At the center of the Place de la République is a 31 feet bronze statue of Marianne, the personification of the French Republican, "holding aloft an olive branch in her right hand and resting her left on a tablet engraved with Human Rights. The statue sits atop a monument which is 75 feet high. Marianne is surrounded with three statues personifying liberty, equality, and fraternity, the values of the French Republic.

Most of the people on the streets are local residents, with few passers-by, and the area is at its most lively in the evenings. It has remained faithful to its distinctive working class character, in an increasingly sanitized Paris. It is here that the small tree-lined Place Saint-Marthe is located, almost indistinguishable at the heart of a network of narrow roads. One of these, the Rue Saint-Marthe, with its laundry drying at the windows and Mediterranean flavor, is reminiscent of the roads of Naples or Marseille. Full of art and culture, and not merely photogenic, this is an animated locality, with bistros where you can sit outside, artists’ workshops, concerts, small designer stores, record shops, flea markets and unique restaurants offering culinary specialties from all over the world, for example, from Africa and South America.
