Food Scene

The Glass house at Gee's Restaurant is an Oxford classic, and serves some of the best food and wine around in a relaxed setting. It is easily my favourite Oxford restaurant, and somewhere my partner and I reserve going to for special occasions.

The Magdalen arms is about 30 minutes walk away down the Iffley Road, and along with the Chester Arms just around the corner, is one of the two best gastro-pubs in Oxford. They serve a great range of beers (including Monteiths, a New Zealand favourite of mine), and a fabulous selection of hearty English food ranging from large sharing Roasts, to much more delicate fish dishes. There is something here to suit everyone from the most ardent carnivore to healthy living vegetarians. In the summer, the beer garden and outside restaurant are a lovely addition.

A beautiful spot on the Folly bridge, with views across the river and into central Oxford. Serving modern, British food, you can eat out on the Terrace if you wish, or even hire a boat to potter along the river.

Raymond Blanc's famous two Michelin star restaurant, I've only ever been lucky enough to go here twice, but the food, wine and atmosphere are absolutely outstanding. It more than meets the hype. However, it is eye-wateringly expensive! One to reserve for a truly special occasion.

Drinks & Nightlife

A great pub on the West side of the river, which is only accessible by foot. In the summer it is an amazing place to sit outside on the banks of the Thames watching the rowers, runners and boats go by.

The Kings Arms is only 10-15 minutes walk from the apartment and is a great place to go for a drink in the summer looking out over Sandford Lock. It also acts as a great place to start a walk along the river to Abingdon or into the centre of Oxford.

Another Oxford classic, situated just off Port Meadow, and a short walk from the sailing club, the Perch acts as a great stop for those who want to follow the river all the way from the apartment up to North Oxford and then join other routes to follow on to Blenheim Palace. They have a great beer garden and serve a fabulous Tuna burger.

Everything Else

A great place for both kids and adults. Theres a selection of animals to feed, mini diggers, and child friendly go-karts. For the adults there is an excellent farm shop, pick-your-own and a cafe.

Hungerford is my favourite place to start long bike rides into the surrounding North Wessex Downs. The countryside is beautiful, and the roads are practically deserted, making it both a fun, and safe place to go for a ride.

Arts & Culture

Punting is an Oxford classic, and something that everyone should try. It is a great way to spend a day, pottering along the river, stopping into one of the many Oxford parks you drift past for a picnic and champagne, or tying up at a pub for a couple of beers in the sun.

Sightseeing

Winston Churchill's family home is another must-see in Oxford. The grounds are free to get in to, and are a great place to go for a peaceful walk in beautiful surroundings. If you want a more cultured experience, you can walk or take a tour around the house itself, or go to the Orangerie restaurant for dinner.
