A Belle Époque for African-American Cooking "Those roots are on display even more prominently at the Cecil, where the flavors of Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean and Asia merge in dishes like gumbo, beef suya on skewers, oxtail dumplings and a collard-green salad with spiced cashews and coconut dressing. 'It’s always been a rallying cry for me,' said Alexander Smalls, the chef, entrepreneur and social powerhouse behind The Cecil. 'The idea that black folks cooking are only making soul food is frightening. What we have to say is much bigger than that. It’s our job to expand the conversation. People need to be enlightened.' Joseph Johnson, the executive chef at the Cecil and Minton’s in Harlem, spent a month doing research in Ghana before the Cecil opened in 2013. 'I came back here a changed man,' said the chef, who goes by JJ."

Elegant beautiful setting for an intimate hearing of superb jazz with delicious food! Staff are warm and welcoming. We enjoyed the signature gumbo dish, with a starter terrific salad, but really flipped out over the collard greens with peanuts side. The desserts were likewise gourmet delectable - different, Southern inspired and not too sweet. We had the cobbler with biscuit crust and the pecan creation - subtle, not cloying. Oh yes, the biscuits! Don't miss those! Ahhhh! Served with whipped maple butter! A must. There did not appear to be a lot of weekend parking on the street, but there was a convenient parking garage on the next block. This historic Jazz club is a delight!

Saxophonist Bill Saxton always dreamed of owning a jazz club in his home neighborhood of Harlem. Three years ago he achieved that dream, when he and his wife, Dr. Theda Palmer Saxton, opened Bills Place, on W. 133rd Street. What he didnt know at the time was that the space was once home to a speakeasy where the likes Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Fats Waller performed. incredible Harlem jazz experience
