La Cueva (“The Cave”) is a favorite weekend spot for locals and the venturesome tourists that get wind of it by word of mouth. The cavernous disco is located on the northern outskirts of town, about a 10-minute walk up a hill away from the center of Trinidad, an old Spanish colony that feels even more preserved in time than the rest of Cuba.

One of Trinidad's (and Cuba's) classic venues, this casa is an alfresco affair that congregates on the sweeping staircase beside the Iglesia Parroquial off Plaza Mayor. A good mix of tourists and locals take in the 10pm salsa show here. Alternatively, full-on salsa concerts are held in the casa's rear courtyard

Valley of the Sugar Mills, is a series of three interconnected valleys about 7.5 miles outside of Trinidad, Cuba. The three valleys, San Luis, Santa Rosa, and Meyer, were a center for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century. At the peak of the industry in Cuba, there were over fifty sugar cane mills in operation in the three valleys, with over 30,000 slaves working in the mills and on the sugar cane plantations that surrounded them.

The buildings surrounding the plaza (central square) date from the 18th and 19th centuries when trade in sugar from the nearby Valle de los Ingenios and the slave trade brought great riches to the area. Many of the buildings surrounding the plaza belonged to the wealthy landowners of the city. When the trade in sugar diminished and the slave trade ended in the mid-19th century, Trinidad became a backwater and little building work occurred until the 1950s. As a result, many of the historic buildings and streets were preserved, especially the grand colonial edifices in the immediate vicinity of the Plaza Mayor. Today, most of the former houses surrounding the square serve to house museums.

Entertainment & Activities

This beach is right in La Boca. It is not a sand beach and has no amenities. The beach is small stones and crushed shell. It is at the mouth of a river so the water is very shallow. Very few people use the beach. It is a great place just to take a dip on a hot day if you are staying in a local casa; but not a place to spend the day or snorkel.

Playa Ancon is a nice beach with white sand and calm water, great for sun bathing or a refreshing swim. There is a snack bar where you can order sandwiches, burgers, ice cream and drinks. The public washroom is a complete disaster especially as the day goes on. If you pay $2cuc you can use the Playa Ancon Hotel palapa and their hotel washroom, which is much better. If you are in a pinch and have not rented a palapa, just head to the back of the lobby in the Playa Ancon Hotel and look left of the front desk to locate the washroom, I have used them many times and never been stopped. There are taxis in the parking lot at the public beach (next to snack bar) to take you back to Trinidad for $8
