A godsend for couples embarking on their first jobs, the Little Bay restaurants – there’s a branch in Croydon too – offer romantic settings and serviceable bistro food without the passion-killing prices. The Kilburn restaurant is actually located between Maida Vale and West Hampstead, where low prices, cosy booths, crimson interiors and candle-topped wine bottles (down which the obligatory wax cascades) have been attracting the area’s smoochers for 25 years. Choose a set menu or early-evening deal and it’s possible to have three courses of French-accented cooking for around a tenner.
