彦根城 Hikone-jo castle is located near the biggest lake in Japan called Biwa lake. The castle has been maintained its original style since Edo era, the period of time about 400 years ago. There is a pretty cat character of Hikone-jo called Hikonyan, so please also check it out there.

Hikone is a small city at the shores of Lake Biwa. It is famous for its castle. Hikone makes a pleasant 3-6 hour stop-over on a trip between Tokyo and Kyoto, or it could be just a side trip from Kyoto. Yume Kyobashi Castle Road located just outside Hikone Castle's outer moat, is a modern shopping street that has been recently redesigned to make it more castle-looking style with town houses from the Edo period with their white walls, black roofs and lattice doors. You can find boutiques, restaurants, cafes and even souvenir shops along the street.
