Description

Le logement

"...The home's door opens and the beauty floods your heart and overflows with the surprise of the “plateloticho” (the plate wall)! They are the hand painted plates, which accompanied the bride to her new home, with the big mirror in the middle and the family pictures. But why so many plates? With beauty there is no “why” – it just saves you!..."

"Serafi" home is found in Archangelos Rhodes (right next to "Tsampika" home). It is 70m2, open plan space with two double beds (in the type of wooden lofts) and a single one (wooden loft too) with Coco-Mat bed mattresses and pillows. The comfortable "soufas" is one of the distinctive features of the house.
The kitchen (fully equipped) is separate room connected to the main house and the courtyard. There is a large courtyard with elevated yard walls. It is full of aromatic herbs and flowers, exciting for children to play and for adults to relax. "Serafi" and "Tsampika" homes are ideal for hosting two friendly families.

The house was built at the start of the previous century, in the 1915s, in compliance with the traditional arch type architecture of Archangelos and renovated in 2012-13 by the original owner’s. It was done with absolute respect towards the “arch type” archangelic architecture. The house also operates as a folklore museum.

The public transport is frequent. Bus stop - 50m from the house. The bus will take you to the city of Rhodes and to many beautiful beaches such as Kalithea, Afandou, Kalathos, Lindos and, further south, like Prassonissi.

Guests can enjoy the great local beaches: "Tsampika", "St. Agatha" and "Stegna", all very close to the Archangelos (2 - 5km).

Traditional Restaurants, Supermarkets, Bank/ATM, Post office, Pharmacy, Communication Services, Health Center, Cafeterias are all available (50-200m. from the home). Everything is on a walking distance.

More details...

The "Serafi" home welcomes you when you enter the hospitable yard, which is full of aromatic herbs, and flowers and three domineering cypress trees reaching up to the sky, which are as old as the home.
The home stands harmoniously in the depths of the yard – simple, one bodied and stark white. The cornice is wrought in relief on the upper part of the façade and around the windows. Above the door the cross, along with the wrought in relief drainpipes and their winding finishes, they “embroider” the homes’ façade with nobility and moderation. Nothing is missing, nor is it superfluous; it is a reflection of the Hellenic culture's moderation and harmony – a "repose of the heart".
In the interior of the home, the “kamara”, (the arch), which parts the home in two, dominates harmoniously without distracting from its unity. Famed craftsmen of Archangelos built it with big hand cut stones and at its center, they wedged the “arch’s key” (a stone trapeze shape). The whole house rests on the “arch key”, symmetrically and is uniquely balanced! It is “arch” home, named after the Archangelic type of architecture..."

...This archangelic arch-type home, "Serafi", opened its door in the summer of 2014 to everyone who would like to familiarize themselves with it and experience it (even if it’s for a short time). They will feel the culture which this home carry within it and also what they exude.
The opening of this home to the people aims to render the unique cultural heritage of Archangelos Rhodes. But they will do it in a different way – by living for a week in a “home: live – folklore museum” and by participating in related activities.
During their stay, guests are invited to participate in a project specially designed to introduce them further to tradition and local customs:
"... living in a house - Folklore Museum".

It includes the following activities:
1. A tour to familiarize the guests with the “arch” type homes.
2. Lighting of the wood oven, baking traditional bread of Archangelos and local dishes.
3. Familiarization with Rhodes’ aromatic plants and herbs from the home's garden and creating cosmetics and ointments.

*The cultural project takes place from 1/7 until 30/8 and for the completion of this a minimum of seven days is required.

Le quartier

The neighborhood, called Serafi, is safe and quiet. The neighbors live there with their families for many years. We all know each other and are friendly . Often participate spontaneously in the cultural projects as shown in the photos.
Generally a particular characteristic that Archangelos possesses is its rich cultural heritage and the dedicated convergence of its inhabitants during local folk traditions up to date, despite the changes contemporary life has brought.

Autres remarques

*Guests can enjoy the great local beaches:
Tsampika (the best in Rhodes), St. Agatha and Stegna, all very close to Archangelos (2 - 5km).

*The traditional historical center of the village is found surrounding the church (of Archangel Micheal Taxiarxis, 1845) . The narrow whitewashed alleys, the small, traditional archangelic homes with their ornate gates and their wood burning ovens in the yards. The aroma of freshly baked bread every Saturday and the hospitable people of Archangelos, who keep the local voice and the customs of the village alive, all create a very warm atmosphere.

