Our family always enjoys coming to Nickel cottage. The game room is always a big hit, with much time being spent playing ping pong and the little ones having age appropriate toys. As a teacher myself, I am impressed with all the children’s books and classic toys. How nice it is to have a family place to gather and have fun! We also enjoy the beautiful scenery and neighborhood cows. We even saw a baby calf with it’s momma. Our Christmas is very special indeed - much due to Grace and her personal care of our family. Her little extras mean so much to us, and we appreciate everything she does to make our stay special!

Our weekend girls' trip getaway to Susanne's pastoral family homeplace was absolutely wonderful, as this property is truly its own point of interest! While all bed/bath/kitchen provisions were top notch and well exceeded a typical amenity checklist, the thing that comforted us the most was a warm and open welcoming into the doors of this historic family home. From classic furnishings and sturdy wares, old photos and whimsical trinkets, interesting nooks and mysterious crannies, peaceful porch seating and delightful cow parades, abundant trees and beautiful flowers... we felt like we were right at home. Although we could have been perfectly content staying parked on the property our entire stay (and may plan to do just that for our next visit) we opted to enjoy a lovely drive for a day hike to a stunning waterfall in Shenandoah National Park, and went in to Charlottesville for some shopping on the pedestrian mall. We 100% recommend this historic property and Susanne's warm hospitality!

Absolutely stunning place! Its most definitely beautiful and worth the price. It’s also where I got married and I wouldn’t change a thing. I couldn’t have asked for a better host. Jim made sure I had everything I needed and checked in a few times to make sure everything was good. I would highly recommend for a micro-wedding or even a small event!! I was also left with flowers & a special card from the elmwood farm. Such a wonderful place.

Tracy was very welcoming, informative and accommodating. She was very available if we had any concerns. We were planning a boat trip on the lake and she helped coordinate a boat rental that led to a lovely day on the water. Her mom is cozy and tidy and we felt very comfortable there.

My family and I had a great stay at Monique and Stan’s place. They were so friendly and helpful and the house had everything we needed. The beds were super comfortable and plenty of space to spread out. The location was beautiful and my kids loved meeting their horses. We would love to go back when the pool is open. Thanks again!

A beautiful setting and a well appointed house, perfect for group gatherings. The lake at this end is very peaceful, lots of herons and geese, and the surrounding water and marshes are gorgeous to kayak through. Kitchen has everything you’d need for any range of possible meals. Beds very comfortable, bathrooms spotless and include soap/shampoo dispensers, and we loved having a range of seating areas. The hot tub is a really nice one! A few things that may be useful for future guests to pack or know: the dock and deck have no furniture if you want to pack beach chairs (we did). The water on this side is comparatively shallow but fine to put a pontoon or canoe in. We did wish for screen doors on the many large back doors to enjoy the breeze, but used the screened in porch for that. Don’t forget beach towels! The upstairs living room doesn’t have a TV, though the downstairs one is huge (this was fine for us but others may want to be aware when they pick bedrooms).

The house was a super clean and extremely comfortable home base for our hiking trip. It had everything we needed. Beautiful setting, too!

The home is lovely and peaceful. The layout is ideal and the rooms are very spacious. The kitchen is very well stocked for cooking your own meals and there was wood for fire which we used for the firepit on cold nights.

If I could give Jennifer’s place more than 5 stars I would! The property was at the end of a seasonal road so it was very quiet. Jennifer was nice enough to leave us some eggs from her chickens that were delicious. Great place to stay if you’re trying to get away from the city for some peace and quiet

Chanel was excellent at communicating and was so helpful in accommodating us for two extended stays.

My children and I loved our stay at the Franklin Estate! The suite was clean comfy and well appointed. Angela called me before I arrived to ensure I would have everything I need including a pack and play for my baby! My kids loved the pool! The entire property was well maintained and very beautiful. Angela kept in touch throughout our stay ensuring we were comfortable the entire time. I'm looking forward to staying again!

Jennifer’s place was amazing! A fully private guest house with tons of space and well stocked. Beautiful location and we were excited to use the hot tub. Would definitely stay again when visiting Shenandoah.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Escape Cabin — it was so much fun! The jacuzzi was amazing and ready for us when we arrived, and everything smelled great. We had brought our own linens, but we didn’t end up using them because everything was so clean and fresh. In the morning, we woke up to an amazing view with lots of animals. It was peaceful, fun, and had everything we needed for the weekend. The hosts were very informative before our stay, so we didn’t need any further instructions. We will definitely come back!

Our family of 9 spent a week here, and couldn't be happier. Our groups ages spread from 12 to 84, and every one of us had a great time. However beautiful this home and lake look in the photos - it is even more so in person. We had a blast kayaking and paddleboarding, and took a few day trips to the state park, battlefields, and monticello. We spent our mornings having coffee in the beautiful sunroom and evenings with wine overlooking the sunset on the lake. Fred and Gette were extremely accommodating when we realized how close we were to our aunt and added her on for Easter dinner at the last minute. Great communication as well - it was really just a wonderful experience all around.

Can’t beat the view! We loved being able to spend time in the lawn chairs each day. John was extremely communicative and friendly!

This is the third time I’ve stayed in this beautiful cabin. It’s always better than I remember. Squeaky clean, perfectly private, and dripping in charm and history. The house and property and absolutely perfect. My only hesitation in leaving a positive review is that I’m afraid I’ll have to share the property with others 🫣🤣.

Anna and Wik's place was a little slice of heaven on Earth. The expansive property was beautiful and extremely private and peaceful. Wik was exceptionally responsive and always checking in on us. Our kids woke every morning excited to go to one of the 3 ponds to fish. Wik noticed all the fishing we were doing and brought us some live bait! We caught lots of fish. We grilled out one night by the large pond while the kids fished and had a fire in the fire pit. During the afternoons we visited local wineries and towns (Orange and Gordonsville). There is lots to do in the area and everything seems to have a view! Highly recommend staying here. We hope to be back one day!

Great place to stay for a weekend getaway! The master bedroom had a large private deck looking out to the lake. We were unable to Kayak due to the weather, but had it not rained we would have really enjoyed that. Irene was very responsive to messages. The home was decorated with beautiful art and had lots of character! I would easily book this stay again.
