Parks & Nature

Just up the street from our house, about 1/2 mile, is the entrance to a managed forest which backs right up to the park. Hundreds of acres of trails, great views, lots of green. If you want to drive around to Carnation, you can visit the bottom of the park, which is the home to the Timber Music Festival in mid-July. In the summer this can be a good place to put in with a boat to float to Duvall or points further on.

An iconic hike, often quite busy. Challenging, but the views are stunning. Well worth the trip, best on weekdays.

One of my favorite hikes. The trail follows a beautiful stretch of river, through deep forest, to a stunning double waterfall. The hike to the waterfall and back to the trail head is around 3 miles, though the steep sections might have you thinking it is longer. This hike was 'discovered' by the populace several years ago, and now can get quite busy on the weekends.

Quiet, Peaceful, good hike. You spend most of the hike in the woods, though you cross the river at one point and reach the waterfall if you go far enough and always stick to the right. Pay attention when you're coming back to follow your path, or you could get lost in the woods. The waterfall at the end of the trail drops right into a wonderful swimming hole, perfect for a hot day. But the trail is also lovely in the winter. On rainy days you don't get hit quite so much as if you're out in the open.

If you're going to be in Snoqualmie, and you like water falls, it's always worth stopping here, especially after it's been raining, when the waterfall can be quite impressive. The water flow is managed for the hydroelectric plant. For a pleasant short hike take the trail down to the river. It isn't long, but it can be a bit steep if you're not used to hiking.

This is another really beautiful hike, further out, through well established forest. In the summer it can be insanely crowded, but there's a reason: the water slide. It's so fun to ride the river without a boat, thousands of people do it every year. If you're going on a hot summer day, take your patience with you. But even if the crowds scare you away the rest of the hike is just lovely.

Another beautiful waterfall, relatively easy hike. Puts you out on Highway 2, so you're close to a bunch of other great hikes and viewpoints. But Wallace Falls by itself is a good destination, as is the lake.

These are just the coolest falls. They are right off the road, so it's not a big hike situation, but it is definitely worth the stop if you're driving this way.

Even though you're in the middle of a conservation area, these feel like very suburban trails. It's pretty, popular, good exercise. Can be crowded on the weekends.

This park is close to Ames Lake, and has several easy trails through beautiful, established forest. Visit in late spring to see the lupin fields!