Beautiful hikes:
a) To the Knights Castle (15 minute journey from the path behind the church of Taxiarchis).

b) To the Stegna beach (one hour walking to the tiny beach of Archangelos with graphic port - The road coming back is uphill).

c) To the "Epta Piges" (seven springs - one hour and half walking or on horseback - through the path).

d) To the Ethona valley, which is full of water, orange, lemon and mandarin trees (one hour walking from the south exit of the village).

e) To the church of the Kyra (Lady Virgin Mary Tsampika - Ano Kyra tin Psili), on the top of the homonymous hill at 365 meters (car is necessary).

*The very active Cultural Association "Ethonas" in Archangelos organizes frequent cultural activities with an emphasis on local tradition, especially in the month of August. Important cultural events take place during Mardi Gras also.

*Very interesting is the non-profit organization “Faethon”, an Equestrian Club, which has gathered all the surviving small horses (they are living only at Rhodes) and has put forth a rescue effort for them.

*The religious festivals of Archangelos are celebrated with festivities accompanied by food and dance. The most well known feasts are on 8th November for the Archangel Micheal, on 8th September for the Virgin Mary Tsampika (the Virgin Mary's birthday), St. Marina's on 17th July and the Merciful Virgin or "Panagia Eleimonitria" on 23rd August (the Nine Days of the Virgin Sleep).

* Information on traditional restaurants with local dishes in the house's folder.

Thank you so much Charikleia we had a very great time and appreciate your kindness and hospitality !

Chariklia hosted us the nicest way. Her house is awesome! It was a timetravel for us with 3 kids. Archangelos is an authentic and friendly little village in Rhodes, and the best sites of the island are easily accessible from here with car as well.

Our stay at Serafi house was a unique and unforgettable experience. It is a very special place, you can feel the know of traditional greek way of life. For me and my family was the perfect place in Rhodes (it can´t be pay with money). Chariklia is a great person, good and friendly. She gave us many information about things to visit at Rhodes, even prepared for us handmade local bread. When we arrive Chariklia invited us to a revival of traditional wedding organized in Archangelos, where kids with traditional dresses did a funny performance, with musicians and dancers, we taste typical wedding sweets at Serafi house. I recommend to everybody that is looking for a peaceful and original accommodation at Rhodes this is a good place, and the best host. At walking distance there are supermarkets and taverns where taste greek food. And by car or scooter in a few minutes you can go to good beaches like Stegna, Tsambika…. We were very lucky to find this place and we had a wonderful holiday. Greetings from Sergio and Adela.

Our stay at the traditional Serafi home has been absolutely wonderful. The house has a warm and cosy atmosphere and Chariklia made us feel very welcome. When we arrived, she lit a candle, there were fresh grapes on the table and a traditional Greek bread awaited us in the kitchen. Chariklia gave us a folder with a map of Rhodes, information on the house (very interesting), and information on things to do in Rhodes. Chariklia is a very warm and caring person. We did her workshop in making skin products with the herbs from her garden. She put so much love and attention in it, it was wonderful to see. The place was very clean and had everything we needed. The bed linen and towels were super comfortable. There are little supermarkets within 2 minutes walking distance, as the place is situated very close to the centre. We would recommend getting a scooter to go to the nice beaches of Stegna or Tsambika. The place is a little smaller then it seemed on the pictures, but for us that was perfect. We would absolutely recommend this place to other people visiting Rhodes.

I am teacher of Theology and Environmental Education in high school and my special interest is the preservation of the cultural heritage of Greece. Μy favorite island is Rhodes, the birthplace of my family. I deal in particular with the study and preservation of the "arch type home" in Archangelos Rhodes.
"Serafi" and "Tsampika" arch homes have opened their doors since the summer of 2014 to everyone who would like to familiarize themselves with them and live the experience of a local (even if it is for a short time).
The opening of these homes to the people aims to render the unique cultural heritage of Archangelos - Rhodes. Our guests encounter this venture by living for a week in a home-folklore museum open to the people's life and by participating in related activities.
I love human diversity in culture, history, language ... and the warm hospitality that creates unity among us.
