Transportation

There are two modes of public transportation in Barbados: state-owned buses (big blue buses) and PSV’s (big yellow buses & [small yellow / white and purple vans] – ZR’s). We recommend that you take the state-owned buses. The fare for all modes public transportation in Barbados is $3.50 per person, one-way. They run to schedule along the major routes. https://www.transportboard.com/route-finder/ We do not recommend the other busses as they can be an experience in themselves, with lots of music and colourful staff.

Security & Safety

Barbadians are famously friendly and love to assist visitors but take the same precautions you would in an unfamiliar destination. Do not take valuables or travel documents with you to the beach. Put your phone or tablet on vibrate and lock them away before going for a swim. Avoid swimming at secluded beaches. If you do not see others around, have a quick look around, take some pictures, and get back in your car. When driving through the island do not stop to give strangers a ride in your vehicle. If you have to stop and ask for directions make sure your doors are locked before stopping.

Security & Safety continued

If you get lost look for bus stops that say “to town” and follow them. When using public transport take out your bus fare in advance and secure your purse/wallet. When going out at night go and return by taxi if the area is poorly lit or unfamiliar. Bridgetown (the capital) is quiet after dark so best avoided at night. Secure your doors and windows before going to bed. Do not take strangers home with you. Always ask if the rate is in US Dollars or local Barbados Dollars (exchange rate is 2 Barbados for 1 US Dollar) establish the price for the entire journey before getting into the taxi.
