GET OUT INTO IT!! Vermont is ripe with amazing hikes. The Long-Trail, the regional hikes you have to be local (or friends with a local) to find, and of course the Appalachian Trail. You can do an hour-long loop, or spend three days hiking a section of the AT. No matter what, take a step on the famous cross-continental hike-way, and you can brag to your friends that you hiked the AT... Trailheads abound. My favorites are on Elm Street in Norwich for a nice little loop, or on Pomfret Road in Woodstock. Let me know if you are interested in hikes and I will pull maps for you! There are also lots of trails with waterfalls and swimming holes in the area!
