Parks & Nature
Easy hiking or biking trail along the Big Deschutes River: access the Benham Falls where the Newberry Lava Flow once blocked the river.
Our favorite trail access point (30-40 minute walk to the falls): From the Sunriver Country Store, take Beaver Dr north and continue onto E. Cascade Dr through Circles 11, 10, and 9 to a right turn onto the Deschutes River access road leading a half mile to the kayak take-out point. Park and follow the trail down stream to the footbridge. Enjoy views of Mt Bachelor along this stretch of the trail. Continue another ten minutes to the falls. Past the Benham Falls the trail continues north providing views of Broken Top and the South Sister mountains.

Benham Falls Overlook

Along this short drive, you will also note an access road left to La Pine State Park. Take this road half a mile to the bridge where short trails lead downstream to the Fall River Falls. Other longer trails lead through the park to the Deschutes River.
Staying on S. Century Dr westward, observe the numerous parking areas that access a gentle trail upstream to the Fall River Campground footbridge. The Fall River is fly fishing only. The hatchery itself offers a peaceful experience for your family.

Fall River Hatchery
15055 S Century DrDriving west from Snow Goose Ave on South Century Dr, cross the bridge over the Big Deschutes River and continue a few miles along the pristine water of Fall River to the hatchery on the left. Along this short drive, you will also note an access road left to La Pine State Park. Take this road half a mile to the bridge where short trails lead downstream to the Fall River Falls. Other longer trails lead through the park to the Deschutes River.

The trailhead is opposite the Paulina Lake Campground and near the visitor center. This trail is gentle at first, but becomes a good workout as you climb through wooded areas and spectacular viewpoints of Paulina and East Lakes inside the caldera. From the peak, enjoy views as far as the sky permits. From the house, take Hwy 97 south toward La Pine. Turn left onto the Newberry Caldera/Paulina Lake/East Lake access road. Just west of Paulina Lake, stop at the Paulina Falls viewpoint. A trail leads down to the water.

Fall Creek TrailFrom a parking area north of Sparks Lake, hike a short distance to Fall Creek and continue along a gentle trail upstream passing pristine cascading falls all along the way. After some walking, the trail splits west to Moraine Lake at the bottom of South Sister mountain. Staying right at the split continues to Green Lakes. We highly recommend the initial part of this hike along Fall Creek. It is hard to imagine a more beautiful gentle hike. Take care to be prepared for changing weather conditions.
