À propos de ce logement

This gorgeous private apartment is on a beautiful block close to tons of restaurants, cafes, and the subway (A,C,G). The neighborhood is a mix of families, hipsters, and old school Brooklynites. Close to Park Slope, Williamsburg, and Ft. Greene!

Le logement

The apartment is completely private, has 2 separate bedrooms, a newly renovated kitchen, a newly remodeled bathroom, and a private terrace in the back yard. We've gone to great lengths in restoring our home, preserving as much of the original 19th century detail as possible, and modernizing where prudent.

*Bedroom 1*
This is the larger of the 2 bedrooms. It has an 82" long sleeper sofa (about a full sized bed), plenty of electrical outlets, and a fold-out mattress suitable for an adult up to 180cm tall, a chair, and a side table.

*Bedroom 2*
The smaller of the bedrooms features a queen-sized bed, a floor lamp, and a chair.

*Kitchen*
Features a kitchen nook with built-in banquette seating, stainless steel appliances, dishwasher, gas range, and a large refrigerator with ice maker.

*Bathroom*
Gut-renovated in December 2014. Has a 60" soaking tub, a new Toto toilet, and a compact wall-mounted sink with medicine cabinet.

*Yard*
Our back yard is the only one in New York city (to my knowledge) with a 15 foot tall Crossfit Rig. Please let me know if you'd like to work out on the ropes or the bars.

Accès des voyageurs

Guests have use of their own private terrace. There is also yard access at the discretion of the host.

*PLEASE NOTE*
THIS LISTING IS NOT SUITABLE FOR FILM SHOOTS OR EVENTS (eg: baby showers, birthdays, wedding receptions)

FAQ
----------------------------------------

*Is the apartment private?*
Yes, completely. It’s about 230 square meters (750 square feet), and has its own entrance, exit, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, living area, and terrace. You're free to share the yard, but we just ask that you don't smoke. My family frequently uses the balcony above the airbnb terrace, and my daughters play in the back yard.

*What is the neighborhood like?*
Bedford Stuyvesant ("Bedstuy") is a great place to raise a family, and a wonderful place to stay if you’re a traveler! It’s full of brownstones, tall trees, cafes and restaurants. Residents represent a cross-section of hipsters, blue collar workers, college-educated folks, and LOTS of young families. The neighborhood, which was built by the Dutch in the 17th century, is seeing a growing number of blocks earning architectural landmark status from the New York City landmark preservation commission.

*Are the streets safe to walk?*
My 5'2" wife walks to and from the subway at night time, and I'm perfectly ok with this. Also, my dad - who is a 72 year old pale-skinned white guy from Minnesota does just fine when he comes to visit, and has never been threatened. However, I don't recommend walking several blocks at night time past 2am if you’re alone - especially if you’ve been drinking. Remember, you’re in New York.

*Is there wifi?*
Yes, but there is no television.

*I’m allergic to animals. Do you have any pets?*
None. Not ever.

*How flexible is the check-in / check-out?*
Very. If there are no bookings in front of or behind you, I have no problems with letting people arrive early and leave late. We also have a lock box so that guests can help themselves to the keys. We change the combination after each guest leaves.

*How is the apartment laid out?*
Bedroom 1 is sandwiched between the kitchen and bedroom 2. It contains a queen sized bed, a floor lamp, and a chair. Bedroom 2 is a very large room that is mostly used as a sitting room (since we get a lot of bookings from groups of 2). This room contains a sleeper sofa, a chair, a side table, and a fold-out mattress. The sleeper sofa is brand new, and is about the size of a full sized bed. The fold-out mattress is a bit skinnier than a twin sized bed, and is suitable for a person up to about 180cm tall.

*Should I bring my own towels/sheets/toiletries?*
This isn’t necessary, but some people feel more comfortable doing this. We provide enough clean sheets, blankets, and towels for our guests. In the bathroom, you’ll find hand cloths, a bathmat, ample toilet paper, liquid body wash, a small container of shampoo, and some hand wash by the sink.

*What’s in the kitchen?*
There are several pots, pans, utensils, glasses, cups, wine glasses, a wine key, cutlery, a cutting board, and cooking essentials such as oil, salt, sugar, coffee, tea, etc. There’s also a few small tools like a French press, an electric tea kettle, and a wooden cutting board. We also stock a few snacks for each of our guests. Our gas range has 1 burner (left-front) whose pilot light no longer catches. If you really need to use all 4 burners, you can use a match to light that one. All the others operate normally.

