastic views above the beautiful city.
