Bir pagan tapınağının temelleri üstüne kurulmuş Aya İrini'nin İstanbul'daki ilk Hıristiyan mabedi olduğu sanılmaktadır. 4. yy'da Hıristiyanlığa geçen ilk Roma İmparatoru I. Constantin'in emriyle inşa edilmiştir. 6. ve 8. yy'larda yenilenen kilise, Osmanlı'da cephane ve müze olarak kullanılmıştır.
