Colonel Chamberlain Suite

Dedicated to Colonel Chamberlain, this second floor Premium room with its upscale amenities and comfort has everything you need for a wonderful stay at The Swope Manor. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain a professor at Bowdoin College in Maine left teaching and enlisted in the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment. Chamberlain rose through the ranks and in August of 1862 he was promoted to Lt. Colonel and would lead his men during several engagements. During the course of the Civil War he would be wounded six times and rise to the rank of Brigadier General and Brevet Major General. For his gallantry and bravery at the battle of Gettysburg and his defense of the Union left flank on Little Round Top, Chamberlain was awarded the Medal of Honor. At the close of the war he was given the honor of commanding the Union troops during Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, Virginia. Chamberlain after the war became Governor of Maine and served as president to Bowdoin College.