*What should I do with my garbage and recycling?*
For small amounts of trash, just use the receptacles in the kitchen and bathroom. For large amounts, including messy to-go leftovers and pizza box containers, please throw these out in the large cans outside in the front area. Recycling can be placed in the containers below the kitchen sink.

*Can I use the back area and yard?*
Absolutely! We just ask that you be respectful, and observe the house rules. And to close and lock all of the doors and windows when you leave the apartment.

*How far is the house from major airports?*
7 miles from Laguardia airport, and 9 miles from JFK. If you plan on taking a service from the airport to the house, DO NOT TRUST A STRANGER AT THE AIPORT ASKING YOU IF YOU WANT A RIDE. These guys are not legit. If anything goes wrong, you have no legal recourse.

*What’s the closest subway stop?*
C train at Kingston/Throop. This location is about a 10 minute slow walk with luggage. Without luggage, I walk it in 6. If you take the C train, you will reach lower Manhattan in about 15 minutes.

*How is Uber in Brooklyn?*
Great. I recommend installing the app on your smart phone. On a normal night, you'll be able to get a car within 5 minutes.

*What’s parking like?*
Free street parking is great in the neighborhood. 95% of the time, I find a spot either directly in front of the house or about 4 cars away. Putnam ave is a 1 way street, and nearly all of the streets in bedstuy are wide 1-way streets that alternate in their orientation. Putnam Ave on the 500 block is a pretty sure thing.

*What are some close-by things to do?*
Great coffee at Anchor (On Throop Avenue @ Jefferson, 1.5 blocks away)
Cheaper, but still good cup of coffee at Rabbit Moon (On Marcus Garvey @Putnam, 1 block away)
One of the best egg sandwiches around at Brunswick (On Marcus Garvey @Decatur, 6 blocks away)
Fantastic panini, pizza, and Italian wines at Saraghina (On Lewis Ave @ Halsey, 4 blocks away)
Awesome burgers and southern comfort food at Hot House Peaches (On Tompkins Avenue @ Hancock, 2.5 blocks away)
Great new gastro pub at Eugene (On Tompkins Avenue @ Jefferson, 2 blocks away)
Great selection of wines & beers at Brew (On Putnam Avenue @ Tompkins, 2 blocks away)
Walk over to the closest Citibike terminal, rent a bike, and just wander around (On Nostrand Ave @ Macon, about a 12 minute walk)
Hop on the C train at Throop Ave, and head to Fort Greene, Dumbo, or Manhattan (5 minute walk down Throop Ave)

Last week of May was indeed unreasonably cold and rainy. Thanks Benjamin and Noreen for keeping us worm at night, every night. I can't think of any other landlord in New York being so generous and kind for his tenant/guests. Apartment gives one complete privacy. Everything is spic and span clean, spacious, with all one may need in the kitchen, large bathtub and comfy bed. Virtually everything is newly renovated to the highest standards with amazing woodwork and finishes. Located 10 min slow walk from the subway line. Pretty safe, even late at night. Truly great value considering space, location, standard and cleanness. Thanks again. Ludvig and Ann. Toronto. Canada

We stayed at Ben's place while in NYC for work, and it was a great place to do some writing. We had wonderful meals in the neighborhood at Peaches Hothouse, Saraghina, and LunAtico, all of which we would highly recommend! Ben let us work in his back yard on a perfect-weather day, which we really appreciated. I hope to return with my husband and kids someday to see more of Brooklyn!

I'm a 44 year old work-from-home software guy. I grew up in Asia, North America, and Europe because of my dad's job in the military, and am myself a military veteran (12 Bravo). In my free time, I work on my house and hang out with my very busy wife and twin daughters. I'm an avid jiu jitsu practitioner, rope climber, home chef, and homework ninja who has lived in New York City since 2003, but also consider San Francisco and Chicago to be second home towns. Some of my favorite restaurants include The Spotted Pig, Gramercy Tavern, Slanted Door, Delfina, Publican, and Avec. My all time favorite vacation spot is a little town in the Costa Brava called Cadaqués.
