The Ijen volcano complex, is a group of volcanos in eastern Java set inside the world’s largest acidic crater lake. Known in Indonesia as the ‘mountain of fire’, the view of the deep blue greenish lake is astonishing, and even more so at night when the burning of sulphuric gases glow an ethereal blue colour.

One interesting option for nature tours in Indonesia is to touch the beauty of the Ijen Crater in East Java. The natural crater formed by the volcano eruption is the most beautiful crater owned by Indonesia because it has the phenomenon of blue fire, aka the blue fire. Not surprisingly, every weekend, the Ijen Crater area is often filled with tourists, both local and foreign. Geographically, the Ijen Crater area is included in three regencies in East Java, namely Situbondo, Bondowoso, and Banyuwangi. However, the main entrance to enter the location of Ijen Crater is in Paltuding, Banyuwangi. For tourists who don't want to spend the night on the mountain but want to witness the phenomenon of blue fire, the Kalipuro area is another option for staying overnight. From Kalipuro to Paltuding it takes about an hour to travel, or a distance of about 35 km. With an estimated trekking trip time from Paltuding to Ijen Crater it takes about 2 hours, so to be able to witness the blue fire phenomenon, tourists must start the journey from Kalipuro at around 1:30 am.

Since National Geographic mentioned the electric-blue flame of Ijen, tourist numbers increased.[citation needed] The phenomenon has occurred for a long time, but beforehand there was no midnight hiking. A two-hour hike is required to reach the rim of the crater, followed by a 45-minute hike down to the bank of the crater. The blue fire is ignited sulphuric gas, which emerges from cracks at temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius. We strongly advise our guests to start from home around midnight as it is about 40 mn to get there. The ticket office open at 1:00.
