Goodrich stands majestically on a wooded hill commanding the passage of the River Wye into the picturesque valley of Symonds Yat. The castle was begun in the late 11th century, by the English thegn Godric who gave it his name.

Goodrich Castle is set along the banks of the River Wye just across the border in England. It is one of the best preserved of all English medieval castles. There are spectacular views from the battlements and tower, it also has a good tearoom.

Goodrich Castle, seen in the distance from the tipis, is a Normal Medieval Castle & English Heritage Site. The castle is home to the 'Roaring Meg', the only surviving Civil War mortar.

A beautiful castle with outstanding views

A Norman medieval castle ruin north of the village of Goodrich. Shop and cafe and headphones can be hired to hear the history of the castle. It is believed to hav been built by Godric of Mappestone after the Norman Invasion of England, initially as an earth and wooden fortifaction.
