Not cheap but has been good quality, and good food, - it has been incredibly busy since reopening after lockdown. The pub is now fully open (as of April 2023) but you need to book for eating on Weekends. this pub has recently been sold after the excellent refurbishing by Julian Dunkerton and run by his gastro pub group - the Lucky Onion - and is now part of Youngs Pub Co. - the excellent main front of house service person and head chef are gone, but the service and food quality remain high.

Not just a great cosy café using it's home produced organic dairy products, but also a great dairy shop, sells loose milk, cream, eggs and more with zero plastic packaging. Rumoured to be a favourite of certain long running radio soap actors.

The Kitchen does wonderful cakes and perfectly good lunches with excellent quiches etc. The main reason locals love it is the amazing Assumpta, an owner and front of house manager who is a real bundle of enthusiastic and welcoming energy.

Chavenage has to be visited on a Sunday afternoon in season, (May - September) But the owner, David Lowsley-Williams, provides the best guided tours imaginable at 2:00 on those Sundays - see their web site for why most people go there... http://www.chavenage.com/

Damian Hirst and many others have cast their large bronze sculptures at the Pangolin foundry here. The gallery is a benevolent contribution to culture and often has wonderful 1st class sculpture exhibitions -

tourist central but if you can avoid high season, still a most delightful bridged river through the centre of the village, and on a weekday in Spring you might be able to park nearby.

beautiful classic Cotswold village built around a lovely little river - less touristy than Bourton but with good places to stop and eat.

It would be a miracle if you saw the famous Arlington Row cottages at Bibury without some tourists walking the path shown - but it is well worth a visit, and the Trout farm and other parts of the place on the river make it a delightful Cotswold cliché.

Entertainment & Activities

currently a great chef, reliable, including vegan/veggie choices, great location for views as it is slap bang in the middle of the high common. We recommend - as with all venues since Lockdown began - ringing and checking availability.

The races, Gigs at the Town Hall, Everyman theatre, Shopping, The Georgian Architecture, the Literary festival, loads of other events, plenty of good pubs and restaurants, and Simpsons Fish & Chips is voted one of the best in Britain.

Nice little theatre that gets a lot of the best stand up comedians, obviously the need to know and book in advance is big, as these gigs sell out not long after going on sale.

for the golfer, the New course is a modern refined 18 hole course, but the old course is more like a links but inland, with natural hazards but no sand or water. The natural hazards include cows in the summer months and dog walkers but the common is so delightful that a five mile walk with the clubs is well worth the occasional wait for the wildlife to move on...

It is on our doorstep and I enjoy walking round it every week of the year. The "big sky" views are magnificent and the Iron age quarry works and ancient landscape also hold a 125 year old golf course where maneuvering the cows can be a part of the game. (there is the new course on the other side of Gatcombe for those who like pristine golf without cow poo). At the Rodborough end of the common there is "the Fort" currently owned and hugely renovated by Dale Vince, the owner of Ecotricity and chair of local league 2 football club, Forest Green Rovers. On a fine day you can share his views down the hill over Stroud and across to the black mountains of Wales in the distance.

Shopping

Waitrose for certain things, down the Hill this side of Stroud, Sainsbury's for other things - down the other side of the hill, bit further away. Morrisons for the occasional convenient thing - nearer, just down the hill in Nailsworth... (apart from the local corner shop, every food store is down a hill)

Everything Else

North or southbound, the new Motorway services model may still be expensive, but these green and awake places (like the M6 sister outlet in Cumbria) concentrate on a great range of organic food and other products that you would be proud to take to a deserving relative. Because it's so close to us we don't tend to go much, but it's great if you are hitting the M5 and need to pick up some exciting produce, for yourself or others - as well as being the first motorway services that are actually pleasant to sit in or walk around.
