This 130 year old cottage, lovingly restored and full of character, retains its original stone finish - inside and out. Set on an acre of landscaped garden, it was the former home of Michael Brennan, a local blacksmith.
The ground floor, finished with Mexican Terracotta, covers approximately 35 square meters with underfloor heating. Two mezzanine floors have been added and floored with beautifully-grained Honduran pitch pine. The high ceilings and roof beams remain exposed.
The lounge area centres around a multi-fuel stove. Within the original stone wall, there are many interesting details to be found. Above the fireplace, there is an old-style drying rack operated by a manual pulley system. This is anchored with a 'calf-hook', a feature in old farmhouses used for tethering young animals during long winter nights.
The mezzanine loft twin room overlooks the lounge area and is accessed by a spiral staircase. The two double bedrooms are located behind the chimney breast, the upper being accessed by an open stone stairway.
The bathroom comprises a shower, with exposed copper plumbing fixtures, toilet and handbasin. Solar panels provide ample hot water all year round.
The landscaped gardens are very secluded and south-facing. There is off-road, gated carparking for 3 vehicles.

Mary, our neighbour, will welcome you upon arrival. She will show you around the cottage, is a mine of local information and will be your point of contact during your stay.
Guests should be aware that, in keeping with the secluded nature of this cottage, and, indeed, the region, there is patchy cell-phone coverage and no internet connection. Wi-Fi is available in Keating's Bar in Kilbaha.
There is no microwave in the property.
Guests are welcome to light the solid fuel stove during their stay. We will provide a starter pack of firelighters and briquettes for the first evening. Beyond that, you will need to supply your own - there's a list of local suppliers in the house manual in the cottage.
While our family have holidayed here with toddlers and young children for many years, we would ask parents to note that there are two mezzazine floors, one accessed by a spiral staircase and the other by open stone steps. Given the nature of the stone work, there are sharp corners throughout the cottage.
As our heating and water system is a modern addition, you will notice exposed copper plumbing throughout the cottage. Due to the age (and with the aim of preserving the character) of the structure, it has not always been possible to insulate the sound of this system, particularly the water pump, as much as we would like. As a result, things occasionally do go ‘bump in the night’!
The property is gated.
We allow well-behaved pets to visit, however, there is an additional charge of €30 to cover additional cleaning. The house is enclosed with a low wall (a meter high) around the perimeter, a gate to the front (the road) and one at the back that leads to the garden. So, provided your pet isn't an escape artist and doesn't jump walls, you shouldn't spend your weekend tracking them around Loop Head! The garden is only bordered by a posted fence and hedge, so not as secure for pets - we usually advise they be supervised if they're in the garden.
We expect guests to treat this cottage with the same respect that we afford it and to leave it as they find it.
We do not allow smoking in the cottage.
We provide all bed linen. We supply 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel per person, 2 additional hand towels and 2 rolls of toilet paper per stay.
We allow well-behaved pets to visit, however, there is an additional charge of €30 to cover the cleaning associated with pet dander. Please inform us at the time of your booking and your reservation will be amended accordingly
While our family have holidayed here with toddlers and young children for many years, and we welcome families of all ages, we ask parents to consider and be mindful of the features of the cottage; they may not suit every family. We ask parents to note that there are two mezzazine floors, one accessed by a spiral staircase and the other by open stone steps. There is an open hearth. Given the nature of the stone work, there are sharp corners throughout the cottage.
The property is gated and fenced but outdoor parental supervision is always advised. There is a covered fresh-water well which you are requested to be aware of and not to interfere with.
Although I'm from lovely rainy Ireland, I take every opportunity to explore other parts of the globe! Armed with my camera, I enjoy the path less travelled and living as a local. I try never to visit the same place twice but, every so often, Portugal, Croatia or Malta will draw me back!
When I'm not enjoying sunnier climates, which is never as often as I would like, I'm an Ob/Gyn in one of Ireland's biggest maternity hospitals. I fill my evenings with cinema, rock-climbing and being a bit of a foodie... although a very unenthusiastic cook! Agnes Obel, Sarah Neufeld, Foals and Marc O'Reilly have got the most airtime on my iTunes in the last month.
