It would be best to visit when there are no cruise liners in as often coach trips fill the site during these times. The Broch of Birsay is quite close and you could visit there whilst waiting for a quieter time at Skara Brae. The Broch is accessed by a path that is only accessible when the tide is out. Check tide times. Good beaches and rocks to explore too.
