Sightseeing

I'm not usually into visiting stately homes but the Pavilion is different. The Brighton we know came about because of the Prince Regent and his obsession with this crazy building. It's not some dusty palace it's whimsical, flamboyant and charming just like the town that's grown around it. It looks great from the outside but lots of the best bits are inside, there's also a lovely tea room on the first floor which makes a nice rest stop.

Drinks & Nightlife

A really nice little pub just at the top of the road. good Harvey's (best local brewery) and decent wine. The food is really good here, whether it's a bowl of chips or a full Sunday lunch.

2 minutes walk away - through waterloo Arch and along Cross St. the Robin hood used to be a truly horrible rough pub, it was taken over a few years ago and now it's a lovely, nosey, friendly pub with good food and beer. All profits go to local community charities too.

A great traditional pub, 5 minutes walk away. Spread over three floors with lots of little nooks and crannies. The Lion & Lobster is an old traditional pub stuffed full of odd local curios (including some of the locals). The food is also very good.

Food Scene

Tiny restaurant just around the corner, excellent locally caught fish. "The Little Fish Market is passionate about offering fresh, high quality, sustainable foods from the sea. Recently transformed from fishmonger and eatery, to exquisite fish restaurant, The Little Fish Market is owned and managed by Duncan Ray". Not cheap but very good.

5 minutes walk away, one of the best regarded restaurants in Brighton. Very good but book well in advance at weekends. The "original Gingerman site which opened in 1998. A small, intimate restaurant close to Brighton’s seafront, our philosophy is to create uncomplicated, full-flavoured food, made from the freshest, highest quality seasonal produce".

Best local fish & chips - just up on Western Road heading into Brighton. You can sit in or take away, it's not especially fancy but the food is really fresh and the quality excellent. They won the "National Fish & Chip" award for 2016. We like to get a take away and then walk down and eat it on the beach - Yummy!

Just up on Western Road (turn left at the top). Excellent Croissants, fresh bread and lots of delicious treats you didn't mean to buy. Try their 'almond bites' with a coffee.

Really good sit-in or take-away pizza. Very authentic and just around the corner - go to the top of the road, turn right through Waterloo Arch and there it is in front of you. Perfect to have at home or down on the beach.

Best coffee on the beach. If you heading down with or without kids, this little cafe in an arch by the playground is a good stop for a snack and a coffee. Also very good is the Bandstand Cafe - right under the Bandstand.

If you walk right along the lawns and then a little bit further, Marrocco's looks like as though it's been beamed back from the sixties. Park your Lambretta outside and have a Cappuccino or one of their famous homemade ice creams. On a summer weekend you'll find a long queue outside for the ice-cream but it's not a bad place to stand in a queue (nice sea view). It's become more of a restaurant than a caff over the last few years but the traditional Italian cooking is excellent.

Great fresh seafood right on the beach. Right between the piers on the beach, have a dozen oysters and a bottle of Champagne and wander on into the Lane or stay and have a whole meal. If it's nice weather sit outside otherwise turn up early and offer to wait at the bar for one of the window tables upstairs. Worth phoning before you go as it gets booked up.

My favourite restaurant in The Lanes right now. Share a large platter of meat, fish or veg based organic treats. They also do excellent individual mains if you think sharing is going to cause strife. Organic food and wine is a big part of their philosophy. Downstairs is a really excellent informal cocktail bar. Book ahead at the weekends.

Great fish and chips (or a bit posher) with a fantastic view. This is a great place to take the family, the food is good and reasonably priced and you have a great view of the sea, the i360 and the old West Pier. Very child friendly and they'll usually find somewhere to cram you in. It's also a very easy 10 minutes walk from the house.

This is my absolute favourite place to buy fish. It's a hut on the beach just beyond the King Alfred Leisure Centre. Open 9am - 3pm (usually) and manned by the most helpful and knowledgable fishwife you'll ever meet. The fish is the freshest you'll find, she'll prepare it for you and tell you the best way to cook it if you want. The prices are also excellent.

Parks & Nature

A lovely partly wooded park just 10 minutes walk from the house - really just head up the hill inland and you can't miss it. There's a nice big playground, cafe and even a scented garden. My kids went to school next to the park and we spent hours here in the afternoons. It's also an excellent and popular dog walking park.

If you walk down towards the beach but turn left before crossing the main road you'll come to Brunswick Square - it's literally round the corner. The square is almost always nice and quiet, residents have picnics and kids parties here or just lie on the grass and read. It's open to all but maybe most people don't realise that. No dogs allowed though.

If you want to get out of town and see a bit of the South Downs, Devil's Dyke is a very easy drive or better still you can take an open top bus from the Seafront (77). Fantastic views and a pretty horrible pub at the top, you can however walk down to the Royal Oak in the village of Poynings that does great food and has a huge beer garden - you can cheat and drive down.

Entertainment & Activities

Well you've come to Brighton, you've got to take a stroll around the pier. Some of the rides are pretty good but almost all the food is to be avoided, candy floss excepted - you can't really muck up spun sugar. You can just turn up and pay for your rides but there's also a wristband system you can buy in advance, so if you or your kids really love a ride have a look on line.

The Sea Life Centre is right next to the Palace Pier. It's bigger than you might expect and has a nice mix of old victorian architecture (Eugenics Birch who also designed the West Pier). And modern aquarium complete with plexiglass tunnel through the main tank. My kids always loved coming here, my thirteen year old daughter still does. It's well worth looking for special offers or coupons, SeaLife is part of Merlin Entertainments that also runs Chessington, Thorpe Park etc. and they always have some of promotion going on. Get's very busy on a rainy bank holiday.

Just along the Western Road heading into Brighton this is the nearest proper supermarket, with fresh meat counter, deli, bakery etc. Also quite good for celeb spotting - I've jostled Nick Cave and Kate Blanchett in the veg aisle.
